A consistent morning routine of doing her lessons after breakfast has made such a difference. It only took a couple of weeks for her school teacher to comment on the change in Amelie. 02.01.2022 Amazing Science: Rats are the worlds best land-mine hunters! Rats and mice are smart learners, when it comes to earning a tasty meal. Apopo is a Tanzania-based organisation which uses African giant-pouched rats to find landmines. Thousands of miles of farmland have been cleared (and countless lives saved) in war-zones such as Cambodia and Mozambique, thanks to the rats and their trainers. These rats have a superb sense of smell and can be trained to sniff out TNT under a l...ayer of earth. The rats start learning very young and are fully trained by the time they are a year old. They are bribed with food: they know that if they find their target and hear a click; they will get a treat. Find a land-mine, hear a click and collect a banana! Scratch out the spot and go on to the next one. So a job which takes days with humans alone, can be done in minutes. Well worth a banana! See more
