25.01.2022 Duty of care cannot be under-estimated and employers and their managers need to remain sensitive to, and aware of, all risks within the the workplace - not just the mechanical and environmental ones.

24.01.2022 Looking for ways to respond to COVID-19 in your business or workplace, take a look at this guidance from Squire Patton Boggs. It contains some great pointers on quarantining, stand-down and forced leave. https://www.squirepattonboggs.com//ke/coronavirus-covid19

24.01.2022 It still amazes me what a government can do when it has the will. Sadly so few possess the capacity for more than "do good" rhetoric, with the monologue of fairness or unfairness, the will of the people, that hands are tied (aka some wealth constituents wont back it) or the spirit of capitalism. Its all horse shit and Iceland can prove it. By the way - the only bank in Iceland that didnt "go under" in the GFC was run by women. Not by the bullish, self interested, ego driven, greed mongers you typically find leading banks across the world. The success of the women was something to do with their ability to more accurately assess risk.

23.01.2022 When China catches a cold, the rest of the world is bed-ridden Who would have seen it coming, a virus in China and the worlds economies start grinding to a halt. Commerce becomes almost impossible and whole sectors of business come under pressure. Anyone in the tourism sector will be feeling the pinch now. Those who rely on simple paper masks to run their sterile business no longer have supply. Logistics stop and products cannot be shipped to clients. Meanwhile manufacturing... grinds to a halt and world supply is stopped. At the epicenter of it all - China. Not because they have necessarily done anything spurious or insincere, just that they have successfully enticed us from self reliance to an economic dependence. Through their ability to make, sell and deliver at prices below our own, many of the worlds economies are choking. Paralyzed by the broken supply chain. So many businesses are hooked on the supply from China that they cannot see how their addiction is putting them at risk. How China-proof is your business? How self reliant and self sufficient is it? Do you have alternatives available to you, either by design or chance? How is your business set up to flex and change course in times of external crisis?

23.01.2022 Its always been a corporate secret for which confidentiality clauses were routinely applied, but millennials are less worried about the consequences of letting the world know what they get paid. And why not? If there is to be trust and cooperation, they just may be on to something - afterall if the reward is not going to be distributed equitably, whats the motivation to cooperate?

22.01.2022 Flexible workplaces need to maintain a flexible mindset - just like work-life balance, what it means to have balance differs between people, so too does the notion of flexibility. To prescribe flexibility is as fraught as prescribing what balance looks like.

22.01.2022 Again, procedural fairness is the key. But in this case there are a couple of twists - culture and an adverse impact of the behaviour.

19.01.2022 Delighted to have been one of the judges for these awards and very much looking forward to seeing the finalists take the stage and claim their reward for the personal and corporate inclusion effort being made for and by the LGBTI+ community and their allies in Hong Kong.

18.01.2022 Collaboration at its best is an ecosystem all the healthier for its co-existing complexities. Operating throughout these interactions requires one to be nimble of mind and action - sometimes you are the novice, other times the expert. Knowing how to flex and fill the role you play - recognising it in ever changing contexts is the skill of today.

18.01.2022 If we place respect at the heart of the workplace, the line is much clearer. Any act that diminishes another is disrespect, and that do so for self gratification (even if unconscious in the perpetrator) is bullying.

18.01.2022 There’s an undeniable volume of discussion around and responding to the many present challenges of COVID-19: leading through challenging or crisis times; how to conduct layoffs or furlough employees; ways to access the myriad forms of economic or financial support from governments; practices and tools for flexible working; ways to balance work with home-schooling; and reporting regime waivers; all intended to make the COVID-19 landscape easier to navigate. 17.01.2022 Managing through the COVID-19 pandemic will be a challenge for every business. If not right now, in weeks or months to come, at least until a vaccine is found to combat this highly contagious illness. So businesses must continue to prepare for the supply chain and, more importantly, workforce risk - not just that caused by disruption in China, but for the event when the virus lands here on their door step. Managing through this time will demand a good knowledge of policies an...d practices, along with the legal context for dealing with staff, but many employers (especially SMEs) probably havent thought too much about their responsibilities and role in managing a contagion or organising staff and work processes to protect colleagues and customers - at least not on the scale we are being told to prepare for. Flexibility has been the buzz in China and Hong Kong, where staff have all been sent home to work remotely. Meanwhile schools and universities have closed and children are housebound. With a multitude of challenges, economic and social, taking place around them, the average staff member is experiencing significant physical and psychological stress. Concerns about space, freedom of movement, employment security, workplace productivity & trust, social engagement, child care and education, abound. Compounding this, working from home in inadequate space or privacy, without quality skills and training to work remotely, all place a significant over burden on staff. Business needs to prepare staff for coming health crises and related responses - not just worrying about the person who may fall ill, but also considering how to keep the business running.Give staff the tools and skills and practice using them now, before they are needed. Consider workloads and competing priorities when schools are closed. Ensure there is understanding for mental well-being and access to support. 15.01.2022 Hiring good staff in this era is more of a challenge but can supported by better tools - but you need to understand the role and application of new tools and use them well. However, the same goes for the traditional tools. Fail to follow process, stay objective, apply meaningful criteria, seek to validate and verify, and no amount of AI is going to save you.

14.01.2022 Dont be scared to claim the deductions you deserve, but do make sure that its justified work and has a direct reference to you earning your assessable income. Otherwise the ATO may come knocking.

11.01.2022 Not only people are susceptible to the Coronavirus! Interestingly, it’s the small things that seem to be at the front edge of the ripple effect as over-reaction to the Coronavirus retains its grip on the world and business. Today I spoke with a small business operator in Perth. They make pharmaceuticals a small shop front compounding business. In the next week or so they will be out of face masks no more supplies can be bought and manufacturers have no idea when they will... be forthcoming. In fact, the manufacturers are in China and likely to be disrupted for some time by restrictions on the movement of people and goods (within and outside of China). So this small business looks set to struggle very soon exaggerated by the fact that hospitals will get preference for resupplying stocks of masks too. I'm not sure how other businesses in the region and beyond are fairing but I would encourage every small business to be thinking about crisis management. Not sure where to start, we can help. Got tips to share, please add a post.

10.01.2022 Businesses are eco-systems, talent-based organisms. All too often we think leadership or product or customer define the organisation, but they are merely parts of the greater being. By seeing the need of businesses as being effective talent eco-systems, we can find ways to create the conditions for realising the desired growth. When we describe leaders or leadership, it cannot be without understanding that they must embody the D&I we are seeking.... https://kinetichr.wordpress.com//talent-eco-systems-deliv/

09.01.2022 ATO keeping a close eye on overstated home-office expenses. Be sure to pro-rata your expenses and have itemised accounts.

09.01.2022 The discomfort in the proposition lies in the assumption that creating the right portal or platform will deliver the right talent. Systems that seek to attract diverse talent are like flames to months - they draw you in, only for you to get burned. A focus on bringing good people into broken businesses is not a good use of technology. While the technology may be an effective enabler, the true challenge for business is to fix their internal systems and capacities, otherwise diverse talent is nothing more than an organ transplant without medication - simply waiting to be rejected by the host.... https://kinetichr.wordpress.com//can-technology-deliver-a/

08.01.2022 Great Mastermind lunch in West Perth today at SBN Perth City Business Mastermind Lunch ... some great strategies.... watch this space!!!

08.01.2022 Inclusion or exclusion can come down to simple perception about some of the most minor details in life. It really often is a matter of being "in the eye of the beholder", but there are some simple things we can do to eliminate or mitigate the chances of someone feeling excluded.

06.01.2022 While governments across the world scramble to contain the spread of COVID-19, the impact on business grows exponentially and unchecked. With potential to be a far greater economic than health disruptor, the pandemic is consuming all available resources, leaving business (notably SMEs) to fend for themselves. Highlighting the ill-preparedness of most SMEs the COV-19 outbreak looks set to be a tipping point for many. With supply chains blocked and consumers in hibernation (l...iterally and economically) businesses are likely to rise or fail in the coming weeks and months. COVID-19, claiming those with weak immune systems and leaving the strong. It will soon claim those businesses with weak self sufficiency systems, leaving the adaptable, nimble and agile to thrive. Already business casualties are mounting - albeit not with the same media coverage. Hong Kong Airways is likely to disappear very soon - already an ill-business the virus will likely be its demise. Shipping, hotels and air travel are discounted to the max. Even Apple is struggling due to reliance on Chinese supply chain. Meanwhile Zoom (the online collaboration tool), bio & pharma, home delivery are all booming as a result. The Chinese ripple effect will be felt for a long time after the panic of the virus. Whats most important for business, is rediscovering how to de-risk their supply chain, to keep their quality staff, to reach consumers through different means and, most importantly, stay relevant - through doing the same but differently, or simply finding something new to do. This will be an inflection point. The businesses that will thrive in these times will master agility and innovation, apply technology where they once avoided it, seek to engage staff more flexibly and dynamically. 06.01.2022 A lack of privacy in the open workplace is driving staff to use email in lieu of face-to-face conversation. Not surprisingly, they are consequently failing to realise the gains in collaboration and innovation that open work-spaces were alleged to deliver.

06.01.2022 July 1 was a big day for employers - changes to minimum rates, penalty rates, payroll reporting and superannuation. Are you on top of whats changed - are you starting the new finacnial year in compliance?

06.01.2022 Scary Stuff - It's amazing what comes out of people's mouths when they are too stupid to think seriously about a topic. A list of 10 reasons why women should be on boards naturally follows in rebuttal to all of these.

06.01.2022 Delighted to be back in Hong Kong this week. Here to judge three categories of the Community Business DIAN Decade Awards. Its great to be hearing of the journeys companies have been on, the progress being made and the innovations & learning along the way. The conversation has certainly matured over the decade. #IMPACTxAsia. Its hard to believe that I was part of DIAN when it formed a decade ago, such a privilege. A great network of companies and practitioners making a difference in Asia and #Diversity and #Inclusion.

05.01.2022 Interesting to see so many of the surveyed companies claiming innovation is a priority in 2018. I wonder how many companies are truly capable and understanding of what innovation is and how their cultures and approaches to talent must change in order to realise this aspiration. A failure to even understand talent as an eco-system providing the life blood to an organisation, cognisant of the inter-relation between its many drivers and moving parts - remains a foundational challenge for many business leaders.

05.01.2022 This case highlights the need to not rush to assumptions in cases where serious allegations of dishonesty are involved. It pays to take the time to ensure your allegations are carefully investigated. Riddled with errors and poor judgement, this case leaves the employer $30k poorer.

05.01.2022 COVID-19: Panic is unnecessary but preparedness is the key While the Small Business Council of Australia look to lobbying the Government for relief to Australias one-million small businesses, it would be prudent for every business owner to be considering the contingency plans. Employers are encouraged to consider, not just the supply chain impacts but the people challenges that may lie ahead. For example, Is your business ready if staff fall ill - whats the quarantine plan?... What if staff movement is curbed to prevent spreading the virus - how will you produce or meet client needs? What work from home arrangements do you have - if remote working is needed can staff be effective? How will you communicate between staff if they are outside the normal workplace? Are your IT systems able to support effective remote working? While positives exist in this pandemic for many businesses, the ones that will truly suffer are those that fail to prepare and anticipate the potential crisis ahead. Survival is in the ability to adapt or weather the storm - those that cannot will be acquisition or insolvency targets in the coming months. https://www.smartcompany.com.au//coronavirus-update-for-/

05.01.2022 Last week I had the pleasure of sharing my take on D&I with the Hong Kong Division of Organisational Psychologists

03.01.2022 At last an HR practitioner and Company that recognise the myth of fit and the necessity of understanding the business need as a driver to talent selection. But equally important, they recognise the need to create a place of value and participation for new talent, so that they are included and can contribute. So text book but so often dismissed.

03.01.2022 Adapting to new ways Today was my first foray into online content delivery and facilitation, in response to travel and interaction restrictions arising from the #Coronavirus. Big thanks to the Business School at City University of Hong Kong. Instead of canceling this weeks student engagements, today we launched a five session series on #MNC_recruitment using #Zoom.... Thanks to the virus I am finding news ways of working and engaging, redeveloping content and still achieving my goals. If your business is struggling to find new ways in challenging time, let me know. If youve found success in adapting, lets hear about it.

01.01.2022 Atlassian have three interesting questions to be used in performance reviews. While the questions put a clear onus on the shoulders of the employee to understand their personal contribution, one aspect I see missing is the responsibility of the manager. Such questions might reinforce the frequency, quality and value of the feedback received. https://www.smartcompany.com.au//three-questions-atlassi/
