24.01.2022 It may appear that we've been idyll here at King Billy but behind the scenes, we've been working on a massive project, transforming an old piggery into an art studio called 'Wilburs!' So far, three years in the making, Wilburs has been a labour of love as we do our best to rebuild with reclaimed materials on a limited budget. We're not finished yet, (this may take another three years) but we've had so much joy in its creation that we thought we should start to share some of it. We also wanted to thank the friends who have helped us along the way. Our plans are to someday hold art workshops in the space that has been designed for timber and metal-work, ceramics and sculpture and perhaps even a little hanging out with some live music. Stay tuned for updates (but please don't hold your breath!)

24.01.2022 Spring is upon us at long last and the wildflowers are responding in all their glory to the warm days in the forest on our doorstep at King Billy Retreat. Who needs a cottage garden when nature does the plant selection, design and maintenance for free!

18.01.2022 The Splinter Art Group thoroughly enjoyed their 'creative' day in the garden. Building, dying, drawing, writing and of course, eating.

16.01.2022 Winter at King Billy Retreat 50 shades of green

16.01.2022 Had to take some photos of the garden; inspired by the recent rain! The ability of native plants to recover after a long hot summer and respond to a light sprinkling of rain always astounds me. Makes me want to get out and spend some time pottering around with my bits of rubbish.

14.01.2022 Les and I would like to offer our guesthouse 'King Billy Retreat' in Rushworth, country Victoria for anyone evacuating from fires. The house is only small - it has one queen-sized bed but mattresses can be made up on the living room floor if needed for kids. We can provide linen and towels. As it is a guesthouse, we will need to juggle with prior bookings but it is definitely available this week (5-10th Jan) and ongoing arrangements can be made. Please PM us to organise.... Take care and feel free to share this message.

10.01.2022 Another great reason to visit Rushworth this Spring

09.01.2022 It is pure joy to watch the rain colouring the landscape. The lichen and mosses are so responsive; changing colour within minutes of the first shower. The frogs sing in harmony and the termite monarchs take to the skies like some fantastic David Attenborough documentary. This is surely paradise.

08.01.2022 Very excited to find this gorgeous little creature on our property yesterday. A Common Dunnart - not so common though. Another perfect reason to protect and enhance the habitat quality of our landscape.

07.01.2022 Another great event coming up in Rushworth!

05.01.2022 We hereby declare King Billy Retreat barbed wire free! Over 4 kms of viscous barbed wire has been sent to the metal recyclers. Gliders, bats and kangaroos can now move freely through the landscape without injury and it feels as though a large, festering splinter has been removed.

03.01.2022 King Billy Retreat in all weather. Hot, wet, indoors or out - the gardens and guesthouse are maturing beautifully and settling into their box-ironbark landscape. Taking bookings for autumn now. Easter weekend still available. Come and check out the Rushworth Easter Heritage street parade and market or just enjoy the peace and quiet of the bush.

03.01.2022 Luckily, not all of Victoria's forested areas have been affected by this Summer's bushfires (touch-wood) King Billy Retreat has although, been dry for so long that we almost forgot what it was like to watch a torrential downpour but yesterday the rain came and came and came. Realigned our positive and negative ions, washed away the dust, filled the wetland, swelled the lichen, made rivers of our roads and entertained our little boy for at least thirty minutes. The miraculous beauty of the Australian bush must be entirely its response to rain and the deep transformation that takes place before your eyes. The bush and its inhabitants have breathed a sigh of relief. This makes us truly grateful to live in paradise.

01.01.2022 Some of the things you will see if you go for a walk with Trust for Nature this Saturday at the King Billy Retreat open garden party
