25.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK HISTORY 1991 Present With a growing awareness of the distinct cultural histories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, NADOC was expanded to recognise Torres Strait Islander people and culture. The committee then became known as the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC). This new name has become the title for the whole week, not just the day. Each year, a theme is chosen to reflect the important issues and events for NAI...DOC Week. During the mid-1990s, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) took over the management of NAIDOC until ATSIC was disbanded on 15 April 2004. Over the period from 2004 to 2005 there were interim arrangements, with former Senator Aden Ridgeway chairing the Committee until 2008. Anne Martin and Ben Mitchell served as co-chairs of the National NAIDOC Committee from 2008 to 2018, when Patricia Thompson and John Paul Janke were elected the Co-Chairs. The National NAIDOC Committee has made key decisions on national celebrations each year and has representatives from most Australian states and territories. #NAIDOC2020

21.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK HISTORY 1956 1990 Major Aboriginal organisations, state and federal governments, and a number of church groups all supported the formation of, the National Aborigines Day Observance Committee (NADOC). At the same time, the second Sunday in July became a day of remembrance for Aboriginal people and their heritage. #NAIDOCWeek In 1972, the Department of Aboriginal Affairs was formed, as a major outcome of the 1967 referendum.... In 1974, the NADOC committee was composed entirely of Aboriginal members for the first time. The following year, it was decided that the event should cover a week, from the first to second Sunday in July. In 1984, NADOC asked that National Aborigines Day be made a national public holiday, to help celebrate and recognise the rich cultural history that makes Australia unique. While this has not happened, other groups have echoed the call. #NAIDOCweek

12.01.2022 What is GLAAD doing this year for Trans Awareness Week? This year for Transgender Awareness Week, GLAAD is encouraging everyone to watch the documentary DISCLOSURE on Netflix. The feature from director Sam Feder and executive producer Laverne Cox explores the history of trans representation in TV and film in unprecedented form, revealing how Hollywood simultaneously reflects and manufactures people's deepest anxieties about gender. Given that 80% Americans believe they have n...ever personally met someone who is transgender, that means the majority of the public's education and awareness about this community has been informed by more than a century's worth of media which has overwhelmingly misrepresented and mischaracterized who trans people are--significantly influencing public perceptions, policy, and attitudes about the trans community. Nick Adams, the Director of Transgender Representation at GLAAD and a consulting producer on DISCLOSURE, who is also featured in the film adds: "Often this is true of trans people as well. We don't know a trans person when we're trying to figure out who we are. So we're looking to the media." Through personal interviews with 30 transgender thought leaders on screen and a production model that prioritized hiring trans people into crewed positions--offering fellowship opportunities when that wasn't possible, DISCLOSURE invites viewers to see the dynamic interplay between trans representation on screen, the resulting cultural attitudes off-screen, and real-world consequences of these depictions on trans people's lives as told revolutionarily from trans people's own experiences and perspectives. It's been said that once people see the media stereotypes, tropes, and clichéd portrayals stacked together in DISCLOSURE, it's impossible to unsee them. For trans people and allies, DISCLOSURE is an important survey of how media has treated trans people, influencing not only how trans people have come to view themselves but also how the world has, with a call-to-action to better understand and support the community--on screen and off. GLAAD has added watching DISCLOSURE to its Tips for Allies of Transgender People guide. Find them all here. From "Disclosure" to "POSE": What movies, shows to watch during Transgender Awareness Week, GLAAD recommends these pieces of entertainment media to watch during and after Trans Awareness Week in USA Today. #glaad #transgenderawareness

10.01.2022 LEST WE FORGET... and as the sun goes down, we will remember them.

10.01.2022 What is Transgender Awareness Week? Transgender Awareness Week is a week when transgender people and their allies take action to bring attention to the community by educating the public about who transgender people are, sharing stories and experiences, and advancing advocacy around the issues of prejudice, discrimination, and violence that affect the transgender community. What is Transgender Day of Remembrance? Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) was founded by transgender... advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith as a vigil to honor her memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence that year and began an important memorial that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. Participate in TDOR by attending or organizing a vigil on November 20 to honor all those whose lives were lost to anti-transgender violence that year. Vigils are typically hosted by local transgender advocates or LGBTQ organizations, and held at community centers, parks, places of worship and other venues. The vigil often involves reading a list of the names of those who died that year. #transgenderawareness

01.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK HISTORY 1938 On Australia Day, 1938, protestors marched through the streets of Sydney, followed by a congress attended by over a thousand people. One of the first major civil rights gatherings in the world, it was known as the Day of Mourning. Following the congress, a deputation led by William Cooper presented Prime Minister Joseph Lyons with a proposed national policy for Aboriginal people. This was again rejected because the Government did not hold constitution...al powers in relation to Aboriginal people. After the Day of Mourning, there was a growing feeling that it should be a regular event. In 1939 William Cooper wrote to the National Missionary Council of Australia to seek their assistance in supporting and promoting an annual event. More information about the Day of Mourning can be found at the AIATSIS website. 1940 1955 From 1940 until 1955, the Day of Mourning was held annually on the Sunday before Australia Day and was known as Aborigines Day. In 1955 Aborigines Day was shifted to the first Sunday in July after it was decided the day should become not simply a protest day but also a celebration of Aboriginal culture.
