In 1995, UNESCO decided to celebrate April 23 as World Book and Copyright Day, and since then, the date has prominence in the history of literature. Why April 23? April 23 is a symbolic date for world literature because on this day in 1616 Cervantes, Shakespeare, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died. The day also marks the death and birth anniversary of many other prominent authors, such as Maurice Druon, Haldor K.Laxness, Vladimir Nabokov, Josep Pla, and Manuel Mejía Vallejo. At 5 a.m. that morning, Germany, bereft of manpower and supplies and faced with imminent invasion, signed an armistice (truce) agreement with the Allies in a railroad car outside Compiégne, France. The First World War left nine million soldiers dead and 21 million wounded, with Germany, Russia, Austria-Hungary, France and Great Britain each losing nearly a million or more lives. In addition, at least five million civilians died from disease, starvation, or exposure. It was a significant world event and not a joyful one. Let's talk about it. World War I (or the First World War) was a global war originating in Europe. It lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918.
