17.01.2022 COOLANGATTA c1912 - You can see the railway line on the right hand side of the image. This is really 'beyond the black stump' (in the foreground on the left). ...Billy Stafford has observed that Griffith Street is not very busy and also that the tea tree swamp on the right became Goodwin Park. The photographer was Alfred Wappett. Thanks to Sherrie Ford for alerting me to this great photo from Tweed Regional Museum's collection. See more

05.01.2022 LIVE MUSIC APPROVED FOR KIRRA BEACH HOTEL BEER GARDEN What do you think? Despite 29 objections due to noise concerns, Gold Coast City Council has approved amp...lified music in the beer garden from 10am to 9pm Friday to Saturday and 10am to 8pm Sunday to Thursday. The Council has ordered a Complaints Register be kept by the hotel detailing any concerns about the beer garden. The sound allowed is to a maximum of 77dBC L10. The music will be played from the Bali hut with speakers facing towards the beach side and a 1.8metre acoustic fence will be built between the beer garden and the carpark. There's also an increase in patronage - up from 100 people currently to 135 people now allowed in the beer garden. Will you go there?

01.01.2022 Some extracts from Kirra's 100 Year History book - available from the GCCC library - copies can also be purchased from the club. 1918 During Kirra's second seas...on, the Coolangatta Progress Association was renamed Coolangatta Rate-payers’ Association. The association was an active lobby group for Coolangatta to become a separate municipality and was strongly supported by Nerang Councillor and owner of the Greenmount Guesthouse, Patrick Fagan. The year also saw sanitation services supplied to Coolangatta, much to the relief of holidaymakers to the town. Still, there were not many amenities in the area and the local Coolangatta Council had few resources as the area was still undergoing rapid change. The post office in Coolangatta, opened in 1918, was at first actually called the Kirra Post Office. The Club’s first Ladies Committee was established in this 1917/1918 season and was chaired by Mrs. Annie Winders, wife of our longest serving Office Bearer Mr S.W. (Bill) Winders who was the mother of J.R. (Jack) Winders. Committee Members were mothers or wives of members. All three ‘Winders’ became Honorary Life Members of Kirra. If ever a name in our history should be immortalised it is ‘Winders’. Always a strong force in the social and fund raising life of early Kirra, the Ladies Committee raised hundreds of pounds for the Club and continued in operation for many years. It was as a result of the efforts of this Committee that the Club later staged its first Annual Ball, on 26th May 1921, netting a profit of 1/6/3d ($2.62 in today’s money) which was not subsidised in those days. On Sunday 17th March 1918, Kirra recorded its first shark attack. Newspaper reports of 23rd March 1918 record: .that whilst bathing at Kirra Beach, Coolangatta (Q.), on Sunday morning last a local resident was attacked by a shark. He was fortunate enough to escape with a lacerated heel, and managed to reach, the shore in safety. On New Year's Eve 1918, the Club held the first of many beach concerts. It was a novel event for the time, with the stage being the front landing of the Ladewig residence ‘Timaru’, which stood opposite the Pavilion Kiosk and had a magnificent view of Kirra Beach and the then clubhouse which was situated on the Point. For quite a number of years parties at the Ladewig residence became very popular with members and supporters. The concert raised 6 towards Club funds. To raise these funds ‘donation boxes’ were placed at various points such as the Coolangatta Rail-way Station and the foyers of Hotels and Boarding Houses.
