It will highlight the tight spots in your spine, the weak spots in your abs and the cheat spots we all try and rely on just to get us off the darn ground! (Yes shoulders,I’m looking at you, those naughty shoulders, always creeping’ up around the ears like earrings!) The goal is to work on the mobility of the spine through your powerhouse connection including hamstring flexibility. 25.01.2022 Right now it's all about how we keep our mind sane and our bodies strong in these challenging times stuck at home, so I've developed some new classes for the virtual world. Remember what it was like to move with freedom and ease? Pre-kids, pre-lockdown, pre-getting old (er)! Are you feeling more stiff than supple, more stooped than strong, more sapped than spring in your step? Sometimes we know we have to do something to change our situation but it can be daunting figuring ou...t where to start. I have a virtual beginners Pilates mat class on Wednesday’s at 5.45pm. In this class we will cover all the foundational principles to get you moving well.So you can feel good again, not just in my class, but in your life. Want some one-to-one attention, then I have virtual privates and duets available, where I can focus solely on you (or you and your partner) and your body's needs. Maybe you have some experience with Pilates (mat or equipment) and just want someone to tell you what to do and how to get moving again. On Tuesday's at 9.15am and Saturday's at 10.45am I have an 'all levels' group virtual class. Wake up without having to suffer through that ongoing back pain. 22.01.2022 Let’s talk about Pilates principles. I’m a rule-follower through and through, so if there’s guidelines or rules, then imma do what they say! It’s in my nature, I don’t really like being a rebel, I tried that once or twice as a teenager, and it gave me anxiety. The fact that Pilates has these over arching principles, just makes me feel calm. I know what I’m working towards, what the end goal is. Sure I deviate in my lane sometimes, I might teach a spine twist here and there a...nd heaven forbid that wasn’t in my original manual, buuuut overall these 6 principles guide me more and more the longer I teach. Each week I’m going to talk about the 6 principles. Starting with: Precision. If you do Pilates, you’ll notice that we don’t do 50 reps of anything. There’s just no need. Do the move right and you won’t do more than 3-6, 10 maybe, tops, and even then, only some exercises. Granted, there might be a period of time where you are learning the exercise in your body, but once you do, squeezing the juice out of the movement will require some precision and body awareness. A lack of precision can manifest as pain in the body, poor muscles patterns can lead to many problems over time. Pilates helps to correct this and reduce painful old habits. What areas of life to you require precision in? Is it a sport? Maybe it’s your job? Maybe you just want to experience less pain and are curious about precision in Pilates. 20.01.2022 Each week I’ve been exploring the Pilates principles, first it was Precision, then Centering. This week it’s Control. Before Pilates was called ‘Pilates’ (after his namesake Joseph Pilates), it was called Contrology. ... Contrology means to be in control of your body, not your body in control of you. The older I get and the more bodies I teach, the more I see the ramifications of lifestyle, bad habits and sedentary behaviour play out in the human body. These things end up ruling our bodies. It becomes harder to move, so we don’t, we then become even stiller and stiffer until we are in the grips of pain. Sometimes, it’s little niggles here and there, sometimes it’s worse and it’s persistent and chronic. We have lost control of our body. Jospeh Pilates saw this back in 1945 when he first published Return To Life Through Contrology. He stated ‘modern comforts have done away with this particular need for fitness’ (referring to the stone age where man mostly lived outdoors and had to be physically fit to survive), ‘allowing us to become sedentary despite our present mode of so-called ‘fast’ living’. He went on to say ‘Contrology begins with mind control over muscle, by reawakening thousands upon thousands of otherwise ordinarily dormant muscles cells, contrology correspondingly reawakens thousands upon thousands dormant brain cells, thus activating new areas and stimulating further the functioning of the mind. Put simply, Pilates is about stretch, strength and control. And it’s the control that is most important because it uses your mind. There is something amazing and liberating when you feel strong in the mind and the body. 18.01.2022 Each week I’ve been exploring the Pilates principles, first it was Precision, then Centering, then Control, then Flow, then Concentration. Lucky last is Breath. I saved this until last because it’s probably the most important one. We are born with the ability to breathe. But as we age, lifestyle and bad habits creep in. I think the art of a full and proper breath is lost. Or forgotten. Or perhaps there’s not as much importance placed on it. Or maybe it’s that we take it for g...ranted because it’s innate and autonomous. Whatever it is, it’s impact is deep. Since having kids and experiencing an upward slope of general stress and anxiety, breath has become a powerful tool to calm and manage my emotions and mental state. Breath and Pilates are like a Ham and Pickle sandwich. A ham sandwich is good but it’s next level with pickles. Do not skip on the pickle people! Breathing within Pilates allows you to work your muscles deeper, it helps get the oxygen around your body further, it helps to literally start the healing process from the inside out, it helps you focus, it encourages a clear mind which has flow on effects for clarity in the rest of your day’s tasks. Breath and Pilates are keeping me sane and stable. I get way more out of my practice these days, because I have way more to gain. When I look after myself, I am looking after my family. So I will always place importance on the power of breath, especially when it comes to doing my Pilates. Don’t forget I’ll be running a special love NYE class this week. Theres something special about being home at that time of year when most people are on holidays. Everyone is more relaxed so theyre in a good mood plus its summer here,so the days are long and the nights are warm. Ahhhh bliss. One thing Ive noticed though, is that good habits tend to fall by the wayside. Gyms and studios are closed so classes are missed an...d the best of intentions are delayed until the New Year. Thats why Ive decided to donate half of all profits from these mat classes to a wonderful charity, The Salvation Army @salvosau who have launched an Emergency and Disaster Appeal. 17.01.2022 Thanks to a solid half year in lockdown, I am now slightly obsessed with feet and how strongly the connection between feet and powerhouse relates to the mat work. My clients will be laughing at this, because I’m sure they can picture my little voice in their head kindly asking them to turn their right foot in a little more, no like properly, turn it in to parallel, ummm look at your foot, is that a straight line? Can you line up the webbing of your 2nd/3rd toe with the mid point of your heel? A little more? Yep, ok, that’s it, don’t change a thing! But seriously. 16.01.2022 New year, new schedule. I’ve taken a big leap recently. I left my studio where my wonderful friend and best boss lady of all boss ladies brought me up in the Pilates world @pilatesforsports. I walked in to her studio as a client almost 11 years ago and never looked back. It’s been my foundation, my safety net, my playground, my learning hub and a sanctuary for me. I’ve met some of the most wonderful clients (and colleagues), that will truly be irreplaceable. But alas, it’s ti...me, it’s time to move on. Kirsti Pilates To You is growing and expanding. It’s daunting as hell. It’s equally exciting. And I’m just so grateful, that I get to teach more people Pilates. That’s all there is to it. 11.01.2022 Last week, I introduced the 6 Pilates Principles, the first being Precision. This week I want to dive deeper into Centering. The first question I ask my new clients is, ‘what do you think Pilates is about?’ The answer will usually be something like, ‘my core’, ‘my abs’ or ‘my centre’. Yes, spot on, you’re right. Partly. In Pilates, your centre is more than just your abs. It’s everything between your collarbones down to and including your pelvis, wrapping around the whole mi...ddle and not to forget about your backside too! Some people call it your powerhouse or Pilates box (although it’s more like a rectangle rather than a box or a square). In my training I would often hear ‘work from your box and work in your box’. We want to learn how to generate the power to work from the middle of the box to the peripherals. If you tried to stand on a box, you wouldn’t stand on the edges. It might flip. You would stand on the most stable and supportive area. The middle. The centre. But ultimately it’s not about learning fancy phrases like ‘powerhouse’, ‘work from your box’ or ‘centering’ , it’s about being comfortable and confident in your own skin that you can handle the good and the bad stuff that the world throws at you on the daily. -When you can work from the centre, you can stand for longer cooking a Christmas dinner for 4 hours. -When you can work from your centre you can pick yourself up out of the gutter when you fall in front of the hot barista at your local cafe (no promises about bruises to ego though). -When you can work from your centre, you can run up down slides, tunnels and climbing frames with the kids. -When you can work from your centre you won’t take 5 days to recover from 18 holes of golf with your mates on a Sunday. -And when you can work from your centre you can walk up stairs without holding on to the bannister. Pilates teaches you this. 10.01.2022 I just love this. It’s really helping me reframe my thinking lately. You can not please everyone. Not everyone will like you.... You are not everyone’s cup of tea. And that’s ok. Something we’ve been talking about in #agency with @lesleylogan from @profitablepilates is that the more we hear ‘NO’, as in the more people tell you, ‘no thanks, you’re not for me’, then the closer we are to finding our YES’s! The closer we are to finding our people, out tribe. You can learn to use those no’s as fuel to keep you going instead of letting it slow you down. Every NO you get puts you one step closer to the YES you’re looking for. You just have to change your perspective. (Yep, I’m trying!)Why not turn hearing NO into a positive? It’s ok if people don’t stick around/don’t like you/would rather something else, those people are making space for the people that will be in your life. You’ve just got find them. They just need to know you exist. So I’m digging deep to find that inner drive to ask out loud or try again and again or put myself out there and get through these failures, no’s and let downs. Then I can get on with the triumphs, victories and yes’s that come after all those no’s I worked so hard to get. Last week @jamesclear sent an email with a quote from Artificial intelligence researcher Eliezer Yudkowsky on pushing yourself: "If you never fail, you’re only trying things that are too easy and playing far below your level.... If you can’t remember any time in the last six months when you failed, you aren’t trying to do difficult enough things." These thoughts, quotes and observations have been so helpful to me lately, maybe they can be for you? 03.01.2022 The humble wall! The ultimate prop in my eyes. So accessible. ... Can handle a lot. Always there when you need it. I use the wall regularly with my clients. It’s amazing what you can feel in your body when standing up against an immovable object. It offers ideal feedback when working on posture and alignment and because there is no give to a wall, there are some pretty gharnly stretches you can get from it. There’s no where to hide on the wall. So, it keeps you honest, which makes it hard. But hard can be good, hard is a challenge and how good is it to knock off a challenge these days?! 03.01.2022 It’s December. How has the year almost gone! In two week it will be Christmas, in three weeks it will be New Years. ... It feels like Pilates studios have only just reopened and now many are planning for Christmas closures and breaks for the Dec/Jan downtime. So this year I’m running a special NYE virtual mat class. So if you want to keep the momentum going over the Chrissy break or if you have been trying to figure out how to get to my live classes, then this is the one! Thursday 31st December at 10.30am AEST. I will be running a live, 1 hour, all-levels Mat class. I’m so pumped that one of the last things I will get to do this year (and man, what a year it has been), is going to be one of my all time favourite things! Pilates! So, come and do it with me. Class is $25. $5 from every ticket will go to the Salvation Army. It’s been a rough year for many Australian families, Covid has crippled families both financially and emotionally. Let’s get behind @salvosau to help them give families the urgent help they desperately need to stop their hurt - like financial assistance. Class will be instructor lead, so all you need to do is show up and follow along. There will be a 7 day replay too.
