24.01.2022 IT SUPPORT HUB As part of our Year 7 and 11 laptop program, teachers and Senior IT students will establish an IT support hub in the Kirwan High Library. The purpose of this hub is to support students to connect their laptop to the school network and ensure each computer is set up in a way that supports learning. ... Our first IT support hub will be this Friday February 5 at first break. Students who have their own laptops for learning and who have not yet connected to the network should bring their laptops to the Library to receive the support they need. This hub will be open to students in the Year 7 and 11 laptop program, as well as all other students who are bringing their own device to school.

23.01.2022 CROSS SCHOOL COLLABORATION AT ITS BEST Kirwan hosted 8 state secondary schools in the Townsville region for a VET Validation Day on Thursday 3 December. This entailed all schools working together to conduct detailed analyses of assessments, VET programs and Staff profiles for each schools’ VET subjects to ensure that they meet national standards. Kirwan SHS delivers and assesses over 28 VET subjects for our senior students. We have Certificate I, II and III programs in Allied... Health, Sports, Fitness, Aquaculture, Information Technology, Automotive, Construction, Engineering, Aviation, Hospitality, Events, Tourism, Early Childhood Education, and many more. The VET Validation Day was a great way to collaborate and network with other schools to ensure the success of each school’s VET certificate courses.

20.01.2022 WEARABLE ART Year 9 Junior Indigenous Art students spent a lesson learning about and designing make up for the model who will don their wearable art project in a few weeks. 16.01.2022 RSPCA CUPCAKE DAY Kirwan High's Interact Club spent their weekend baking cupcakes to sell for a gold coin today, with the $308 raised going towards the RSPCA. The cupcakes were definitely aimed at the kids, but a few teachers couldn't resist getting in line for a tasty treat!

15.01.2022 MATER TRAINEES Congratulations to Tyrona Sonogan, Atlanta Hudson, Sanetta Nona, Lewis Kyle, Isreal Osae and Percy Quakawoot on gaining their Indigenous Traineeship with the Mater Hospital. These students were coached and mentored through our partnership with the Seed Foundation. This ensured their success in attaining the traineeships. All students successfully completed a Certificate II in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health in Year 11 2020. They will co...ntinue to build on this knowledge throughout their traineeship and will complete a Certificate III Heath Assistance this year. Throughout the subject, students will continue to work with a variety of Indigenous Mentors and develop networks within the health industry. 14.01.2022 HOSPITALITY STUDENTS UP-SKILL On Tuesday hospitality students earned their Responsible Service of Alcohol qualification, one critical for work in the hospitality industry. Students learned about the risks associated with alcohol as well as the laws that impact hospitality workers such as bar staff and the patrons they serve. ... This session was one of three, with students also learning hygiene and workplace health and safety practices.

14.01.2022 BEARCAKES In Week 10, students who are involved in a 16 week Entrepreneurial Business Program with the Australian School of Entrepreneurship (ASE), are actively raising much needed seed funds by selling Bearcakes (not pancakes). These funds will be employed as venture capital to kick-start their individual business ventures.... The Bear cakes were a huge hit as students were stationed in the drop-off zone, as well as making an appearance at lunch time. Thank you to the many staff and parents who supported this exciting venture by purchasing some Bearcakes!

You will also need to bring a water bottle, hat and a sun safe change of clothes that can get wet and a towel for the afternoon session. ... We'll be doing a range of outdoor activities and some of them involve the pool/water. 08.01.2022 SPORTS ACADEMY PROFILES Kirwan High Sports Academy Students Oscar Ditchmen and Jared Craven-Griffiths are Year 12 students with serious ambitions in their chosen sports. Oscar is a fish out of water, having represented Kirwan High in swimming, he wants to go on to represent the Australian Dolphins Swim Team. If he isn’t in the water, he wants to be on it. A talented designer, Oscar is pursuing a career in boat building and design. For his pursuits on and in the water he hang...s onto the best advice he’s ever been given: don’t give up, the harder you train the more you’ll win. Jared is, to put it lightly, a soccer fan. He’s represented NQ United, NQ Schoolboys and the Men’s Premier League. He’s also displayed his multitude of skills for Kirwan High, representing his school in sccer futsal, volleyball, netball and cross country. The school Vice-Captain wants to go to the highest possible level with his soccer career. He may not play soccer, but Sydney Roosters player Mitchell Aubusson is Jared’s biggest inspiration, having realised his own dream of playing sport at the highest level.

They'll be recording their performance next week for it to play at their formal, and on Thursday they had their first practice in the EC. ... The Year 12 song is a tradition stretching back so far some of the teachers currently at Kirwan High sang the song when they graduated.

06.01.2022 ALWAYS WAS, ALWAYS WILL BE. Today we acknowledged and celebrated this year’s NAIDOC theme with a tree planting ceremony and a performance by our Clontarf dancers. The theme of Always Was, Always Will Be reflects that our first nations peoples have been on this land for over 65 000 years, and their custodianship of it is our Australian history.... The students chose a tree planting ceremony to symbolise this year’s theme. The plaque will remain in our school for years to come as a sign of our commitment to Reconciliation. Our Kirwan High Clontarf Academy Dance Troupe marked the ceremony with cultural dancing.

This year saw a huge turnout for the prestigious ceremony with more than 100 students attending plus a live stream going out to a captivated online audience of parents, friends and supporters. ... 06.01.2022 DRONING ON Year 11 Aviation students have been hard at work building and configuring their remotely piloted aircraft (drone) as part of their study in their dual Certificate in Aviation course. Students have just completed an Engineering Pathways qualification that requires students to learn the theory of engineering pathways and apply that knowledge in a workshop environment in order to build their own drone. ... The students will now progress into their Certificate III in Aviation course in 2021, where they will learn how to professionally and commercially fly their drone by completing this nationally accredited qualification.

05.01.2022 SPORTS ACADEMY MORNING TRAINING AS the school year came to a close year 7, 8 and 9 Sports Academy students concluded their morning training sessions for 2020. All students participated from 6:50AM Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings every week and gave a 110% in each session. Thank you to our External Sporting Provider, CrossFit Townsville, for facilitating these sessions with our Sports Academy coaches. Congrats to all who participated in this program. The Kirwan High community is proud of your efforts.

04.01.2022 PLEASE DON'T STOP THE MUSIC Well done to every Kirwan High student who auditioned for the ensemble yesterday afternoon! More than 120 students across Year 7 - 12 sang and danced to prove they have what it takes to win the battle of the bands in Popstars! The 90's musical. ... We're looking forward to seeing these amazing students on stage, and we're sure plenty of them will make an appearance next Wednesday for the lead auditions!

02.01.2022 VICTORIA SCHOOL MUSIC FESTIVAL With Term 3 winding down the instrumental students of the Creative Arts Academy filmed their entries to the Victoria School Music Festival. This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to showcase the work they have been doing in 2020. ... It will also give the students the opportunity to experience having their performances adjudicated and streamed for friends and family to watch. It was wonderful to see our instrumental students dressed up in their concert dress and performing again. We look forward to seeing the videos streamed to celebrate the wonderful talent of our instrumental students!

02.01.2022 INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AT KIRWAN HIGH At present, we have five international students at Kirwan State High School. Due to COVID19 restrictions, our numbers are low but the students that we do have are certainly great ambassadors for their respective countries. We have Jagdeep from India, Kenny and Tom from Vietnam and Larchlan and Tom from PNG. This year they will be spending Christmas here in Australia, as they are unable to go home due to COVID. ... All of these young men have exemplary attendance rates as well as outstanding marks for effort and behaviour. Despite English being their second language they have achieved some great results. Each of the students received a certificate that acknowledged their effort, behaviour and attendance this year.

Kirwan State High's Showcase Award for Excellence in Global Engagement was presented to Kirwan High and Executive Principal Meredith Wenta and Head of Campus Steve Baskerville accepted the award on behalf of the school. ...
