24.01.2022 CORONAVIRUS | Clearly, social isolating presents problems for people needing witnesses for documents but there are strategies to help while we wait for the ACT to follow NSW's amended requirements, writes Kerstin Glomb, KJB Law's Special Counsel Estate Planning. 24.01.2022 TAX NEWS ALERT | Minors' tax concessions for testamentary trusts have been tightened, KJB Law special counsel Kerstin Glomb writes. In short, they're no longer as generous as before. On June 22, a Bill was approved making tax concessions available to minors from testamentary trusts no longer as generous. A testamentary trust only comes into existence when someone dies. An inter vivos trust comes into existence while the person is still alive. Income from assets transferred to a testamentary trust on or after July 1 last year no longer qualify for the tax concession unless it's income from assets transferred to the trustee from the deceased estate or are an accumulation of such income. To discuss the implications for you and your partner, call us on 6281 0999. Click below for FULL STORY, MORE DETAILS:

We kept a safe distance from each other, but it did feel odd! There was lots to celebrate especially honouring principal and solicitor Andrew Freer for his 25 years’ service at KJB Law. Fellow principal and solicitor Jo Twible said: For his first day at KJB Law, on June 26 in 1995, he baked ...and brought in an orange poppy-seed cake which everyone enjoyed! Anyone who works with him knows he’s incredibly hard-working, kind and compassionate. Des Moore [fellow principal and solicitor] and I couldn’t ask for a better business partner! Then Jo presented him with a Tag Heuer Store watch on behalf of the company and Andrew was overwhelmed. It was the first time I’d ever seen him lost for words! office manager Suzanne Hayes said afterwards. Click below for FULL STORY: See more

07.01.2022 LATEST CORONAVIRUS LAWS | Stricter laws are in place to keep us safe, writes Tom Stayner, of SBS News. So, what are your rights as Australia goes into stage 3 lockdown and authorities begin enforcing stricter social-distancing? We're being told to stay home unless absolutely necessary and that means going to work or school if you can't do it remotely, buying essentials, seeking medical care or exercise. Indoor and outdoor gatherings have now been restricted to just two peop...le, unless they're members of the same household. In the ACT, police can give a warning, followed by fines of up to $8000. How will the rules be enforced? What are your rights if you're stopped by police? What's a "reasonable excuse" for leaving home? How long are the restrictions in place? Read FULL STORY on our site.
