20.01.2022 Know your FAD! Have you fished one of DPI's FADs this season? The FAD season is in full swing and we've been receiving some fantastic reports of mahi-mahi catc...hes over the past couple of weeks, including some quality fish off Sydney. The primary purpose of floating fish aggregating devices (aka FADs) is to aggregate pelagic fish, particularly mahi-mahi which frequent the east coast in the warm waters of the East Australian Current over summer and autumn. The NSW FADs are spread from the Tweed all the way down to Eden. These FADs are anchored to the sea floor and consist of a large floating yellow special purpose buoy with a fixed flashing navigation light. Why not get out there and try your local FAD or one of the new FADs like this one (pictured) recently deployed off Bermagui. Fishers will be able to enjoy the quality fishing to be had on the FADs right through until May when they will be removed for annual winter maintenance. Using DPI's FishSmart app is a great way to find co-ordinates of FADs nearest to you. The app provides a real-time map to locate your nearest FADs (tap on each FAD for its co-ordinates). The FAD program is just one of many initiatives supported with funds from the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust and is a great example of your fishing fees at work. DOLLIE IMAGE: Chris Gray recently caught this nice dolphinfish at the new Bermagui FAD. Great fish, Chris! Big shout-out to Trapman Bermagui and Bermi Bait & Tackle for assisting in finding the best location for the new FAD. Thanks guys!

19.01.2022 Congratulations to Raymon Cooper for catching the first Golden Tagged fish and claiming a $10,000 prize! Ray’s still reeling from his catch, a 48cm estuary perc...h in the Bemm River during a competition yesterday. Fishing from his kayak, he only noticed the tag once the fish was netted and aboard. A few quick fist pumps and he was yelling out the good news to his wife on the bank who joined in the celebrations from dry land. Ray’s still in Gippsland enjoying more fishing, and is already making plans for a return trip, hopefully with a new sounder and boat cover courtesy of his winnings. His favourite fish are bream and flathead (and maybe now EPs too hey Ray?) and he’s right across what Target One Million is all about thanks to watching plenty of Talking Fishing TV. Want a chance at your own $10,000 prize? Then get out to East Gippsland or North East Victoria this long weekend and get casting! Learn more at www.vfa.vic.gov.au/goldentag. 19.01.2022 School holiday trout stocking The Department of Fisheries have once again stocked our local lake with fish. If you are within the 5km zone, and follow appropriate social distancing rules you can head down and have a go. At Rowville Lakes 550 fish have just been released (400 into Sutton Lake, 150 into Hill Lake). At Ferntree Gully Quarry 450 fish have been released The rainbow trout stocked are advanced yearlings and are suitable to be caught immediately. Rainbow trout are... a good option for children or those trying fishing for the first time, because they are relatively easy to catch and take a variety of baits and lures. This stocking program aims to encourage families to go fishing, particularly during school holidays. Anglers are reminded that a daily bag limit of five trout applies, of which only two can exceed 35 centimetres. Fish stocking is funded by recreational fishing licence fees and the State Government's Target One Million plan, which aims to get more people fishing, more often.

09.01.2022 Under new arrangements which come into effect at 11.59pm on Tuesday 12 May, Victorians can go fishing or boating. However, you should only be undertaking these ...activities if you really need to. If you do go fishing or boating, physical distancing and mass gathering rules apply at all times including at the boat ramp and on your boat. It’s critical that you continue to keep 1.5 metres between yourself and others on land and on-board vessels, and you practise good hygiene. If you feel unwell, even if you have tested negative for coronavirus, it is vital you stay at home. As always though, Victorians are being asked to be considered and use common sense when it comes to their activities. We are all being asked to make sacrifices in order to save lives. You must also ensure that you can drive to and from your fishing or boating destination within the day Victorians can view the updated Stay at Home Directions here: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/state-emergency Maritime Safety Victoria Victorian Fisheries Authority Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning

24.12.2021 Bemm River with the boys, turned into Bemm River with a bonus for Callan Spherenzeel. Callan reeled in a beautiful 39cm bream sporting a Golden Tag worth $200...0. He has his brother to thank for the prize because he spotted the winning tag. It had a fair bit of weed on it and I didn’t notice the tag at all. To be honest I didn’t even remember the area had Golden Tag fish until my brother spotted it and got very excited. I’m not sharing the money with him though, Callan laughed. Instead, Callan is buying himself new fishing gear and finishing off his Christmas shopping - so his brother might be in for a pretty good gift this year. The bream was caught on a soft plastic Callan cast into deeper water after banking the boat on an island and wading out. It was so exciting and really made the weekend. My dad and brother were there and a few mates. I caught it on the Sunday, so it made for a great end to the weekend.
