25.01.2022 Redland council can continue blaming the State for these terrible outcomes for koalas and the natural environment but the community aren't stupid and know that our paid representatives can do more to push back at the State and can do better with their own planning legislation (starting with the City Plan) to protect what makes Redlands such a unique and special place.

25.01.2022 A worthy project being funded by Redlands council to obtain information on the remaining urban koalas to find out their health and breeding status and also their movement patterns. This research being conducted by the Sunshine Coast Uni has in the past couple of years confirmed that the Redlands mainland koala population still has enough genetic diversity that is worth preserving. KAG has consistently maintained that more can be done to ensure that koalas remain a part of mainland Redlands identity starting with Council as a whole acknowledging their value as a world iconic animal that has major tourism potential. A prime example is the Toondah Harbour koala colony at Cleveland who live on the doorstep of where tourists leave to travel to North Stradbroke Island. Surely this is a no-brainer!

25.01.2022 We hope Mabel can recover and be released with her youngster back to where she lives near the Eddie Santagiuliana Way at Cleveland.

24.01.2022 Remember that koalas, especially the younger ones are dispersing to find their own home range (territory). Be extra careful driving at night and keep pet dogs confined overnight to allow safe movement for wildlife through neighbourhoods.

24.01.2022 All has been quiet recently on the future of the remaining trees at Cowley St, however the koalas that call these trees home are relying on decision makers to get a better outcome for their future survival in this area.

24.01.2022 Don't forget it's the middle of breeding season so slow down when traveling around koala areas (such as Cleveland) at night. Keep pet dogs on leads when walking in parks and inside or enclosed on a deck overnight to help wildlife move safely around our neighbourhoods. Report all sightings to https://koalagroup.asn.au/report-a-koala-sighting/

23.01.2022 The future of these precious animals are under threat from the proposed Toondah Harbour development. If you haven't already done so please sign and share the petition.

23.01.2022 KAG has been saying this in submissions for over a decade. An independent assessor is a must as governments have shown time and time again that the environment is not high on their priorities and its development at any cost.

22.01.2022 Toondah Koala 'Tyler' was seen in the 'family tree' in Shore St East at Cleveland today. He moves regularly between here and the foreshore area at the rear of Star of the Sea Primary School therefore crosses Middle St and Shore St East. KAG knows this from the science we obtained during the Toondah koala tracking project conducted a few years ago. https://koalagroup.asn.au/toondah-koala-tracking/ Tyler is just one of many koalas facing a death sentence if the Toondah Harbo...ur development proposal is approved. The significant increase in traffic created by building 3600 apartments (housing for up to 10,000 residents) to be built in Moreton Bay Marine Park (equates to the size of a new suburb) and cannot possibly be mitigated by any means of road treatment or pie in the sky ideas of a fauna overpasses. The simple fact is, this environmentally destructive development is wrong on so many levels and threatens many endangered species as it will destroy the Ramsar protected wetlands they call home. Please sign this petition to the Palaszczuk government asking they withdraw their support for this proposal and implement other measures to afford koalas and their habitat better protection. https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details See more

21.01.2022 Last chance to sign this petition and let the State government know that there's still plenty more to do if they are serious about meaningful koala conservation.

21.01.2022 Three things which everyone can do to help koalas in the Redlands: 1. Drive carefully, especially after dark. 2. Ask your local councillor to support wildlife c...orridor protection in the City Plan, at the Council meeting on Wednesday 5 August. 3. Sign and share this petition to Queensland Parliament which spells out six actions to protect koala habitat in south east Queensland: https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details See more

20.01.2022 Only a few weeks left for young people to enter a short video into the CICADA film awards. Any environmental topic can be used including koala/habitat conservation. Have a go to put your view forward and help make a difference!

20.01.2022 See below a link to a template letter addressed to the federal environment minister Sussan Ley and please consider using it to send a letter asking that she reject the Toondah Harbour proposal. You can add/edit in your own words to get the message across that the koala population will not survive the significant increases in traffic created by such a massive development( or similar).

19.01.2022 Please keep an eye out for koalas in local parks and your backyard if you have a pet. We recently lost a koala that had been attacked by a dog at Henry Ziegenfu...sz Park. Young koalas are currently dispersing, this means theyre leaving their mums home ranges and heading out to look for their own trees. These young koalas sometimes travel long distances to find a new home, often through our local parks and yards. We all love our pets, and they need exercise as much as we do. Keeping your pets secured or under control though, especially at night, will help these young koalas travel through safely.

19.01.2022 With one more sleep until Christmas Day the Wild Redlands Christmas Countdown concludes with a koala in a gum tree. This koala female is known as Callie (ear ta...g 3901). She was photographed this morning near Nandeebie Park, about 200 metres south of Toondah Harbour. Best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a wild New Year. Here's the complete 2020 Wild Redlands Christmas Countdown: https://www.facebook.com/wildredlands/posts/2979499198945320

19.01.2022 What have some of the Toondah koalas been up to in the last couple of weeks during breeding season? Will the outcome of tomorrow's election in the seat of Oodgeroo help determine the future of these koalas? Disappointingly, both Labor and LNP candidates support the environmentally destructive Toondah Harbour development proposal to destroy more than 100 acres of protected wetlands nearby where this koala colony call home. They cannot possibly survive the significant impacts from traffic that will be created both during the 20 year construction phase and an additional 10,000 residents that will be living in 3600 units proposed to be built in high rise towers in Moreton Bay. Independent candidate for Oodgeroo, Claire Richardson and the Greens party candidates do not support this development proposal.

19.01.2022 Tyler koala spent most of yesterday next to the Eddie Santagiuliana Way, about a 100 metres south east of the proposed Toondah Harbour environmental destruction... area. Tyler is a local legend. He was one of eight participants in the Koala Action Group's Toondah koalas tracking program in 2016/17. Tyler and other koalas in south east Queensland need effective State Government protection of their habitat. Please sign and share this petition to State Parliament: https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details The petition is for Queensland residents but anyone can send an email to Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch at [email protected] See more

18.01.2022 Sign this petition to help send a strong message to the State government that more must be done to help protect koalas from becoming extinct in SEQ. https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details

18.01.2022 Whilst council recently made moves to investigate purchasing some of the Cowley St land, the reality is that the remaining trees on the site that are being utilised by local koalas are not protected at all and unless a deal can be done with the developer to secure the lots that contain these significant old koala food trees.

18.01.2022 Message made loud and clear by a group of Ormiston residents and caring community members. Council need to immediately reinstate protections for habitat starting with adoption of the Council's 'Wildlife Connections Plan 2018'.

17.01.2022 Ormiston Koala Safe Neighbourhood update Our recent tracking expedition showed a regular day in the life of our Ormiston koalas. Kimo was at Wellington Point..., sunbathing with her joey (who is growing well) at the same spot as always. If you look closely, you can see the joey's head in the picture below. Silkie was also sunbathing, but on a beautiful Blue Gum near Ormiston College. She's shy and doesn't like to show herself. Bruce is the opposite though, he stares at you, showing you who rules the place. Moving to Stevens Place, life is deceptively calm during the day. Our informers tell us nights are a totally different story. Banjo was there, deeply sleeping because even a boss has to rest at some point. Our recently released Bark was there trying to rest, but an annoying mozzie didn't want to leave him alone. Luckily, Bark got rid of it and could eventually sunbathe in peace. We also had an epic special guest, a stunning bearded dragon. That's all folks. See you around Ormiston soon. 17.01.2022 Late yesterday this adorable joey was rescued by Redlands Wildlife Ambulance after somehow becoming separated from her mum. 'Grace' has had a vet check at Aust Zoo Wildlife Hospital and hospital staff say the best outcome would be if she is reunited with her mum. If you see a koala in the vicinity of Wharf and Middle Sts in Cleveland, can you please let us know by pm or Ph. 38235575 or email: [email protected] Thank you for caring!

17.01.2022 The Indigis staff do great work trying to support and protect koalas and Redlands natural environment

17.01.2022 The Redlands urgently needs to implement this vaccination program as the majority of our remaining koalas are now lost to disease. Is it also time to consider a breed and release program in conjunction with this?

15.01.2022 Please support this petition by signing and sharing with others (for Qld residents) to send a strong message to the State government. https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details

14.01.2022 It is unfathomable as to why the Wildlife Corridor Plan was voted down recently (including the Mayors vote) in Council particularly when a few months ago (just before the election) Mayor Karen Williams was vocal about concerns with the State government mapping reducing the amount of protection for koala habitat. KAG's opinion is that the latest Redland City Plan adopted at the end of 2018 is a seriously flawed plan that provides very little protection to the most important wildlife habitat across the Redlands and the Wildlife Corridors Mapping is an opportunity to give some protection back to these areas. Council must let the community have their say on such an important issue that Redlands residents have the right to know about and protecting koalas and the natural environment is a topic that many are passionate about.

14.01.2022 Mabel koala and Pixel her little joey returned to Henry Ziegenfusz Park in Cleveland this afternoon. This video shows the koalas being released and includes some guidelines for watching koalas in the wild to avoid stressing them.

14.01.2022 KAG sent a submission to the EPBC Act review in April this year stating that the Act is too weak and why habitat offsets do not work for species (such as koalas) because the trees are not useful for 7-10 years. The failure of this Act is why Australia has one of the worst records in species extinction and it needs to be fixed urgently. The Toondah Harbour development proposal that will destroy 100 hectares of Ramsar listed Moreton Bay Marine Park and be a death sentence fo...r the koala population is currently being assessed against the Act and common sense suggests that it should be rejected. Especially considering ABC Four Corners program in June last year uncovered Federal Environment department documents showing that the government have always had serious concerns about the proposal stating: "it will seriously disrupt the life cycle of Eastern Curlew and other migratory species", "it is likely to have significant impacts on dolphins, turtles, dugongs and koalas" and "no development of this scale or likely impact has been approved within an existing Ramsar site of Australia" It was also revealed that the then Federal Environment Minister Josh Frydenberg ignored advice of his own environmental advisors who declared the Toondah proposal, 'clearly unacceptable' and would result in 'irreversible damage to a wetland protected under the Ramsar International Treaty'. The State Labor government have the power to withdraw the Priority Development Area over the Toondah precinct at any stage but to date have failed to halt progression of this environmentally destructive development. Please sign the E-Petition calling for an independent inquiry https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details

13.01.2022 An Ormiston koala in Ivory Lane climbing a massive Blue Gum, their favourite food tree. The other images were taken at a nearby site in Cowley St at Ormiston where residents have recently seen koalas frequenting numbers of large Blue Gums. Sadly, all of these significant trees are under threat of being destroyed from future development planned for the site.... This would truly be an unacceptable outcome for this property and Redlands Council must relook at acquiring (through the Environment levy) part of the site that contains many of the larger trees.

13.01.2022 Land clearing for an extreme mini golf game show could have consequences for the area's wildlife, a local conservation group says.

13.01.2022 Redland City Council is asking for community feedback on future uses of the Birkdale land (formerly known as the Commonwealth Birkdale Land). https://yoursay.redland.qld.gov.au/imagine It appears that the visions of some within Council are huge as would be the cost of their extensive public relations campaign that includes multitudes of glossy brochures and professionally made videos. KAG believes the idea of constructing a white water rafting facility and an Olympic sized po...ol is ludicrous considering the volume of water and power required for large pumps needed to operate such a facility. The sites unique natural springs would be threatened by such large scale human interference as would the surrounding vegetation, most of which is koala habitat and 'Endangered Regional Ecosystem'. Serious concerns are held about some of the suggested uses for the 'Adventure and Recreation precinct' and 'Aquatic Centre of Excellence' that include: extreme obstacle course competitions, adventure sports, ninja courses, orienteering, zip lines, high ropes, rock climbing and professional skateboarding. To even suggest some of these demonstrates a complete disrespect and disconnect between the sites heritage and environmental assets. KAG supports low impact community and visitor uses that celebrate and share the fascinating stories and knowledge about this special site that has played an important role in Redlands cultural, farming and military history and is also a safe haven for koalas and other wildlife. 13.01.2022 Koala male with ear tag 3243 (his name is Blake) was climbing in a footpath tree near Henry Ziegenfusz Park yesterday afternoon. We can also report that Mabel a...nd Pixel were sighted nearby, in a tree in the Park. When observing any koalas in the wild please observe these safe koala watching guidelines: Stay 10 metres away from the koala's tree, be quiet, keep dogs well away, never touch the koala's tree. 13.01.2022 Some interesting work happening in NSW to repopulate areas that once had and can still support wild koalas. Are we at the stage in the Redlands where this action is necessary? KAG will be following this wild koala breeding program closely and identify potential land that could be suitable. The Birkdale land at Old Cleveland Rd East and the bushland around Leslie Harrison Dam are 2 areas that immediately come to mind!

13.01.2022 Some good koala news! It's the start of breeding season so be careful and slow down when driving around the Redlands at night as koalas can be encountered crossing roads in unexpected places.

12.01.2022 Would you like to name a local koala? Our research team will be heading out for a few days, starting tomorrow, to tag some local koalas. The koalas will be jo...ining our expanding Koala Safe Neighbourhood program. We need your help though, the team need some fun names for our new koalas. Tell us in the comments below what you think would be a great name, along with the story behind it, and you could end up naming one. The research team will be reading your suggestions and picking names as they find each koala. Last year, Banjo, one of our ambassadors from the Ormiston Koala Safe Neighbourhood was named during a competition at a local school. Now, this could be your chance. As always, our research team from Detection Dogs for Conservation will be taking the utmost care while tracking and tagging the koalas. Our new koala ambassadors will provide us valuable information and data that will help with our ongoing koala conservation programs. The health and welfare of our local koalas is always our first priority. More information will be coming soon on our new Koala Safe Neighbourhoods, so watch this space. Pics: Banjo enjoying his home range in Ormiston.

12.01.2022 Toondah Koala 'Aidan' starred on Ch 7 news this evening and KAG president Debbie Pointing spoke out for these urban koalas that have no protection in the State Government's Koala Conservation Strategy which is not good enough! https://www.facebook.com/7NEWSBrisbane/videos/246750259792810/ If you want to help secure a future for Aidan and his family please sign the koala petition. https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details

12.01.2022 Sadly, KAG has been advised by a member of the public that the mauled remains of a koala was found in Henry Ziegenfusz Park this afternoon and it appears that it's horrendous injuries were caused from an attack from one or more dogs. This is a completely avoidable and unacceptable as Tyler along with numbers of other koalas that live in these areas have the right to be able to move safely around Redlands parks and foreshore areas anytime of the day or night. This is a sad bu...t firm reminder to dog owners that you must be in control of your dogs at all times when walking them as parks are home not only to koalas but many other species of bird life. It is our responsibility as pet owners to both keep our pets safe but also the wildlife that we are privileged to share our neighbourhoods with. Please support Redland koalas by signing KAGs petition asking the State government to do a number of things including withdrawing their support for the Toondah Harbour development that threatens the future of Tyler and the Cleveland koalas. See more

12.01.2022 A reminder for motorists to drive carefully in koala areas, this healthy female koala was sighted on the corner of Channel and Middle St in Cleveland last Friday. The significant increase in traffic that will be created by the nearby proposed Toondah Harbour development will be a death sentence for not only the koalas living in the immediate and surrounding area but all other wildlife that call the Redlands home. Many thousands of additional vehicle movements will be the result of the proposed 10,000 extra residents that will eventually move into the Toondah Harbour precinct, not to mention the traffic chaos for the community.

12.01.2022 Many endangered species are under threat from this mega development including a healthy koala population. Learn more www.koalagroup.asn.au.

12.01.2022 Take a look at this gorgeous video made by the Cleveland Scouts. Keep watching; so much info on how to help koalas. Well done Cleveland Scouts!

12.01.2022 Lackey is back home happy and healthy Lackey is a young 2.5 year old male koala who was rescued by a research team from Detection Dogs for Conservation in Sep...tember. They noticed he looked ill while out searching for koala ambassadors to join our new koala safe neighbourhood at Thornlands. He was carefully taken to Endeavour Veterinary Ecology and diagnosed with Cystitis, before being transferred to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital where their Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors treated him for cystitis and have taken wonderful care of him for the last two months. Now that he’s all better, Lackey is back home and has become one of our newest ambassador koalas. So we’ll be able to monitor his health and movements as he settles back in at Thornlands. We're excited to see what he gets up to. He was released into trees near the intersection of Santagiuliana Parade and Manning Esplanade. So, if you are taking a walk around the area, keep an eye out for Lackey. A big thanks goes to everyone involved in Lackey’s rescue and care.

12.01.2022 We're hoping to find Tyler at this Sunday's Cleveland Koala Count. If you want to help on September 27th at 3.30pm send a message to KAG to express your interest.

11.01.2022 We acknowledge those councillors who support this move and whilst it could result in a win for community to gain extra parkland, it will be a poor outcome for the koalas because the majority of significant trees remaining on this site will eventually be bulldozed.

11.01.2022 Considering the dire predicament that Redlands koalas are in with more than an 80% decrease in numbers over the past 15 years, KAG insists that Redlands Council and the State government do much more to protect habitat and urban koalas that are healthy and breeding, therefore contributing to the future of the koalas in the Redlands. This week a healthy mother and joey were sighted in GJ Walter Park at Cleveland and today on the KAG urban koala walk 2 healthy koalas were sighted at Ormiston, one with a youngster tightly tucked into her tummy. Please help let the State government know that the Toondah koalas matter by signing the e-petition asking for an inquiry into how the Toondah development proposal ever happened. https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details

10.01.2022 A worthy research project being undertaken to learn more about the urban koalas in the Redlands.

10.01.2022 This is rare to see in the wild. Two of the Toondah koala mums (in Cleveland) currently have joeys which seems like a tough job at times so we feel for this mum.

07.01.2022 Koala Action Group President says Walker Group's plans for 3,600 apartments at Toondah Harbour are a "death sentence" for koalas. "Because the koalas that live ...in this environment at the moment cross the roads, and we know that from our tracking project. "They cross the only two roads into the development area, and with such a significant increase in traffic from up to 10,000 people who will call this small area home if it's approved, there's not a chance that they can move across this landscape as they have been doing."

07.01.2022 Toondah koala mum Ruby and her joey were in G.J. Walter Park next to Toondah Harbour, this morning. The Toondah koalas are threatened by plans for construction of 3,600 apartments on wetlands next to this park.

05.01.2022 Help make the State Labor government accountable by signing this petition and please share with others.

05.01.2022 Koalas are still very much on the move during breeding season so be aware whilst driving at night and keep pet dogs confined overnight to make back yards safe for koalas and other wildlife.

05.01.2022 The Toondah Harbour EIS (Environmental Impact Study) is expected to be released in coming weeks and interested parties can 'have a say' on this important document. KAG will host an information session sometime after Easter and invites anyone interested to attend once details are confirmed.

04.01.2022 UPDATE: We have our ten trial participants now. Thanks to everyone who volunteered. For everyone else, keep an eye out for the launch of Redlands Coast Koala Wa...tch in March 2021. ------------ Our koala researchers need your help Our researchers do a great job, but they can’t cover the whole Redlands Coast. So, over the last few months we have been quietly developing a local citizen science program called Redlands Coast Koala Watch to help them gather the data they need. We will be launching the program early next year, but we need ten Redlands Coast residents to trial the program for us first. All you have to do is register, go out koala spotting and then submit a few sightings online. We’ll give you plenty of resources to help. We'll also get you to fill in two quick surveys over the next month. Your feedback will help us make sure the program is user friendly and the data collected meets quality standards. To participate, or to get more information, please message IndigiScapes today with your name and email address.

04.01.2022 Please be careful when driving in and around the Toondah Harbour precinct as although it's not yet breeding season, koalas still move between trees so will still be crossing roads. The same applies for other areas of the Redlands so please slow down at night to help protect our wildlife

04.01.2022 A peaceful protest has been organised by Ormiston residents this morning at 9am outside Redland City Council building in Bloomfield St, Cleveland to highlight the lack of protection for koala habitat. The recent clearing of 100 year old trees at Cowley St Ormiston (see photo in ABC article) is an example of the need for all levels of government to do much better!

04.01.2022 Too precious to risk their future!

04.01.2022 This artist impression of the mega Toondah development is a more true representation of what the area will look like. It was commissioned by Claire Richardson who is running as an independent candidate in the Cleveland seat of Oodgeroo. The picture provides the community with a better understanding of the change to the visual amenity of the area if this environmentally destructive development is approved. Disappointing, the current State members Don Brown, Kim Richa...rds and Mark Robinson continue to support this proposal even though community surveys indicate that 85% do not agree that high rise development on Ramsar protected wetlands in a Marine Park is acceptable. The future of many endangered species are under threat including the resident koalas. Please sign the KAG petition and share with others. https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details See more

03.01.2022 KOALA GROUP PETITIONS PARLIAMENT FOR KOALA PROTECTION A Toondah Koala and its tiny joey sit in a gum tree in Cleveland's GJ Walter park, adjacent to Moreton B...ay and near the departure point for ferries to Stradbroke Island. The Koala Action Group (KAG) is tired of Labor's inaction over the sharp decline in Koala numbers, including in the Redlands where KAG is based. Their latest newsletter states: "The Palaszczuk Labor government continues to ignore the advice of their own Koala Expert Panel as well as thousands of submissions submitted to the draft Koala Conservation Strategy (KCS) that expressed concerns about the removal of habitat mapping previously protected by the State government. In the Redlands, the draft KCS shows a reduction of more than 50% of protected habitat which KAG believes is completely unacceptable and deserves an explanation." The newsletter also focuses on the State Government's Toondah Harbour real estate scheme: "...The LNP declared the Toondah Harbour Precinct a priority development area (PDA) with the original development plan being for 800 residential units, a mix of commercial uses and a 400 berth marina. In 2015, the Labor government were unexpectedly elected into office and it was anticipated they would withdraw the PDA. Astonishingly, not only did they support the Toondah Harbour proposal, they secretively gave the green light for billionaire developer Lang Walker to increase the footprint of the development area (in Moreton Bay Marine Park) and the number of residential units morphed from 800 to 3600." You can read KAG's latest newsletter here - https://koalagroup.asn.au/newsletters/ If the Toondah scheme proceeds, the Toondah Koalas will not survive up to 10,000 people living on their doorstep. And all Redland mainland koalas will be under increased threat as the increase in vehicles on roads will be significant and Koala movement corridors will be impacted. The Koala Action Group, through its President, is petitioning Parliament, calling for immediate action on Koala protection. Their petition also calls for the withdrawal of the Toondah Harbour PDA over Ramsar protected wetlands and the adjacent public park inhabited by Koalas, including those in the photo - https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au//petit/petition-details Photo: Koala Action Group Qld Inc.

01.01.2022 Koalas are just one of many reasons for this environmentally destructive development to be rejected as the video below shows. Many species of critically endangered and vulnerable animals will be impacted on if the government allows 100 acres of protected wetlands to be destroyed for 3600 units to be built. The Guardian reported this morning the murky dealings between the State and Federal government which are disgraceful and a betrayal of the community's trust. https://www.theguardian.com//frydenberg-proposed-delisting

01.01.2022 Great news for these Cleveland koalas! Remember to report koala sightings to www.koalagroup.asn.au/report-a-koala-sighting/. Get a photo if possible, however try to give the koala a bit of space by not touching the tree trunk and please keep pet dogs well away from the base of their tree so not to frighten them.
