22.01.2022 An important message from our beloved Primate, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, regarding the Turkish governments callous decision to convert the Holy Monastery of Chora into a mosque:
22.01.2022 The ladies of our parish were once again hard at work earlier in the week, this time promoting the recently established St Elesa Food Initiative. To be more precise, to announce the Initiative to the wider public, Mary Stathos, Androulla Condoleon, Eirini Savvas, and Nektaria Tsoukarellis visited 2MM Radio Station (1665 AM Sydney), which has been keeping the general Greek-Australian community of Sydney and Wollongong informed on important issues for several decades. They also... visited a beloved shepherd of the wider Greek Orthodox community and of the poor especially, namely, the Very Rev. Father Nektarios Zorbalas of the Parish of Sts Constantine and Helen, Newtown, who graciously affirmed that he would help spread the word. This was in addition to the much-respected Greek Welfare Centre located in Newtown, and the similarly admired local organisation, Kogarah Community Services. We sincerely thank the respective hosts on these occasions and look forward to experiencing the growth of the St Elesa Food Initiative through their support. We also express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in the Initiative. By the grace of God there are, in fact, too many contributors to list here.

14.01.2022 On Thursday 12 November, Mr Constantine Papas (Electrical Engineer and graduate of the University of Sydney) gave a masterful presentation for the newly established Our Lady of Myrtles Fellowship. In his talk, titled ‘Discovering God on the Way to the Moon,’ Constantine shared his passion for the ‘Golden Age’ of space of exploration whilst highlighting its motivations and development, at the same time appealing to the Scriptures and wider Orthodox tradition as concerns time, ...space, and the beauty of creation. In short, he movingly underscored the Christian (and not simply political) convictions of the initiators and participants of the first American space missions, as demonstrated, for instance, by their reading of Genesis from the moon on a certain Christmas day. Constantine also discussed the essential role of St Porphyrios of Kavsokalyvia and his spiritual son, Professor Antonis Kontaratos, in the rescue of the Apollo 13 crew. We thank him for emphasising the wonders that can be accomplished when scientific expertise and faith in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, are brought together for the progress of all humanity.

04.01.2022 A message from our beloved Primate, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia, regarding today, World Mental Health Day.
04.01.2022 Yesterday evening, as our parish was holding a moving all-night vigil in honour of the Holy Martyr Agathonikos, His Grace Bishop Emilianos of Meloa (Vicar-General of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia) kindly made time to deliver the ninth instalment in the Nepsis homiletical series hosted by the Central Youth Committee of New South Wales. More precisely, in the hall next door, His Grace continued his exploration of Elder Aimilianos of Simonopetras celebrated book... (On Vigilance). His Grace began by taking questions from the audience, reiterating Elder Aimilianos teaching that continued watchfulness in relation to the mind eventually becomes a habit, allowing us to discern and master our thoughts. Our beloved Bishop affirmed that this process leads to an interiorly peaceful and prayerful state through which we may arrive at union with our Lord Jesus Christ. Moreover, our Vicar-General asserted that negative thoughts may stem from a wide range of factors, including selfishness, forgetfulness, ignorance, and the demonic realm; in fact, even biological issues such as fatigue, hunger and hormones can adversely affect the soul. Hence the need for patience and understanding, both with respect to ourselves and our fellow human beings. On a related note, drawing on Elder Aimilianos incredible book, His Grace clarified that the virtue of humility requires sacrifice and condescension in the positive sense. For instance, the more spiritually mature spouse in a relationship must meet the needs of the other to raise them to Christ. Returning to the topic of vigilance, His Grace restated the gracious Elders conviction that we deny conversation with our thoughts by reciting the anchor for spiritual vigilance namely, the Jesus Prayer insofar as there is no such thing as a blank mind. Moreover, our Bishop affirmed that we need to recognise our physical and psychological limitations as concerns practical asceticism and contemplation; we must give to our God as much as we can manage, remaining honest with Him in an earnest relationship. Otherwise, we may become narcissistic in attempting to move beyond our limits, thus succumbing to temptation. The audio of the talk will be uploaded to the website of the CYC in due course (visit https://www.cycnsw.org.au/nepsis-series). We thank His Grace Bishop Emilianos for his wonderful spiritual exploration and look forward to the next instalment. This is scheduled to take place on Friday 4 September at 6:30pm. The CYCs registration link shall be posted soon.
