22.01.2022 Another factor of resilience is the dynamic way in which we interact within our environment and those people that are within it. When we are comfortable within our environment, feel supported, have positive leadership, peers and shared values we are more likely to focus on the task at hand, shown increased courage, creativity and work outside of our comfort zone. In contrast, when we are within an environment that is uncomfortable, feels unfamiliar, foreign have poor leadersh...ip, poor culture, conflicting values and offers no feelings of safety or support. We are more likely to focus on threat or fear-based information and cues, avoid being vulnerable or standing out, reduce our creativity and work well within our comfort zone and level of safety. Within the right environment, we are willing to take on challenge and look for the information to resolve any obstacle because we feel safe and supported. If we don’t feel safe and supported we are unwilling to take risk and will avoid being vulnerable or feeling exposed to decrease any further feeling of discomfort.

21.01.2022 Mindfullness based practices for resilience, some considerations from the research. Mindfulness based practices for increasing resilience have shown to provide positive benefits for almost all participants, however there are some things to consider and understand. Despite positive results the effect size has only been small to moderate and mostly been measured through self reporting of feelings of resilience with limited evidence of transfer to adverse situations. The researc...h has also mostly used supervised professionally delivered practices of between 6-8 weeks with only a handful conducting follow on measures. The bottom line is, mindfulness can provide a positive benefit when incorporated into a system of positive behaviours that is part of a long term lifestyle. If you are using it because it’s easy and requires minimal effort and have read some popular science articles or to dig yourself out of a hole and unlikely to be doing it in 6 months, then you are not likely to see any significant long term improvement. It is a positive habit as part of a larger behavioural approach. Not an easy quick fix.



21.01.2022 As we begin our journey into 2021 to assist in making this a truly memorable year, over the next several weeks/months we will be providing complimentary resilience training through summaries of the current science on resilience and mental strength by our performance director Daniel Cooper. To start with, let’s first clarify what resilience is not, resilience is not some fixed or stable attribute that people either have or do not have. If we let ourselves believe it is a fixed... attribute, then we run the risk of developing a belief that we are not resilient the first time we can-not overcome adversity and continue to look for supporting evidence which subconsciously drives our actions. This then increases our risk of future failure as our beliefs continue to influence our thoughts, actions and ultimately our outcomes. 19.01.2022 Resilience is the ability to withstand pressure and how we use and maintain our personal qualities under pressure. When we perceive pressure, usually in the form of identifying a threat to us or to our current task it initiates an increase in our threat response and change in our emotional state. This often leads to a number of changes to our cognitive function that can then negatively impact the way in which we filter the environment for threat or the task-relevant informat...ion that we need to successfully conduct the task at hand or accurately forecast what we need to do. If we can regulate our reaction or response we can then maintain our focus more on the relevant information that we need to execute our actions and behaviours to successfully complete our task. Regulating this cognitive function is key to maintaining our ability to perform under pressure.

This need for certainty though, stops us from confronting the unknown even when it might offer a way out. 15.01.2022 Komanchi Tactical - Data from SOF on injuries; - Preventable musculoskeletal injuries comprised 76.9% of all injuries - Command Organized PT comprised 60.0% of all preventable injuries. - 24.9 musculoskeletal injuries per 100 subjects per year for preventable injuries - 18.9 musculoskeletal preventable injures per 100 subjects per year... "The data suggest a significant proportion of injuries are classified as preventable and may be mitigated with human performance programs." 06.01.2022 Resilience is not just about the individual, it is a combination of all the environmental factors and the people interacting within it. Our environment and the people we interact within it acts upon us and influences and conditions the way we respond to set back and challenge. Within specific circumstances and contexts, our environment and those who have influence or positions of authority over us can have a significant positive or negative impact and can either support or hinder us in our level of reaction and resilience. In the right environment, with the right people and positive leadership, relationships and guidance we can develop tremendous resilience and overcome extreme adversity.

As a young paratrooper, our director of performance Daniel Cooper was unsure about doing selection for Military Special Operations until he made a choice.
