21.01.2022 Lightning Ridge - Home of the unique ‘Black Opal’. These opals are extremely rare and only found in Australia. They were first discovered in ‘The Ridge’ during the 1870’s, but weren’t marketed until the early 1900’s. Today, they are very popular and the most valuable of all opals. Lightning Ridge is a very interesting town to say the least. The car door self guided tours and Bottle House Museum add to its quirkiness. It’s also home to the rustic corrugated church, built for the movie ‘Goddess of 1967’. Lunatic Lookout, which oversees the open cut mine, the soothing artesian baths, walk through mine and Coopers Cottage are all on the tourism hit list as must sees. 09.01.2022 The Box Vale Track, Southern Highlands NSW: This 4.5km track follows the historic railway line to the base of a steep hill, where the Mittagong Coal Mining Company opened a new seam of coal in 1883. The seam was said to be twenty-nine feet thick and on par with the quality of coal found in Newcastle. Although there isn’t much left in terms of the railway line, the track does take you through a 90m tunnel used by the old locomotives. The track is alive with colour, offering side trails to lookouts and the beautiful ‘Forty Foot Falls’. The Box Vale Track is an easy out and back walk, made harder only by adding the challenging descent to the bottom.
