22.01.2022 You are not doing it wrong. To all those mums (and dads) tackling the challenge of home schooling. If you read only one thing to prepare for home schooling. Read this.

18.01.2022 It’s time to let it go. Words- Author Unknown.

18.01.2022 This is a disgrace Victoria. Survivors of sexual assault silenced. Unable to use their real names to protect the privacy of the perpetrators of their abuse. Yet again, victims blamed, and perpetrators protected. Words. fail. https://www.news.com.au///da5cdd91a7f314fb0aa6636f11221a91

18.01.2022 We should absolutely be prioritising mental health and well-being in schools. Social and emotional learning facilitates the development of the whole person. Academic growth can only be optimum when children are thriving emotionally.Whilst most of us are embarking on the somewhat daunting task of home schooling- during this time it is important to remember that above all else, the mental and emotional health of our children is THE most important thing. Take care of that and the rest will follow.

17.01.2022 Taking care of yourself is perhaps the most powerful thing you can do in these uncertain times. Keep it simple and be consistent.

17.01.2022 Exciting news from the recently announced 2020 budget. The most significant announcement for mental health is the doubling of Better Access sessions from 10 to 20 sessions, for anyone eligible for a Mental Health Care Plan. This is a welcome announcement and one so many of us have been working towards for some time. This is an acknowledgement of the immense value of psychologists and mental health professionals to the community. Secondly, further funding in the Federal Budget... will support the continuation of telehealth as a further measure to ensure access and equity for all of the community. In 2020 telehealth has quickly become a popular and effective modality for psychologists to consult with their clients. The temporary COVID-19 Medicare telehealth items have demonstrated that telehealth works, and that psychologists and their clients like it for its safety, effectiveness and because it facilitates more equitable access for more vulnerable people. Great news.

15.01.2022 Love seeing high profile men speaking openly about mental health and the importance of prioritising self management for good mental health.https://www.broadsheet.com.au//meditation-nature-and-ameri

15.01.2022 A timely reminder. If only our response to our ongoing mental health crisis was on a scale anywhere near that of our current health crisis..

15.01.2022 "I've always believed that if you put in the work, the results will come." "I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed." "My attitude is that if you push me towards something that you think is a weakness, then I will turn that perceived weakness into a strength."... "If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it." We’ve been watching the Michael Jordan doco ‘The Last Dance’ and it’s a surprising inspiration. Michael Jordan has long been considered and referred to as a an example of the champion mindset, a demonstration of how character work ethic and resilience trump ability. It’s not just in the sporting world- Corporates use his story to build leadership and the lessons are relevant for everyday success. As Carol Dweck, author of Mindset, would say, Jordan is a prime example of the growth mindset. It's the mindset that almost every successful athlete who has had long-term success has. It says genetics may determine the starting line, but hard work determines the finish line. Failure isn't just accepted; it's expected. When you stretch yourself past your current limits, failure is inevitable. It spawns growth. You only reach the top and stay at the top by continually improving. Winning isn't everything. Growing is.

15.01.2022 An oldie but a goodie, and how sweet are these lyrics?! We can’t choose to only experience the joy life has to offer, we must embrace the uncertainty, take the chance, and ride the roller coaster of ups and downs.

14.01.2022 These words were spoken by a brave client of mine in a recent session and I had to stop him to write it down as it resonates true for so many! He was referring to the various ways we protect ourselves from painful emotions; by avoiding (social withdrawal, drugs, alcohol etc), overcompensating (pretending to be, or feel, something we are not), disconnecting from people, and generally trying to block the emotions we feel here and now. The problem is, we invariably create more pain and suffering by not allowing vulnerability to facilitate connection with others and with ourselves. Sometimes the very thing we do to cope, becomes the problem we need to overcome. I am so grateful to all the wonderful, courageous humans with whom I have the privilege of working with every day.

14.01.2022 New week. New attitude. Hope it’s a good one.

14.01.2022 If you obsess over whether you are making the 'right' decision, you are basically assuming that the universe will reward you for one thing and punish you for another. The universe has no fixed agenda. Once you make ANY decision, it works around that decision. There is no right or wrong, only a series of possibilities that shift with each thought, feeling, and action you experience. Don’t allow fear, doubt and the uncertainty of ‘what if’.. to hold you back from what could be...

12.01.2022 When the road is long and the destination seems far, remember: ‘little by little, a little becomes a lot’. Small actions performed consistently create change over time. Don’t stop

12.01.2022 Research indicates the most important predictor of a child’s emotional and psychological stability is the closeness of the parent/child relationship. https://www.gottman.com/blog/parent-child-wants-talk/

05.01.2022 Such an important topic not spoken nearly enough about. It’s not just the stereotypical ‘alcoholics’ who struggle with this, it’s every day people trapped in a culture where it’s not ‘normal’, it’s not ‘ok’ NOT to drink. When your choice not to drink triggers a negative reaction in people around you, remember that’s more about their insecurities, and not yours. https://apple.news/AyS02kb5rSsmkWvUWVTelQQ

04.01.2022 'Don't ask your teenager 'what do you want to BE when you grow up..' ask them instead, 'what problem do you want to solve." This is a gorgeous little TED talk, inspiring us to let go of our expectations of what we 'should' be, and instead follow our heart to where we want to be. If you have a teenager it's well worth sharing.. https://www.ted.com//gahmya_drummond_bey_teaching_kids_to_

04.01.2022 If you saw my last post regarding the gag laws on survivors of sexual assault, you might be interested to know that as a results of the #letusspeak campaign those laws are set to be overturned by the end of the year. See link below. This is a massive win for survivors of sexual assault, and ALL victims of crime. If you think your voice doesn’t count, think again. https://apple.news/AZEHMmELaScSVvxoAA1wZkw

02.01.2022 Sometimes what we want, is not what we ‘need’..

30.11.2021 Schema Therapy is a treatment with proven efficacy in treating a range of issues, including trauma. The main goals of Schema Therapy are: to help patients strengthen their Healthy Adult mode; weaken their Maladaptive Coping Modes so that they can get back in touch with their core needs and feelings; to heal their early maladptive schemas; to break schema-driven life patterns; and eventually to get their core emotional needs met in everyday life.

31.10.2021 So true. Setting limits and encouraging responsibility is such an important part of parenting. We need to let them make mistakes, and learn how to correct, or learn from them.

26.09.2021 If we only look at the symptom, or more specifically the ‘coping behaviour’ we will miss the root cause, the ‘why’ for that behaviour. Asking what or where the behaviour or symptom stems from, allows access to the source and enables change on a deeper level.

13.09.2021 Suicide among teenage girls already exceeds annual suicide numbers in this cohort for three of the past four years. I am exasperated at the lack of attention this receives by both media and government. There is simply not enough being done to acknowledge, let alone address this national crisis. https://www.theaustralian.com.au//5a760eb4130e8f652d27f6be

05.09.2021 Mia Freedman nails it- the key is ditching the ‘all or nothing’ attitude and making exercise ‘non negotiable’. Women need to stop seeing exercise as punishment for bodies we dislike, and start seeing it as an essential strategy for maintaining our physical AND mental health.

29.08.2021 A ‘typical’ trauma response could include a range of different behaviours/reactions. We do not all respond to trauma in the same way, although all humans are susceptible to the impact of trauma. Trauma can and does impact mind, body, and soul, and the treatment approach should incorporate an understanding of this. It is important to acknowledge and understand your own, or a loved ones, individual coping style as this allows healing through greater empathy and connection.
