21.01.2022 Recovery Plan for the southern cassowary Casuarius casuarius johnsonii Prepared by Peter Latch for the Cassowary Recovery Team ://www.environment.gov.au/system/files/resources/79235f07-9c32-45fa-b868-eb248691e945/files/sth-cassowary.pdf

19.01.2022 Tragic news today that another of Elvis’ chicks has been hit by a vehicle on the highway and killed. From four beautiful baby cassowaries born in September 2019... to now just one remaining. Highways through rainforests are lethal for our wildlife. We are so sad to see this happening every year. #wettropicsmanagementauthority #kurandavillage #cairnsaustralia #athertontablelands #holidayherethisyear #travelqueensland #cairnstourism #cassowaryconservation #explorequeensland #beautifulaustralia #amazingaustralia #savethecassowary #australialovesyou #tropicalnorthqueensland #takemetoaustralia #surviveandthrive #kuranda #loveaustralia #farnorthqueensland #exploretnq #ig_discover_australia #cassowariesofinstagram #australia_oz #discoveraustralia #wow_australia #exploringaustralia #travelaustralia #ig_australia #queensland #exploreaustralia @ Kuranda, Queensland See more

18.01.2022 Let’s hope this will have some impact on people’s behaviour and slow down on a point were cassowarys crossed the road daily

17.01.2022 New walking trail for Kuranda - under construction now!

17.01.2022 Here follows Kuranda Conservation's letter (email) to: Darryl.y.Jones Ing Z Toh BUCHANAN Scott CARMICHAEL Terry JOYCE Michael REMEDIAL ACTION FOR CASSOWARY DEATHS ON KURANDA RANGE ROAD, KURANDA We at Kuranda Conservation offer the following suggestion as to how the cassowary fatalities on the 80 kph overtaking lane could be mitigated: The stretch of road, the subject of this submission, is between the bus depot at the Kuranda end and the change of speed limit from 60kph to 80kph which coincides with the widening of the road to 4 lanes, 2 up and 2 down, which allow for overtaking. The speed limit remains at 80kph right through to Mareeba. Roadworks are currently underway at the Kennedy Hwy/Fallon Road/Warril Drive intersectioin, just 1km from the traffic lights at the turnoff to Kuranda at Rob Veivers Drive. We believe a solution to the rush of speed to overtake on that short stretch would ease if the speed limit was reduced to 60kph at the eastern end of that stretch and the line markings were altered to direct traffic into the right lanes in both directions, and the left lanes called 'slow vehicle turnouts'. This would still allow for the smooth flow of traffic while giving drivers enough time to pull up if a cassowary was seen on the road. It would certainly improve the situation where vehicles are now moving in excess of 80kph in an effort to complete their manoeuvre before the road reverts to one lane. We would go further to suggest that, with the new traffic lights being installed at the Fallon Road intersection, the speed limit should remain at 60kph right through to past these new lights. This would make for safer vehicle movements past the Black Mountain Road turnoff, the Kuranda bridge, the Kuranda Cemetery turnoff, the Kuranda Village/Myola Road intersection, Greenhills Road and the other driveways that come straight out on to the highway. It should be noted that many accidents continue to occur at the Kennedy Hwy/Veivers Drive/Myola Road intersection, Even with traffic lights, due to the speed of the through traffic at 80kph. We trust this suggestion is useful. Please find attached photos of the speed related cassowary death. Dianne Daniels (President) Margaret Genever (Treasurer) Jax Bergersen (Secretary) PLEASE FEEL FREE TO USE ANY OF THE ABOVE TEXT TO SEND TO THE ADDRESSEES LISTED. The more people who press the points we've made, the better.

16.01.2022 We’re right behind you, Rebecca.

15.01.2022 Yesterday I drove past a squashed baby cassowary on the Kuranda Range: come on tropical people, residents of this wet tropics paradise, we can do better than that. Just putting this image of a thylacine up to remind us of what can happen if we are not careful.

15.01.2022 It is imperative that we get as many signatures on this petition. Even if you signed the change.org petition, please also sign this one. We’re going right to the top with this to save or cassowaries. Open to Queensland residents. THANK YOU.

15.01.2022 Protecting your land for the future is a massive gift to the planet. Everyone benefits. Thank you Di and Phil Daniels, Dr Raya Mayo, Tracy Dods and Elaine and Mike Roberts. Thanks to all who, in their own capacity, made it happen. YOU CAN DO THIS TOO. WE KNOW HOW. LET US SHOW YOU THE WAY.

13.01.2022 DEVASTATED! Forest, Elvis’ remaining chick was killed this morning when crossing the highway. Transport & Main Roads refuses to lower the speed limit 60 kph. So 3 of Elvis’ 4 killed on the same spot in 3 months! #deadcassowary

So 3 chicks of Elvis on the same spot ! in 3 months .... shortly tourist will not come here to see them because they will be all victim of roadkill .... See more

08.01.2022 FEEDING DOES MATTER! With the recent death of Mrs.C in the Mission Beach area the time has come for the people of Far North QLD who live amongst this iconic key...stone species to do something to change a pattern that has existed for way too long. There is undoubted evidence to suggest that Cassowaries will roam from their natural rainforest environment into urban areas for an easy feed on domestic fruits left out by humans that think they are doing them a favour, like having them around, hope they will be there when relatives visit and many other reasons. Mrs. C was unfortunately known for all the wrong reasons and her habitat was in fact a false environment created by the people who fed her. As you will see in the image and confirmed by Tropical Vet Services who carried out her autopsy it revealed not one skerrick of native fruits or any native matter at all only bananas, cut pears and other domestic fruits eaten that morning just before her death. The third image shows a comparison to what it should look like. There are many causes of wildlife deaths but this is one area that we can all work together and do something about today, it doesn't require spending money, it doesn't require Govt departments, letters to ministers it requires the people that genuinely care about the Cassowary to Stop Feeding Cassowaries so that they have a better chance of roaming for food in their own natural way and in return reducing the amount of road crossings these beautiful animals have to encounter. Another part of this is the disturbing amount of photos that appear where Cassowaries of all ages are at residents back doors looking for handouts, this in turn can lead to others hoping for a similar experience and so the problem manifests. Also it is quite remarkable that no one has been seriously injured as although generally placid it is more good luck than good management that this has not occurred. WE have attended hundreds of wildlife incidents and it is very alarming to see and hear from people the reasons they leave out food and water for Cassowaries, you are not caring for them or protecting them you are contributing to their demise. Please all try to do something about this situation and share to all to get this very important message out! Let our wildlife be wild!

04.01.2022 This is the email I and Kuranda Conservation have received back from Dept Transport & Main Roads: "Dear Jax, Thank you for your emails of 26 May 2020 and 5 June... 2020 about cassowary safety on Kuranda Range Road. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is aware of concerns about cassowary safety on Kennedy Highway near Kuranda. In the interest of consistency TMR sets speed limits in accordance with Australia wide guidelines and at this stage, TMR considers there is no technical justification for changing the speed limit at this location. Arbitrarily lowering speed limits where technical guidelines are not met generally results in poor compliance, inconsistent driver behaviour and reduced safety for road users. The overtaking lanes you refer to in your correspondence are the first overtaking opportunity at the top of Kuranda Range Road. Changing the intent of the lanes by making the left lane an optional turn out lane would reduce the effectiveness of this opportunity. If TMR were to reconfigure the lanes, drivers may get stuck behind slow vehicles that choose not to pull into the left lane. This would increase the risk of drivers attempting unsafe manoeuvres further down the road. TMR currently has no intent to change the configuration of this section of Kennedy Highway. TMR will continue to work closely with local cassowary conservation groups to develop and implement effective strategies to reduce the risk of cassowary strikes on state-controlled roads. I trust this information is of assistance. Kind regards, Ella Bond Project Support Officer (Planning) | Far North District Program Delivery & Operations | Department of Transport and Main Roads" We cannot accept this lying down. If this is not acceptable to you, you must do something about it, like a phone call or email. Certainly, KCons will be going to the top. For us, if the rules (formula) doesn't fit the situation, then change the formula. This is a State Government issue. They just don't get it.

03.01.2022 This is Merlin and his chick who wanders through the yard from time to time. His presence his commanding. He knows he is king of the forest! Unfortunately, fore...st fragmentation, cars and domestic dogs take their toll on the species. Yesterday a neighbouring cassowary was struck and killed by a car. We need to slow down in cassowary country and stop carving up their habitat..

01.01.2022 cassowary bin stickers are in and available through Kuranda Conservation Contact Jax by phone or email and support her incredible work protecting these animals Phone 07 4093 8834 or email [email protected]
