16.01.2022 Long week? Why not unwind with guided walk among the wildflowers

15.01.2022 Our plant of the week is Clematis glycinoides, Headache Vine. It's common name hails from a folk use as a supposed headache remedy, however this evergreen climber's main attraction is it's display of masses of white star-like flowers from late winter to early summer. Growing many meters long along the ground or across climbing supports, it's variable green leaves are insect and bird attracting (great place for a nest) and it's dry fruits have a feathery end that floats away o...n the wind dispersing the seed. Drop by our Wildflower Nursery to pick up tube stock of this great indigenous plant and many others for only $4.

15.01.2022 Ranger Olga spotted this female metallic green carpenter bee (Xylocopa aerata) resting in the sun Xylocopa aerata is one of two species of carpenter bee found only in the conservation areas around Sydney, and in the Great Dividing Range in New South Wales in Australia. Its only other habitat as of 2020 is on Kangaroo Island in South Australia. The species is especially vulnerable to fire, and much of its habitat was burnt during the 2019-2020 bushfire season in Australia.

15.01.2022 It was a busy week at Junior Rangers Club! Our first job was to judge all of the 120 entries in our Nature Photography competition. Voting was a difficult job because there were so many fantastic photos! After that, we celebrated Threatened Species Day by learning all about a local vulnerable species of amphibian, the red-crowned toadlet. This tiny, elusive frog has several known breeding sites here at the Wildflower Garden. The Junior Rangers visited one of these sites and managed to locate nineteen toadlets using only their croaks. We submitted recordings of the croaking to the Australian Museum using the Frog ID App!
