25.01.2022 Day 2 of virtual/distance/home schooling is done! How are all the parenting feeling today? I came across these fantastic free printable pages for kids perfect for our food swap families. "The Just for Kids activities have been developed to help children at home and at school explore Junior Landcare and create their own ideas."... "The activity sheets are based on the activities in the Junior Landcare Learning Centre, and focus on four key areas: food production, biodiversity, waste management and Indigenous perspectives. We will be publishing new content on a regular basis, so be sure to visit Just for Kids again soon." https://juniorlandcare.org.au/just-for-kids/

25.01.2022 Last night as I was eating my tea, I realised something that was pretty cool. Every single thing on our plates was either grown or made buy ourselves or a member of our family. We had a delicious porterhouse, a simple salad, sriracha sauce and garlic butter. The beef was raised by my grandparents. Tomatoes, cucumber, capsicums and pickled jalapeños were all grown right here by us- the jalapenos pickled by us. Beetroot, gifted by a lovely friend, were also pickled right her...e in my kitchen, stored for the year. Garlic butter- you bet ya! Made by me, from local cream, garlic we grew, and parsley from the food swap. Sriracha hot sauce again, jalapenos grown by us, and fermented and made into sauce right here. It gave me a moment of immense satisfaction to know the entire supply chain of the main items of food that we were eating, and got me thinking about what we need to do more of to be more self sufficient in the wake of the current supply chain crisis. Erin sent me this fantastic article (link below) which is a good read about the basis of why people are getting into permaculture and getting back to becoming more self reliant. I’m working from an assumption here that you live in a western country where most things from your food supply to your heating, medicines and even music playback, are currently outsourced largely to corporations whose supply chains (and decision making) are outside of your control. While society is structured for ease of use and convenience, what we lose is the ability to really make decisions about where the products - especially your food- comes from, and we have NO idea what conditions it was made/grown. Who of our followers has been very seriously thinking about these things, wondering what they can do to get more self sufficient?

24.01.2022 Our garlic has only been in a couple of weeks and has shot up fast! Depending on the variety and how the season is going, you can plant your garlic from April right through July! If you see your garlic cloves sprouting, chances are it’s ready to go in the ground! Choose your largest and best looking cloves to plant, pop them pointy end up into some well draining soil, then leave them to do their thing for several months!

23.01.2022 What a wonderful morning here at the Food Swap! A big thank you to Sue from Fab Flowers Kyabram Florist & Nursery who came and talked us through some beginner steps to basic organic gardening at home! It was so lovely to see some new faces too! We had SO much produce on the swapping tables today! A lovely variety of our summer bounty. ... There were 2 pots of mint, and a pot of capsicum Seedlings left over at the end, if any of our lovely followers would like them, please send in a pm and Soph will give you the address for pick up. Next month, we will be bringing Campaspe Shire’s Environmental Projects Officer (Organics) - Sheri Doyle in to talk to us about composting and also a little bit about where your green waste from your green bins goes! You can reserve your seat by clicking this link https://facebook.com/events/s/ky-food-swap-march-2020-compos/164013501571141/?ti=icl Happy Sunday everyone!

21.01.2022 Anyone else have herbs coming out their ears in the garden? Why not cut some back and dry it for future use! Sophie dried some oregano this weekend and we will put the method in the comments for anyone wanting to give this a go them selves!

21.01.2022 Update for this weekends #KyFoodSwap event! It’s still going ahead, with just a few changes.

21.01.2022 Since going live, things have changed. I’ve had word from our guest speeker that due to company policy with the Campaspe Shire that staff will no longer be participating in non essential gatherings. We will reschedule our talk on compost for another time when appropriate. We have also had word within our contacts that the local food banks are low on non-perishable foods, so in lieu of the info session, we will be holding an impromptu food drive to help out these local servi...ces, which will help out those in need at this challenging time. If you can spare it, bring along an item of canned goods or non-perishable foods and we will have a table just for these items to be donated directly to the food bank on your behalf. The event will be shortened to 9:45-10:30 due to these changes.

20.01.2022 If this symbol is not on the compostable bags you use with your green bin, then they are NOT compostable! #wastenotwednesday NO plastic, degradable, or biodegra...dable bags can be put into your green bin as these types of bags do not break down in the composting process. Degradable bags are the WORST kind as they break down into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic and can enter our water ways and harm our wildlife. If you’re unsure as to whether your bags are compostable, check for the seedling symbol. #GiveAScrap A list of outlets that sell compostable bags are available on council's website www.campaspe.vic.gov.au/live/at-home/food-and-garden-waste/

We have got a fair bit going on in the patch, but loving the abundance of herbs, zucchini’s, chillies, strawberries, capsicums and tomatoes! I’ve let some fennel, lettuce, cabbage, basil and catmint go to seed which the bees are absolutely loving! How are your gardens going?... - Soph

18.01.2022 This article hits the nail on the head in regards to all this madness in the supermarkets at the moment. People are fearful and feel out of control. I believe that this fear based shopping is something that people are doing to feel in control over something. "We joke about toilet paper hoarders filling their spare rooms with two-ply, but it’s a symptom of a bigger problem we’re addicted to consumerism, and even the idea of not being able to buy whatever we want, whenever w...e want is enough to make us lose our bloody minds." When in reality the "supply chains that puts food on our family tables are negotiated in multinational boardrooms, and they are more fragile than we might realise." "My late grandmother lived through poverty, wars and military occupation if you had asked her how to prepare for hard times, she’d grab a spade and start digging a vegetable garden." "If things really get bad, the garden growers will be better prepared for the future than the bunker stockers. "If you planted the likes of spinach, Asian greens, snow peas or cabbages this weekend you’d be knee deep in homegrown fresh produce within a month or two, and it could last you all through winter." Stay home and get in the garden! https://www.theguardian.com//think-the-world-is-ending-gra

15.01.2022 Over the last week I noticed an infestation of aphids taking up residence on my Pak Choi plants! I quickly had a read online and was surprised (and a wee bit sceptical) to see a simple solution of water and a few drops of dish washing liquid would be enough to control them. So out hubby and I went with a squirt bottle of mild washing detergent spray, and look! 48 hours later they’re all dead!

11.01.2022 Happy Naked Gardening Day ! You would have to have been very brave to get your gear off outside today ! What a cold snap. Photo credit Janelle Gebbie
