24.01.2022 DETAIL FIRST DECLARED OVERALL WINNER OF TASPORTS LAUNCESTON TO HOBART YACHT RACE 2020 In a perfect end to 2020, Detail First, skippered by Hobart teacher Scott Broadby, was today declared the overall winner of the TasPorts Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race 2020. The crew of Detail First, still coming to terms with their success, accepted the silverware from Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner, AC, Governor of Tasmania, at the official prize giving presentation a...t the Derwent Sailing Squadron today. Detail First needed an entourage of trophy handlers after making an almost clean sweep of all handicap categories winning on IRC, PHS and AMS handicaps overall, and IRC, PHS and AMS handicaps in Division 2. Duncan Hine and Luke Watkins, skipper and navigator of Alive, accepted the trophy for their line honours victory on behalf of owner Phillip Turner, while Mark Bayles, co-owner of Kraken 42s with Andrew Sinclair, accepted the trophy for the ORCi overall winner. The Division 1 winner on IRC was Heatwave Brierley MC, skippered by Matthew Keal while Jazz Player, skippered by John Dryden, won Division 1 on AMS. Dream, the only interstate entry from Victoria, and skippered by Robert Green, took out Division 1 on PHS. The presentations ended a dramatic race which saw two boats dismasted and retirements due to seasickness and rudder damage coupled with some exhilarating and fast racing. The camaraderie among the crews was palpable, as was the relief to be sailing in one of the most watched offshore races for 2020. 18.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT FOOTLOOSE You gotta love the determination of a small boat when they take on the challenge of the Launceston to Hobart Yacht Race. The locally built Young 88, Footloose, just inspires you with what they achieve each year as they return to the race. Stewart Geeves and his crew first entered the race in 2010 and did not waste anytime showing the fleet what they could achieve in an 8.8 metre yacht. When you dive into the history of Footloose you discov...er that this boat is destined to make the finish line, no matter what! In 2010 Geeves had an outstanding performance in his first L2H race. Taking out the overall win Footloose was faced with an early challenge after breaking the tiller in Banks Strait. Quick thinking by the crew had the tiller repaired with gaffer tape for Footloose to continue racing to Hobart for the win. The Footloose crew were at the mercy of the tides and weather gods in 2013 when they spent 8 hours stuck on the hard after the start in the Tamar River. This did not deter Geeves, but when a gale force storm hit the fleet down the East Coast of Tasmania, Footloose was only one of seven boats to finish. With grit, determination and a whole lot of support cheering them on, Footloose arrive in Hobart to a very warm welcome. This will the 11th year for Geeves and his crew racing Footloose in the L2H and as a regular in the results I’m sure they will sail hard and fast to the finish. 17.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT PRIMA DONNA It’s a race against time for Royce Salter and his team at Salter Marine to get Prima Donna back in the water and tuned up to race in this year’s L2H. The glass cedar hull of the Hick 35 has had a complete make over from the dark blue hull to Royce Salter signature boat colours and she is looking very slick. ... Salter will be joined by his partner Heather McCallum, son Julian and a few other well-known locals, David Calvert, David Short and Tom Stearnes, along with Darren Williams from NSW. Prima Donna last raced in the L2H in 2010, but this year Salter and his crew are expected to be very tactical as they take on the competitive fleet. When a sailor in any competition in Australia takes themselves too seriously, they are politely told Come on mate we’re not racing for sheep stations. Salter will certainly be taking this year’s race seriously, but not without a good sense of humour and some friendly banter between the competition. 13.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 ENTRANT ADVANTEDGE A labour of love and a passion for sailing has seen the Jones family come together to undertake a massive makeover of their Inglis 47, AdvantEdge for this year’s Launceston the Hobart. Andrew and Michelle Jones took a break from racing AdvantEdge 8 years ago to support their son, Josh’s, sailing career and since then the boat has been waiting patiently on a hardstand ready for her return to racing. AdvantEdge raced in the L2H between 2010-201...2 and her last race, before temporary retirement was in the 3 Peaks Race. It has been a race against time to get the boat ready, with Fred Barrett Yacht Design modifications and Salter Marine contributing to the makeover. The Jones family have been working long hours, in a team effort, as they bring AdvantEdge back to her former glory. Last year saw Andrew’s brother Michael Jones competing in the L2H in his boat Ambition, but this year the two brothers will be joined by both their son’s, Sam and Josh, and an experienced crew as AdvantEdge tests her capability in a competitive fleet. I think you will agree AdvantEdge is looking like a hot contender for the L2H. 11.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT - SASSY First entering his Polish-designed and build Delphia 37, Sassy, in the 2017 L2H, Tim White and his crew will be backing it up for a 5th year and joining the fleet from their home club Port Dalrymple Yacht Club . White will be joined by his son Ian and it will also be a father and son affair for the rest of the crew with Lynn and Robert Dawson and Jason and Josh Harris sailing together.... It will be a team effort on the 28-29 November, 2020 when Tim, Ian, Josh and Robert complete their Safety and Sea Survival Course in Launceston in preparation for the race. I’m sure there will be a team high 5 when they make it into the life raft during the practical drill and they will be very prepared as they hit the start line on the 27 December. 10.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 ENTRANT FLYIN’ SCUD A veteran of offshore racing, Adam Goode will be no stranger to the challenges of the East Coast of Tasmania. Racing his Lyon’s 40, Flyin’ Scud, heralding from Port Huon, Goode will be joined by a mixed crew of Tasmanian and Queensland sailors. Although Goode has only competed in one L2H, he certainly has the off shore credentials with 12 Sydney to Hobart’s under his belt to add experience to the crew dynamic. His crew will include locals, ...Jeremy Ford, Marcus Carter, Robert Knoop, Victoria Logan and Stuart Denholm. The two Queensland crew, Natasha Edwards and Brent Dowton may be looking to keep themselves rugged up as they acclimatise to the cooler sailing conditions, but the distraction of the scenic conditions of the Tasmanian coastline will no doubt be a winner. 09.01.2022 WELCOME 2020 L2H ENTRANT - TWITCH The syndicate owned Eureka 31 designed boat Twitch will be coming to this years L2H with a lot of crew street cred! Between the crew they have a combined 36 L2H races, 10 S2H races, several M2H and a sneaky Darwin to Arbonne race to round off a very experienced crew declaration. Owners David Rust, Ritchie Upton and Jim Bedford have been campaigning Twitch for several years in the Combined Clubs Series and many other club-based races, particul...arly at their home club of Bellerive Yacht Club. Regulars in the BYC twilight series, Twitch always brings a strong competitive streak to the fleet, while enjoying the mateship of sailing and having some fun along the way. This will be Twitch’s 5th year racing in the L2H and its great to have them back supporting the race.
