25.01.2022 Have you ever wondered how to tell if a cow is happy or not? The farming experts at @AustralianDairy have these tips: Since cows are unable to tell us if they are happy or not, farmers, vets and other dairy professionals rely on behavioural signs to tell them if anything is wrong. Positive behavioural signs we look for in cows to know that they are feeling well include: - Cud chewing and rumination (check out this video to learn more)... - Walking freely - Interacting socially - Grazing and eating well - Bright eyes, clean and shiny coat and wet shiny nose - Body condition score (not too skinny, not too fat) something to note dairy cows store fat and muscle differently to beef breeds - Consistency of their faeces (not too hard, not too runny) - Self-licking + stretching (calves) The old saying that happy cows produce healthy milk is true! Lactating dairy cows are milked every day, which allows us to watch and check on them regularly. The milk is also tested every day which is another way to assess the health and wellbeing of the cow. For example, high levels of somatic cells in the milk indicate a possible infected udder. Farmers act immediately to ensure the milk from that cow is separated from the milk to be sold, and that the cow is treated appropriately. Mooing is one way that they interact and how they express their emotions. They use different pitches of sound to express different emotions. They moo to: seek their herd mates, calf or mother; say they are hungry; call for a partner when they are wishing to mate; raise alarm to warn their herd mates of potential danger; show ...contentment; and express pain. Research shows individual cows have distinct voices, so as they moo to one another, the animals nearby know whos who and a cow and her calf can recognise each other. 03.01.2022 Lactalis Australia has made the decision to close our Rockhampton factory and scale back the production of yoghurt at the South Brisbane factory, due to a decline in available milk. Lactalis has been re-directing milk from SE Qld to operate the Rockhampton factory and transporting milk from other states to make yoghurt in South Brisbane, which is no longer viable. The welfare of employees is our top priority. We are working closely with everyone affected by the changes and lo...oking for opportunities to redeploy staff to other Lactalis locations. No farmers will be affected by the changes and we will continue to purchase milk from our Rockhampton farmers, which will be processed by our Nambour and Brisbane factories. Qld fresh milk will continue to be produced in our Qld factories with Qld employees using the milk from Qld family owned farmers. Qld residents will still be able to enjoy their favourite brands as usual.
