25.01.2022 Watch the attached video. It shows a baby with a cleft palate breastfeeding. Yes, the flow of milk from the mother is augmented by a lactation aid at the brea...st. But the baby is breastfeeding. The pause in the babys chin as he opens his mouth opens to the maximum shows he is getting milk. In most cleft palate programmes around the world, including the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto said to be one of the top cleft palate programmes in the world, mothers are told not even to try breastfeeding. But as you can see, it is possible for a baby to breastfeed with a cleft palate. And this is not the only baby who has breastfed with a cleft palate. Too often mothers are told that such and such a situation makes breastfeeding impossible or that the baby is not yet ready. This is frequent with premature babies whose mothers are told the baby cannot start breastfeeding until 34 weeks gestation, and yet in some countries such as Sweden, babies are going to the breast at 28 and even 27 weeks. This is true if a baby has a heart defect, or a surgical issue (some intestinal problems do rule out breastfeeding immediately, but that is true of any oral feedings). If the baby is anything but physically perfect, and if the mother is anything but perfect, the mother is discouraged from breastfeeding.

17.01.2022 Our focus for 2016 World Breastfeeding Week is "Sustainable Cities and Communities". In the bustle of big cities, breastfeeding mothers and their babies need to... feel safe and welcome in public spaces. When disaster and humanitarian crises strike, women and children are affected disproportionately. Pregnant and lactating women need particular support during such times. We know that mothers who receive support are more inclined to continue breastfeeding. It is therefore our aim for this year to ensure all mums feel supported and confident to feed wherever, whenever they choose including public spaces.

17.01.2022 February has arrived! Any of our topics interest you? Or maybe youd just like an excuse to get out of the house and meet some lovely local mums.

The video includes an animated diagram, a mums point of view and step-by-step instructions. It helps new mums see what good attachment looks and feels like and understand how babies feed.
