13.01.2022 30 September 2019 African swine fever reported in East Timor African swine fever (ASF) has been confirmed in one of Australias closest neighbours, East Timor. There have been 405 confirmed deaths in the Dili Municipality, all relating to smallholder farms which make up the bulk of the industry in East Timor.... From its first incursion into Asia in August 2018, ASF has spread throughout China, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, South Korea, North Korea, Myanmar, the Philippines and East Timor. Source: World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). ASF can remain active in meat products, clothing, equipment and vehicles, and is easily spread through poor biosecurity and swill feeding. The rapid spread of the disease throughout Asia, highlights the severity and potency of ASF. Its spread to the Philippines and East Timor is highly likely to have come from travelling staff and tourists on commercial airlines. This way in which ASF has spread exposes Australias vulnerability, and one which our natural defence as an island will not offer protection from. Australias best protection from ASF is by preventing the arrival and spread of the disease through robust biosecurity at the border and at the farm gate. How to improve your biosecurity preparedness APL asks all producers to be on high alert, revisit their biosecurity plans and to make sure all staff and visitors to your piggery understand their biosecurity obligations. APLs recently updated 30 Minute Plan for Piggeries includes information and assistance which we ask all producers to consider in conjunction with their vet and their current biosecurity plan. Access the 30 minute plan for piggeries Producers can refer to the publications below for additional information and guidance on biosecurity. ASF Factsheet Keeping African swine fever out of Australia Emergency animal disease bulletin for vets Other information can be made available on the APL website at www.australianpork.com.au or at the Department of Agricultures website at www.agriculture.gov.au. 12.01.2022 14 August 2019 WA illegal pig semen importation court decision Yesterday the Perth District Court sentenced those responsible for the illegal importation of boar semen over eight years, to jail terms and monetary penalties.... The Courts judgement sends a significant message to any person or company in Australia seeking to circumvent Australias strict biosecurity laws. The importation of fresh pork or genetic material from foreign countries poses unacceptable risks for the transfer of foreign diseases and the health of Australias pig herd. Mr Torben Sorenson received 3 years imprisonment (minimum 18 months non parole), Mr Henning Laue received 2 years (minimum 8 months non parole) and GD Pork received a fine of $500,000. Torben Sorensen, Henning Laue and GD Pork Pty Ltd were all found guilty of breaching section 67 (3) of the Quarantine ACT 1908 (Cth) illegal importation and section 186 (4) of the Biosecurity ACT 2015 (Cth) Contravening conditions applying to conditionally non-prohibited goods brought or imported into Australian Territory. APL supports this decision. APL has been working closely with authorities since the breach was uncovered in January 2017.
