25.01.2022 On Wednesday 31st March, Year 10 and 11 students attended the RAC bstreetsmart excursion at the RAC Arena. Part of the day featured a crash scene re-enactment attended by the emergency services, just as it would occur at a real crash site. The students also had the opportunity to listen to speakers who have been directly impacted by road trauma and talk with emergency services personnel. Two students gave their recount of the day: I'm a year 10 student which means that I'm ...able to get my driver's license. The RAC driving excursion was a really great way of informing me that accidents can happen to anyone. All those real-life experiences that we were told about was interesting and informative. It made me more aware of road safety Sofiia Seebaluck. I am currently a year 11 student at Lakeland Senior High School. Our school saw the RAC Bstreetsmart presentation yesterday and I personally felt it was an emotional and effective performance. I feel as if many students could take a lot of valuable lessons from visiting this particular event, of how to become a more cautious and conscientious driver. The presentation brought raw material, giving a very real perspective of how important road safety is and how it affects those closest to us. I strongly believe this is very important for young adults to witness, especially those who are about to get their license. It shows the detrimental effects of being safe not only for yourself, but for the sake of others. They did this through many re-enactments and guest speakers that gave a very moving performance, showing what can happen in a crash and the lasting consequences Tammy Cleary

12.01.2022 INDIGENOUS SERVICEPEOPLE COMMEMORATED Grass trees have been planted at Lakeland Senior High School to honour the 13 Indigenous WA servicepeople who fought ...at Gallipoli. A 14th tree was also planted to represent unknown Indigenous servicepeople. Kalyakoorl Ngoorndiny Boodjar Noongar for forever sleeping or resting in country is thought to be the first commemorative garden of its type in Australia. Descendants, the local RSL, current indigenous servicepeople and more came together on Monday to officially open the garden. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Veterans and Services Association of WA president Dianne Ryder said it was a wonderful thing to see. "A lot of [the soldiers] would have lost heart, because they fought alongside like their brothers, as far as fighting alongside each other, their comrades, that sort of stuff, and to come home and not be accepted would have been a huge thing," she said. "All that time they spent fighting for Australia, then came back and it didn’t seem to mean anything. "This is about reconciliation, this is huge about acknowledgement, and it’s huge about acknowledging the commitment of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander veterans." Jessica Warriner / ABC News.

Edith Dircksey Cowan OBE (née Brown; 2 August 1861 9 June 1932) was an Australian social reformer who worked for the rights and welfare of women and children. She is best known as the first Australian woman to serve as a member of parliament. Best department - Women in history are the winners. Our female colleagues have clearly demonstrated that women have had a very successful and often unrecognised role in history when compared to men. 02.01.2022 NOVA On Wednesday 18th November, almost 40 girls across year 7, 8 and 9 NOVA and year 10 pre-ATAR had the opportunity to engage with a challenging and thought-provoking workshop presented by Young Change Agents. Throughout the day, students worked in teams to investigate issues they faced within their community. Focusing on one issue, students developed a theoretical program/company, created a slogan and logo and began to build a web page. ... Students were put through a rigorous process which stretched their imaginations to invent new, never-thought-of-before ideas to address their community issue. One such activity challenged each group to list 100 ideas to tackle their issue in under five minutes! Students then chose one idea and had an hour to create a presentation to showcase their business, mission and solution which they then pitched to the teachers. Students showed incredible resilience throughout the day whilst displaying teamwork skills, pushing their creative thinking and stepping out of their comfort zones. It was remarkable to watch the process unfold and we, as a school, are so fortunate to have had the opportunity to participate. A big thank you to Young Change Agents for awarding us with the event, to Miss Valentine for supporting the girls throughout the day and to Schools Plus for funding a special lunch for the participants. After all they persevered through, they truly deserved it! Mrs Matthews NOVA Academic Coordinator
