25.01.2022 Our Mental Health Advocacy Program (MHAP) Team challenged our Senior Students to present their take on the R U OK? Day message of There’s more to say after are you OK?. They also did a lot of work through the week to build awareness of the R U OK? campaign and raised funds for the organisation’s important work by holding a BBQ. The team are looking forward to judging the entries from our Tutor Groups and awarding a prize to the most deserving group! This student-led initiative has been well supported and well led by our very capable Year 9 and 10 MHAP students.

23.01.2022 We have celebrated our Year 6 Class of 2020 with a Valedictory Chapel and our Year 6 Social themed 'The Stars of 2020'. It was an unusual year to be a Year 6 student and we have enjoyed being able to celebrate reaching the end of primary school with our students. 'Rest up' Year 6, as was encouraged by Chaplain Pete during chapel, as some big things await you in 2021.

22.01.2022 Our Year 10 students were involved in a combined History\PDHPE fun day that focused on team based activities that tested their sporting prowess, collaboration, creativity and research skills. The sportsmanship, team work and competitive spirit of our students shone through on the day, as they enjoyed working through various challenges in a bid to sprint to the finish line to claim the winner’s prize! It was a close battle for points throughout the day, but team ‘Bondi Rescue’ triumphed to take out first place overall.

22.01.2022 In the words of our Principal Mr Michael Hannah "Your children - our students - are at the heart of why we do what we do; we are partners in nurturing our young people to become the best people they can be". By providing opportunities for our students to grow and flourish we are building better futures. Here is an insight of what we will be sharing with our school community today.

21.01.2022 Last night we had the opportunity to showcase our Senior School to current and prospective families for Year 7 2022. It was an amazing evening with food prepared and served by our students, live music, a live art session, a STEM interactive area and student works on display. One big highlight of the night was the number of students willing to be involved in our student led tours - proudly showing our families and visitors around their school. Our student body shone bright last night!

20.01.2022 The Board of the 'SchoolAid' charity have endorsed Lakes Grammar for National School Accreditation for Empowering Young Philanthropists. This reflects a number of initiatives that our children are involved in such as Kids For a Cause Charity work, fundraising for different national disasters, Samaritans and the like, and the way in which students engage in school and community service activities, particularly through the Ulimiliko program in Years 5, 6 and onwards. The Board is very impressed with our focus on encouraging students to undertake campaigns and fundraising events to support others in need. They also recognise our positive and proactive approach to empowering young philanthropists.

19.01.2022 The students in Year 7-10 History have engaged in inquiry-based learning this term to create various historical artefacts, time capsules and commemorative websites. As we could not host our annual 'Night at the Museum' to showcase the student projects, we are very proud to present our ‘Virtual Museum’. The students have produced some amazing projects that deserve to be shared with our school community so please click on the links below to view the projects of each year group... and enjoy the fantastic array of student works! 19.01.2022 Our Talented Athlete Program has commenced and the group have been put through their paces at the gym today in a fitness profiling session with personal Trainer Shane Forbes. They also heard from 14 times Australian Surfing Champion Sandra English about what it takes to be successful. Beforehand they spent time goal setting and establishing what motivates them in their chosen sports. This is a really exciting program for our senior students.

18.01.2022 The last few days have been marked with some special moments as we said farewell to our Class of 2020 - from a time capsule which captures all that was 2020 to the traditional Year 12 breakfast organised by the upcoming Year 12 cohort. Today was capped off by a very touching Farewell Chapel and a departing gift of 'study beans' which were personally crafted by Teachers and staff. Year 12, you leave today with the blessing of your entire school community and may you remember your last week with fondness.

17.01.2022 This term, our Year 5/6 Opportunity Class students were joined by other students from Year 5 and 6 classes to work on a term-long project. They each chose a person who had inspired them and who had changed the world for good. Their task was to research them and ultimately become them. Students learned about their person through the lenses of Maths, Science, Geography and History. They did a variety of artworks and wrote a wide variety of texts. Their hard work culminated yesterday in a 'Day of Eminence' where they took us on a journey through time and place. Characters such as Plato, Joan of Arc, Leonardo da Vinci, Princess Diana, Donald Bradman and Hedy Lamarr were in the spotlight as our students educated and inspired us with detailed displays and dynamic speeches. Well done to our very talented students. This is learning at its best!

17.01.2022 We would like to congratulate our Year 12 Major Work students in Extension 2 English, Design and Technology, Music, Drama and Visual Arts. Constructing a major work is always a stressful thing and this year has been no ordinary year and it has definitely had its added challenges! This year, across the subjects, there have been many concepts explored and brought to life through various mediums. Mediums created and used have included performance, video making, sculptures, drawi...ngs, critical essays, program design, wood working, textiles, photography and illustrations. Various concepts have been explored including the effects of trauma on memory; are we ever original and the experience of theatre for the deaf community. In Design and Technology a student has created a design for a Lakes Learning Centre maybe one day we will see this come to fruition? We are so very proud of these students! We wish them all the best with the HSC marking process! We hope you enjoy some photos of some of the works across the subjects! See more

15.01.2022 Our Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme 2020 involved 24 students from Years 9-11. This is the biggest cohort the school has had in over 10 years. It was rewarding to see this group persevere through COVID-19 challenges. Many students had to swap or innovate their original plan due to the epidemic. This photo gallery is from the expedition held last week which took the students on a pack and paddle journey through Berowra National Park. It was wonderful to get these students back into the wild when so much time was spent inside throughout 2020. Congratulations to all of our Dukes!

15.01.2022 Today we had our first ever student-led lunchtime concert performed by our elective music students and what a fantastic vibe it was! It was so good to hear live music again after almost twelve months since this was possible. Congratulations to the students involved and to Mrs Rabbetts for her amazing support.

15.01.2022 We are currently hosting Focus Days in our Senior School which involve each faculty holding special events over the last few weeks of term that are fun, interactive and engaging for our students. You will see more of this in the coming weeks but there is no denying the level of engagement as our Year 7 students enjoyed a day immersed in the Creative Arts. From considering the role of human expression and movement in drama, to making their own musical instruments in Music to... experimenting with waterbombs and colour in Visual Arts! It was a great day and a wonderful experience for our students. We thank our talented CAPA Faculty Team for providing this Festival of the Arts Day for our ever enthusiastic Year 7 students. We would also like to acknowledged these fabulous photos from the day were captured by Year 7 student Alie who is clearly a talented budding photographer.

13.01.2022 Our Focus Days have continued in the Senior School and our students are still well and truly engaged in their learning. Last week Year 9 Commerce students participated in a teleconference call with talented Google employees who enlightened our students about the world of coding, technology, and the future of employment. The students also spoke with the founder of Hello Cars and Loop-it, to learn some valuable tips and tricks on how to go about planning their first major purch...ase a car! They have also focused on resume writing and mock job interviews. Students worked in groups to design and pitch their very own board games to a group of ‘Sharks’ or potential investors. Year 9 also participated in a sustainability focused day, as we have spent this semester exploring some of the geographical issues surrounding food. Session 1 explored Food Wastage through the documentary War on Waste. Session 2 saw students audit food waste from the school (in a covid safe way) to calculate how much rubbish is produced in a single recess and then to categorise the waste. Session 3 saw students in small groups work on proposals and solutions to solve a self-selected problem related to Food Waste. Some groups focused on enhancing the sustainability of our school, others worked to develop video and social media campaigns to raise awareness of issues of food wastage and the benefits of recycling and composting. There is nothing better than seeing students engaged in their learning.

06.01.2022 Yesterday, our Year 5 and 56OC classes took a trip back to the 1850s, participating in an action-packed Colonial Day! They made (and ate) damper, set up tents the old-fashioned way with canvas and sticks, painted boomerangs and participated in some fun colonial games. A highlight of the day was the market stalls, where students bought and sold a variety of merchandise they had specially created for the day, using the money they had each earned in the previous term, through our Gold Game. Well done to all our students for their great outfits and the wonderful spirit of collaboration we saw throughout the day!

06.01.2022 This morning a very special meeting happened between a small group of our students and His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and Her Excellency Mrs Hurley. It was a proud moment for Mr Hannah and Mr Wallace to join our students in presenting their amazing philanthropist work which included: - Mekenzie Jones from Year 6 for her work attending nursing homes over Easter with cards and gifts for those u...nable to see their family due to the impact of Coronavirus - Montana McGarrity from Year 4 for her fundraising efforts for the Australia Koala Foundation and visiting the local hospital to recognise and thank nurses on International Nurses Day during COVID-19. - Callum Lightfoot from Year 4 for collecting soap and towels for the homeless which were then donated to Coast shelter. - Christopher and Ashley Webb from Year 5 and Year 3 for their fundraising efforts for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter. - Ella Turner from Year 3 for the work she has undertaken sewing blankets for homeless using donated old jeans to support them during winter. - Abigail Brown from Year 6 for her support of The Heart Foundations 'Jump Rope for Heart'. This work supports our recent accreditation into the School Aid program and our 'Kids For a Cause' initiative. Stories were exchanged and both special guests were delighted to see the work our students have undertaken. His Excellency encouraged our students to have 'big hearts and to think outside themselves'. This is such a powerful message and we have no doubt this will have a lasting impact. Her Excellency sang a beautiful song to our students that she had written during COVID-19 encouraging them to 'Be the Sunshine'. It certainly was a very memorable moment for all involved and we congratulate our students

05.01.2022 At Lakes Grammar we are equipping our students to build better futures for themselves and for the communities in which they will live and work after school. The young people in this Futures Magazine graduated from Lakes Grammar in 2020. Some had been with us since Kindergarten and many joined us over the following years. No matter how long they had been our students, we considered every one of them to be part of our family. You will see that our graduates are embarking on ...a very wide range of exciting careers. Many have begun university studies, while others have gained apprenticeships or entered the workforce in other ways. Whatever they are doing, we are proud of them and are grateful that we had the privilege of working in partnership with their parents to nurture the wonderful young adults they are today. We look forward to hearing of the better futures they will build for themselves and for others.

05.01.2022 Today we officially said farewell to our Class of 2020, also fondly referred to as Class of COVID. As they left our school gates for one last time they took with them the blessings and best wishes of their school community. Congratulations Class of 2020.

We hope you enjoy this video with samples of work where students have explored big questions about our world, or have creatively applied the knowledge and skills they have learnt in class to a new context. Where will our deep learning and our learning powered approach take our students next...?

01.01.2022 While R U OK? Day has led to important breakthroughs for many people, too many people nod and say, yep I’m OK, when they’re not. And what do we do when someone responds with Actually, no. I’m not OK at all? The official R U OK? Day site says, ‘R U OK? Day is our national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone to ask Are you OK?’ But what matters most in that sentence is not the question. It’s the word action. Here are some tips from Stacey, our Junior School Ps...ychologist which apply to children of all ages: Tip 1: Just like dollars are the currency of our economy, attention is the currency of our relationships. Spending time in the relationship is critical for our children to be willing to talk with us, trust us, and disclose their struggles to us. To a child LOVE is spelled T-I-M-E. Tip 2: If you sense they’re not OK, tell them that. Be up front. There’s an old saying that if you can name it, you can tame it. What we’re trying to do with those we love is to put a name to the emotion that might be dragging them down. When we do that, they feel understood. Tip 3: Don’t try to always fix things. You sometimes can’t. Instead, name the emotion and then sit with them in their struggle. Let them open up. Listen. That’s it. If someone is not OK, we can’t fix them. But we can suffer with them. We can see they’re struggling and step into that struggle with them. That’s true compassion. And that’s how we truly help. Tip 4: Tell them you love them. No Matter What. Reassurance that they are valued and loved is key. The added confirmation that they matter to you no matter what can be pricelessly affirming.
