24.01.2022 Velona Cuddlies are the best Eco-friendly disposable nappies that I have come across so far. Nappies are just like cleaning products..they are not industry regulated. This means they are not required to disclose the products used to make them. Some nappies can contain lots of nasties, not only for bub but for the planet (chlorine, perfumes, phthalate, preservatives, PVC, dyes etc) As a new parent I'm testing out all option and brands, both disposable and re-usable. I find thi...s brand to be super soft and effective. 100% chemical free. Non irritating. Biodegradable. Hypoallergenic. Natural. Zero toxins. 22.01.2022 Unless there is an increased risk of SIDS, baby monitors should be avoided. Developing baby brains don't need to be exposed to high levels of radiofrequency radiation for 10 hours a night. If they have bidorectional communication, both ends of the baby monitor are emitting microwave radiation, so you and your baby are being exposed. RF exposure can impact the immune system, reproductive system, brain development & sleep cycle disruption. ... Some monitors can be hard wired with an ethernet cable...a much safer option, or you could choose a low emission analogue baby monitor. #babymonitor #radiofrequency #no5 #stop5G #radiation #myths #healthy #homes #nursary #sleeping #babys #emr #childprotection #earthmumma #microwaveradiation #safetechnology #5gmythbusters #ethernet #wifi #bluetooth
22.01.2022 Now the weather is starting to heat up, it's time to hit the beach...but what do you choose to slather yourself in? Chemical Sunscreen or Physical Sunscreen? I personally love Aussie made @little.urchin with SPF 30 (suitable for babies >6 months). It is estimated that 16,221 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in Australia in 2020. So let's get serious about the slip, slop, slap Here are your options: Chemical sunscreens are absorbed into he skin. They work by absor...bing the UV rays and turning them into energy (light or heat) before they can harm the skin. Physical/mineral sunscreens sit on top of the skin forming a light reflecting barrier. The health concerns around a lot of chemical sunscreen ingredients is that they may cause: - Skin allergies. - Not protect you against both UVA and UVB rays. - Are hormone disrupting chemicals. - Can damage the skin and even increase the risk of skin cancers. The FDA have found that chemicals from sunscreen have been systemically absorbed even after a single use and still found on the skin & in the blood weeks after application. The chemicals are also showing up in breast milk & urine samples. The two most common ingredients in physical sunscreens are Zinc Oxide & Titanium Dioxide. These are the healthier options. However avoid Zinc Oxide with nano size particles(<100 nanometres) as some studies have suggested that they can be harmful to living cells and organs if they penetrate the skin, and have the potential to cross the placenta & blood brain barrier. Some manufacturers use nano size minerals to reduce the white chalky appearance of sunscreen. These sized minerals are more affected by UV rays & could lead to free radical damage to the surrounding skin. The larger the particles, the greater the UVA protection, so stick to Zinc Oxide (non nano).

20.01.2022 https://youtu.be/ICEGN6tJTz0 Cork is an amazing natural and renewable material. It acquired by stripping the outer bark from the cork oak tree (Quercus Suber) so they are never cut down. Cork oak forests (majority grown in Portugal) can trap 5 million tons of CO2 every year and the trees live for 200 years or more. WOW! It is biodegradable and fully recyclable. Now that's what we need to put under our feet! - Hypoallergenic (great for asthma sufferers) - Durable... - Sustainable - Soft under foot - Easy to clean - Retains heat for warmth in winter - Sound dampening/acoustically insulating - Naturally anti-microbial See more
20.01.2022 VOCs...you can't see them...but you can smell them! They are chemicals that evaporate at normal room temperature & can affect the indoor air quality of your home. There are thousands of VOCs but not all of them are dangerous. Their health effects can depend on the concentration & length of exposure. VOCs may cause: - Asthma... - Headaches - Eye, nose & throat irritation - Nausea - Dizziness - Skin rashes - Damage to liver, kidneys & nervous system. - Upper respiratory cancers (just to name a few) If you're sensitive to the "new paint smell" avoid enamel paints & look for water-based acrylic paints (or lime or clay). Consider these paints for your next home renovation: - Ecostyle By Rockcote - @ecolourpaint (#byronbay) - Pure Performance @taubmans - Resene's Zylone Sheen @resenecolour - Volvox Clay Paint - @porterspaints - Biopaints - Keim Mineral Paints - @livosaustralia - Oikos I chose to use @rockcote Ecostyle recently (low #VOCs ) Davids Discount Paints Miami colour matched Dulux Casper White Quarter at my request. Limited smell & no headaches! Highly recommend AGF Painting for a professional job! Tip 1: Always ventilate as much as possible. 18.01.2022 #Repost @dailyom (@get_repost) Throughout our lives, most of us are led to believe that relaxation is best pursued outside of the home. As a result, we spend months anticipating weeklong vacations, seldom fully appreciating the leisure time we are blessed with on a more regular basis. It is possible, however, to reexperience the same utterly relaxed state you slip into while on holiday within your homes walls. The feelings of serenity you enjoy during a vacation are a product of your outlook rather than your locale. You give yourself permission to enjoy yourself and unwind while on vacation. Granting yourself the same privilege while at home allows you to experience complete relaxation, even when surrounded by routine. 16.01.2022 This is me holding a baby alpaca in Peru. They are an ecosystem friendly animal that can help sustain and regenerate the environment. But have you ever thought about putting alpaca carpet in your home? Building Biologists do not recommend carpet in a healthy home as they collect dust mites, pet dander and other allergens. If shoes are worn inside the home, then pesticides, dirt and other contaminants are traipsed inside and get stuck in the carpet. Most likely they have be...en treated with hazardous chemical sprays & installed with nasty adhesives. With that being said some people just love the softness and luxury of carpet, especially in bedrooms to help achieve a warm homely feel. If you choose to go down this route, then often people will turn to wool as they believe it is a much more natural choice instead of dyed nylon carpets. Although wool is a better choice, wool still needs to be stripped of lanolin which involves chemicals in order to do this. Alpaca is a healthier option that avoids the harsh dying and chemical treatment processes. Alpaca fleece is an exotic fibre that is natural and soft with excellent thermal, acoustic and anti-static properties. The backing of carpet is just as important as the carpet itself. A bonded backing is a "greener" & healthier choice as there are no glues used. So are there any disadvantages of having alpha carpet? Yes, excess fibres may shed over time & yes there's more expense involved...but I believe health is worth investing in.

12.01.2022 Colour is strongly associated with emotions. Are you... Feeling washed out? Feeling off colour? ... Seeing Red? Feeling Blue? Green with envy? Purple with rage? A yellow-bellied coward? (hopefully not lol) Colour associations may have more truth than we realize. We make intuitive connections between feelings and colours all the time. Today it's time to check yourself and check your colours. What do you choose to dress yourself in? Paint your walls with? What cup do you drink from? What makeup do you wear? What colours surround you every day and how do they affect your mood? I hope today and tomorrow you choose to be bright and beautiful or more importantly use colour to truely represent who you are. #colourtherapy #interiordesign #colouryourworld #lakula #happy #paint #house #homes

Thanks to my beautiful friend @carlyjdwyer I discovered these lovely products that are safe to use during pregnancy and whilst breast feeding. I have been using the face and body exfoliant and the face and body cream. I have always loved an exfoliant where you can feel the granuals. It feels li...ke it is actually brushing away the dead skin cells. The exfoliant contains pure organic aloe vera, ylang ylang, geranium, and is free of SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), formalin and fragrance. I love the face and body cream as it is rich and nourishing for my skin. It contains pure organic aloe vera, sweet almond oil, bees wax, coconut oil, vit E, and B5, French lavender and chamomile. I feel instantly calm and relaxed when I open the lid. They are amazing Aloe Vera products and I would recommend them to anyone. I love that their product and business values align with mine. 09.01.2022 Water quality is so important to our #health. After chemicals are added to our water supply to 'purify' the water, there are hundreds of kilometers of pipes through which the water must travel. This Ultimately affects the water quality coming out of our taps. There are many factors to consider when installing a #water filter in your #home. ... A #buildingbiologist can make recommendations on a suitable water filter depending on your needs and budget. We may ask you What is the source of your drinking water? ie. tank, tap, bore/well. What contaminants are you wanting to remove? Are you renting or do you own your own home? How much bench space or under sink space have you got? What is the water pressure like in your home? Thanks to Eco Plumbing Professionals who services the Northern NSW region, I was able to install a #Raymor Single Undersink Water #Filter. It can be purchased through #tradelink for $206.43. It has a carbon, taste and odour cartridge that can effectively remove sediment, petrochemicals, pesticides, chlorine and its carcinogenic by-products (trihalomethanes). The filter efficiency at removing contaminants will depend on their micron size (0.5, 1, 5, 10). The smaller the better! This filter does NOT remove #bacteria, viruses, #cryptosporidium, #giardia, heavy metals (lead, copper) or #fluoride. Ideally replace the cartridge every 6 months as bacteria can grow on the filter media. www.ecoplumbingprofessionals.com.au #buildingbiology #healthyhomes #lakula #waterpollution #waterfilter @ Kingscliff, New South Wales

05.01.2022 There are so many decisions to make when building and renovating..but here are 7 properties to look for when selecting a good building material. 1. They should not affect the occupant's health. 2. They should not contribute to poor indoor air quality. 3. They should not contribute to environmental waste.... 4. They should have low embodied energy and be recyclable. 5. They should have hygroscopic properties (ability to absorb and release moisture from the air). This regulates humidity. 6. Should be a "warm" material so the surface temp is as close to room air temp (avoids condensation). 7. Should not be radioactive but should be electrically neutral. 05.01.2022 Spring has sprung. What a stunning time of the year! It is also a good reminder to do a spring clean in our homes. When was the last time you checked/cleaned/replaced the HEPA (High efficiency particulate air) filter in your vacuum? If this is not in tip top shape you may as well forget about it. A clogged filter will not be effective in picking up in-home pollutants such as pet dander, pollen and dust and may even damage the machine. ... Once you have done this, when you jump out of bed first thing in the morning (because that's what you do in spring ) strip the bed and vacuum the mattress. Your body heat brings the dust mites to the surface, so it's the perfect time to help tackle these critters. Many Aussies are allergic to the protein in dust mite faeces. Everybody sheds enough dead skin cells in a day to feed around 1 million house dust mites! YUCK. Then wash your bedding in hot water >60C. Also vital if you are a sweaty Betty If it is manageable, take pillows and mattresses outside to be aired in the sun. 04.01.2022 It was early 2019 when I decided to undertake an Advanced Diploma in Building Biology through the Australian College of Environmental Studies. Building Biology is a science that investigates the health hazards in the built environment. A Building Biologists role is to identify, test & provide recommendations on how to mitigate these hazards. Having completed a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science in 2009 and also a Diploma in Interior Design, I felt this new career would no...t only be rewarding, but allow me to follow my love and passion for homes and health all in one. Australians spend at least 90% of their time indoors, which is why it is so important to recognise that our work and home environment plays a huge role in our health and wellbeing. We offer a range of residential and commercial auditing/consultations including: - Mould & water damage - IAQ (Indoor air quality) - EMF (electromagnetic fields) - Water Pollution - Building design & materials - Pre-purchase/pre-lease inspections just to name a few. Although the Building Biology industry began in Germany in the 1970s, it is an up and coming industry in Australia that I am very excited to be a part of. I hope to empower you to make healthy & informed decisions about your environmental health. You can follow my Facebook & Instagram page Lakula Environmental Health Thank you to Nicole Bijlsma & the Australian College of Environmental Studies for guiding me on this rewarding path. #buildingbiology #lakula #australiancollegeofenvironmentalstudies #colebijlsma

What causes moisture? - Rising damp from inadequate drainage or flooding. - High humidity levels esp. in tropical climates. - Condensation build up from poor ventilation. - Moisture/water ingress from a lack of vapour barriers used in the building (sarking, waterproofing etc.). - Plumbing issues inc. hidden leaks in walls. - Faulty gutters. - Topography of the land with a slope towards the building which causes water to accumulate around the building.
