22.01.2022 First ray of sunshine on the aspens. Early winter.

20.01.2022 Glorious luculia, in full bloom now. We have about 20 bushes, many of which I grew from cuttings! Their scent is amazing and I love to use them in bouquets and vase arrangements. Also a photo of a young vireya tuba, also in full bloom in a tucked away corner of the woodland gardens.

17.01.2022 Absolute full-on peak blooming of the old rhodos now at the gardens. Open garden Saturday and Sunday this coming weekend 10-4. They’re peaking early this year I think?

16.01.2022 Around the chapel today

15.01.2022 My email account has crashed so if you have sent me a message or request for information I can’t respond! Please feel free to message me via text or messenger. My phone number is 0458954175. These photos were taken yesterday around the chapel. Reminder: open garden dates for October are 10th (tomorrow) and Sunday 25th. No need to book but you will need to sign in on arrival

15.01.2022 The first bud opens on our big leaf rhodos! Actually there are only a handful with buds on this year, but they say patience is a virtue....our oldest plants have been in nearly 10 years! Theyre quite tall now, some down in the gully ar nearly 4m tall. We have many varieties sourced initially from Emu Valley rhododendron gardens and latterly from our friend Andrew at the fabulous Red Dragon nursery. Big leaf rhodos require protection from wind mainly, and we found ours did much better when they were put in drippers over the dry months. We have three walks that wind through them - the Vireya Trail, Big Leaf Walk and the Cliff Track.

15.01.2022 First day of winter

14.01.2022 Some of the things of interest around the gardens today.

14.01.2022 We are running an open garden day again this Sunday! To coincide with the azalea peak flowering ( a small window of flowering which doesn’t last long) Waratahs, vireyas, and some of the old rhododendrons. 10am to 4pm, entry fees apply. Also you’ll See the chapel dressed with flowers for the wedding last Tuesday. The gardens are wonderful from now to mid November. The November open dates are the 6th- 7th and the weekend of Longford Blooms (14th) when most of the big old rhodos will be blooming.

13.01.2022 The blooming season begins. Damage to the garden plants is very mild, considering the extent of damage in the woodland areas. Down in the main gardens the Christmas Cheer is in full bloom but we have lost a large bush in the row due to snow weight. Along the vireya trail and cliff track a few vireyas have snapped a branch but have survived remarkably well, and there is the odd flower with lots of buds. The big leaf rhodos are all in tact except one which has been broken by l...imbs falling from above, but it will be ok. The spring bulbs are growing and starting to do their thing and Im hopeful we will open for a day in September to celebrate. We are now 5 days into the clean up. Only the vireya trail is clear enough for us to walk through, although others have had the debris cut, just not cleared off the trail. Around the house and the chapel there is absolutely no sign of damage. We are blessed. See more

13.01.2022 Circumstances this year have caused us to change the opening hours this spring. We will open the gardens to the public for only a few days to coincide with peak flowering. The first open day will be on Sunday September 6 - peak flowering for the daffodils. Further open days in October and. November are to be advised, dependent on the unfolding seasonal flowering of the rhododendrons and azaleas - watch this space! Visits outside these specified open days are possible through private arrangement 0458954175. However, guests staying at the cottage will have access to the gardens for the duration of their stay. The pandemic and the unusual snow event have necessitated the changes for this year, and we look forward to seeing visitors on these open days.

13.01.2022 Please be advised I have withdrawn the previous post. I need to check with Tas government re opening our gardens again. I am unclear what our responsibilities are during this covid risk time. Hopefully the gardens will be available for recreation soon, but there will probably be necessary limiting of numbers, days and times. I apologise for any disappointment or inconvenience caused and I will keep you posted.

11.01.2022 Thank you to all who visited last Sunday, it was great to see so many of you enjoying the spring bulbs across the gardens. We have decided to open the gardens for another two weekends to make the spring flowering available to more people. The revised open garden dates for 2020 are: October 10th and 25th, November 7-8th, and 15th.

11.01.2022 Can anyone identify this critter, seen in our garden today?

11.01.2022 Around the house pond

10.01.2022 This is the exquisite Maurice Kupsch vireya. I am told its the only surviving one in the state. This species was named after the amazing rhododendron expert (same name obviously) who was a founding visionary of the much loved Emu Valley gardens. Maurice offered us valuable advice here at Lalla in the early days , planning the plant selections for the walks in Cadbys Gully - the vireya trail and Big Leaf walks so named for the rhododendron that thrive there now

10.01.2022 Sometimes it pays to look up! I bought this plant several years ago (can’t remember where) as had a tag r. Lindleyii - a species I had been hunting for ages (it’s a parent of the hybrid Kallista). I’ve waited years for it to flower- it’s a straggly tall plant and the blooms tower above me at around3 metres! But Red Dragon Nursey had a look at it and told me it’s definitely NOT Lindleyii Just as well it’s a big garden and can accommodate the also rans! Still a nice surprise to see the first of these giant maddeniis blooming for this season. Other Kallistas swelling up with nuttalliis ato follow.

09.01.2022 Have. you ever walked up to our lookout? Its about an hours slow ramble through woodland gardens, native eucalypt forest and rain forested streamsides, passing massed old rhododendrons along the way. The view is spectacular over looking the Pipers River Valley basin, and on a day like today you can see the ocean. I just love the mist in the valley in the early mornings.....

09.01.2022 Lawns mowed around the chapel before the rain, pretty as a picture.

09.01.2022 I have now been around most of the trails. The trails are all in the native forested areas or along the slopes of Cadbys gully. All are currently impassable but we have been cutting through the debris on the vireya trail and cliff track so hopefully well be able to open them again in spring. The trail from the chapel to the lookout will only take a day or so to clear but the loop around through the forest will be weeks of work, and there are several serious widow makers that... well have to get professionals to deal with. The bridges, chapel and other buildings are all completely fine but the deciduous azaleas shade house has collapsed. The waterfall is covered by fallen trees so a lot of work in that section.... As far as I can see ALL our big leaf rhodos have survived and only a couple have branches broken. The luculia are ok but a couple have had a significantl pruning. The vireyas seem remarkably unaffected. The daffodils will still bloom. Down in the main garden all the trees are fine and the old rhodos are great, with only a couple of branches broken. Due to the hazards, the forests and woodland gardens will remain closed until further notice. We hope theyll be ready in a few weeks. I am over the shock today (I was still reeling from the sheer scale of it yesterday when I spoke to the examiner) and feel positive that good things will come out of the landscape changes inflicted by the snow. There will be several garden plants and trees that will benefit from the increased light and pruning theyve received. We now have a unique opportunity to plant more native trees in the forested areas that ha ve been dominated by old wattles, which really needed to happen. Deeply grateful the damage can and will be healed in time. And blown away once again at the gentle way in which the forest trees have fallen amidst the garden plants and left them unharmed. Heartfelt thanks to you all for your supportive messages and patience as we work to restore the loveliness of our woodland wonderland. I promise to keep you posted. See more

07.01.2022 Thankyou to everyone who visited these gardens over the weekend.

07.01.2022 Just two weddings for spring 2020, both amazingly uniquely beautiful, but quite different. Now for a bit of a rest before we have our summer weddings, kicking off a busy year in 2021. Here are some photos of flowers for Saturdays event in and around the chapel

07.01.2022 Open gardens sat and Sunday 10-4. The largest, oldest massed rhododendrons in Australia are in FULL bloom right now

07.01.2022 Late afternoon sunset and shadows

07.01.2022 Our little boundary patrol and security officer Oscar. Devastated to report that he breathed his last today after 18 years of active service. Rest In Peace little champion, the morning walk around the gardens will never be the same.he was the BOSS

06.01.2022 Just a couple of beauties out at the moment. We will be open next Saturday - the Maddenii rhododendrons should be swinging - they're not extraordinary plants on the whole, but they have stunning blooms, and some are fragrant - mostly found along the trails. Also the Azaleas are swelling up so there should be a few blooming as well. The very biggest rhododendron is starting to bloom so it should have a bit of a show - it will be worth a visit if you're able to do a little walking. Im also hoping to dress the chapel up to show how it looks for a wedding. If you know someone looking for a gorgeous wedding setting, share this post with them! Hopefully see some of you then.

04.01.2022 First open day for this spring, this Sunday 6th September 10-5. We are only open to the public this year three times, once in September, October and November to coincide with peak flowering of various things.

04.01.2022 What a beautiful thing! I think this is simbu sunset (vireya)

03.01.2022 At the farm today. Day off rom the biggest clean up - but a walk along a couple of the trails today was encouraging. We will clear right back a few areas, burn the broken limbs and plant out with new gardens. Other really steep areas within the gully areas we are just cutting the broken pieces so they sit on the ground and will let the forest regenerate. We are concentrating our rehab efforts on one trail mainly to have it looking great for spring. Yesterday we cleared the fernery of debris and the ferns are already beginning to put out their new fronds. All is well. And I found time today to prepare a bouquet as well.

02.01.2022 I never thought Id be sharing this view of popular photo spots! While around the buildings all is well, there is absolute carnage along the trails as the wattle canopy and the understorey plants have collapsed under the weight of such heavy snow (for here). There will be days of clearing work ahead, and a full assessment of damage to plants will not be possible until the snow melts. It was quite scary last night as I could hear the constant crashing and smashing as the forest branches and trees crashed in the gully. At least the road is clear again, and the big old rhodos have coped ok.

02.01.2022 Think you know about the birds and the bees? Listen to spring here at the gardens today!

01.01.2022 Last weeks of autumn glory. Lalla Flower Farm- all walks will be open this weekend! Saturday 16 May from 10am - 3pm Sunday 17 May 12 - 4pm.... Limited numbers so please phone or message to book your arrival time. 0458954175 Current social distancing regulations apply: * Available to residents within 30km radius (Launceston). * No toilet facilities available until further notice. * No seating in the chapel available. * Groups of no more than two, or more if from the same household. * 1.5m distance between people.

01.01.2022 Its late winter, and the blooming has begun, with the daffodils now in serious flush. Early rhododendrons across the gardens are also underway, with the full flush of flowers coming in October November. Still mountains of work to be done to get the trails ready for opening, and also we have begun the clean up in the main garden which was knocked about more than I initially thought. The main problem being the shade house which has to be dismantled, as its collapsed on one side, and the azaleas are getting organised for their special blooming in October. Its a huge job, and I dont know how to do it. Our wonderful local builders are just too busy at the moment so Im hoping someone with the right skills might put their hand up to assist me. Meanwhile, yesterday was a magic morning to be enjoying the final sights of winter around the lake.
