06.01.2022 Last night's super moon was visible on the Lancelin sand dunes in Western Australia. Lara Scaddan and her grey mare Cognac were positioned on top of a dune as t...he moon rose. I have envisaged for a couple of years. So how is it done? First up, a full moon is required, so that limits the number of possible nights a year to just 13. That night needs to be on a weekend or in school holidays so I'm there at my holiday home. A horse and rider have to be available and willing to head out to the dunes at sunset. A long lens is essential as I needed the moon to be quite large in the frame. Thank you to Canon Australia for lending me an 800mm lens which I attached to a 1.4xs converter (allowing me to shoot at 1120mm focal length) on a Canon 1DX. I needed two flashes left and right of the horse and someone to tend them; Tonya did a superb job. The flash transmitter on the camera had to work from 250m away which meant I had to use Profoto B1 heads. Using such a long (and very heavy) lens meant a solid tripod was essential and it and the camera had to be moved 20m closer to the subject every 3 minutes as the moon rises quickly and I needed to keep horse and rider in the moon. We were out there for a couple of hours, hours that have paid dividends. Please share this pic on your page so your friends understand how special Lancelin.
