25.01.2022 Come and join us again this coming Saturday 24 April from 9-11am: pull out a few weeds and enjoy a cuppa in good company. This is the first time we'll be meetin...g without the redoubtable Bob Dowd (on the left in the photo below), who will be sorely missed as he makes the move to warmer and possibly sunnier climes. 25.01.2022 Good afternoon all The Greater Bank Planting Project stage 1 will be held next Friday 4th December at Blackbutt reserve from 9am. I am aware that our much valued Volunteer army has missed out on getting their hands dirty throughout the year due to COVID so I would like to welcome all volunteers to come together (in a safe distancing way of course) and help out The Greater Bank and plant a tree or 2, there are 2500 plants to go in so there should be plenty to go around. We do ...request that if you are interested in coming on the day, to please let us know beforehand for contract tracing purposes. If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me directly. Thanks Jade [email protected]

23.01.2022 Did you know that cicadas are the loudest insects in the world? Some large species, such as the Greengrocer/Yellow Monday and the Double Drummer, produce a nois...e intensity in excess of 120 dB at close range (this is approaching the pain threshold of the human ear). The cicada's song is a mating call produced by the males only. Each species has its own distinctive call and only attracts females of its own kind. Cicadas are the only insects to have developed such an effective and specialised means of producing sound. One of our members patiently waited to capture these images of a young cicada emerging from its chrysalis in the Minuma Range of Deua National Park (B Ridgway). 22.01.2022 EARLY BIRD TICKETS ENDS MAY 1 The 2021 National Landcare Conference includes the Landcare Farming Panel discussion which features Lucinda Corrigan, Cameron N...icholson, Colin Seis, Alastair Rayner and Dr Shane Norrish on the topic of Landcare and farming. Landcare’s roots are firmly in the rural heartland of Australia. It is one of the few movements that bridges agricultural production and conservation of natural assets. The Landcare model has been extremely successful, enabling farmers and other land managers to share experiences and learn from each other. Evolution of the model has seen farming systems, producer groups and consultant groups emerge to test ideas and share information. In recent times, regenerative agriculture has also emerged as an area of significant interest for some agricultural producers . This panel will discuss Landcare’s current connection to the agricultural sector, challenges for clear messaging for farmers, facilitators and advisors, and how Landcare can most effectively support farmers and agricultural organisations to validate ideas and share reliable information. Register to attend the conference in person or as an online delegate. http://nationallandcareconference.org.au/

19.01.2022 This is an amazing area that we've started to help regenerate. There is a dense grove of Native Rosella (Hibiscus heterophyllus), Poison Peach (Trema tomentosa,... Maiden's Wattle (Acacia maidenii) among others. We've been working through it gradually removing the Lantana that has been growing amongst it all. The result is this beautiful regenerating rainforest. Pictured are the volunteers at work. See more

09.01.2022 When you’re out fishing, there are a few simple things you can do to help protect some of the coast’s most precious birds.

09.01.2022 In August we asked Wollongong City Council to improve its draft climate change mitigation plan. In a shared campaign between the Wilderness Society Illawarra t...eam and a number of local environment groups a large number of submissions were made to council. The plan is set to resurface at the Council meeting on Monday 16 November so we will learn which of our changes have been adopted. More to come. See more

09.01.2022 From Kieran Tapsell "Members may be interested in downloading the Guide to the Banksia Bush Care site on the Stanwell Avenue Reserve, which consists of 4.5 hectares of bush on the shoreline of the middle headland of Stanwell Park. The Guide contains a short human and ecological history of Stanwell Park, and a detailed description of the rainforest and other trees that have regenerated on this central headland after it was denuded of practically all trees in the 1920s. It also... contains information on the trees that have been planted in the Reserve since the removal of lantana and other weeds started almost 50 years ago. The Guide is free, and I am following in the Stanwell Park tradition started by Lawrence Hargrave, who did not believe in patents or copyright. For him, knowledge was something that belonged to everyone. So, feel free to copy it, send it on to whomever you like, and to print it. The only restriction is the one in the Hargrave tradition - you are not to sell it, but you can give it away as often as you like. As I find out more about this interesting headland, I hope to provide further editions in the future with more information on things such as native grasses, shrubs and creepers. I am also keen to learn from others who have a much greater knowledge of botany than me, so if you see anything that you think needs correcting in the next edition, let me know. A big thanks to Kiara Mucci who designed the front cover and helped me make it available online." https://drive.google.com//1C5qZ1EgKMIrnzpRf0Wc6dWKwVQ/view See more

08.01.2022 Check http://blog.growingillawarranatives.org/ for local natives to plant

08.01.2022 Surprisingly, combatting climate change isn't as simple as just planting as many trees as possible. To replace forests you need to plant shrubs and ground covers and climbers... And if a region is naturally a savannah, leave it alone. What we need to do is stop clearing forests. One tree isn't the same as another, the trees planted should be native to the site. Instead of spending money planting Eucalypts in China (totally inappropriate) subsidise South American countries to stop clearing the Amazon rainforest. https://e360.yale.edu//are-huge-tree-planting-projects-mor

01.01.2022 Hello, I’m the Brush-tailed Possum that lives in your roof. I don't really want to, but the old trees that I used to live in have been cleared. Young trees don...'t have the hollows that I need, for nesting and raising my little family. I miss my Marri tree . The forests I evolved to live in are becoming fragmented. Everything is unfamiliar and frightening. When I go out looking for food or a mate, I have to navigate houses, roads, high fences and noisy backyards with dogs. Sometimes I find sanctuary in people's roof, shed or vegetable garden, which they don’t like . They get bad advice on social media and use rat baits or traps to try and relocate me. They don't realise that I'm not a pest, but protected native wildlife! It’s illegal to try to trap me to take me to an unfamiliar forest. The Possums there will fight with me and I may get hit by a car, or bitten by a dog, trying to get back home. Will you help me find a home at your place? I would much rather have a nest box in a big tree, than live in a roof. You can help me move out of your roof safely! 1. Put a Possum Box in a suitable shady tree, near a sturdy branch, at least 4m up 2. Add an apple, some fresh eucalyptus leaves and (if possible) some of my roof nest material, to the Possum Box - this will encourage me to investigate 3. Place a sensor light and cassia chips in your roof space, to encourage me to leave (please don’t use moth balls or baits!) 4. Wait for me to find the Possum Box and move in 5. Once I am out of the roof, you can seal the access points and trim the branches I may have been using to get into the roof You can also help me by keeping your pets restrained avoiding poisons and pesticides using wildlife-friendly netting on your fruit trees driving carefully at night Please help us . We belong here too. and text: Kanyana Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre #possum #brushtailedpossum #nestboxes #wildliferehabilition #wildlifeconservation #habitatloss #nesthollows #rewilding #kanyanawildlife
