25.01.2022 For todays Landsborough SS photo we head back 22 years ago to 1998 and a more informal setting.

25.01.2022 Landsborough SS - the class of 1972. Back Row: Teacher L. Plowman, Ian Hodgetts, Joe Molan, Lyn Johnson, Louise Molan, Marg Sandlant, Sandra Sandlant, Pam Perry (Teacher) - she was a student back in 1958!! 2nd Row: Stephen O'Callaghan, Robert Hodgetts, Bernard Molan, Andrew Murphy, Stephen Amarant, Vince O'Callaghan, David Turner, Rowan Work... 24.01.2022 Hope you all enjoyed the Landsborough Football club article in the latest "Landsborough & District News". Thanks very much to Terri, Leonie and all the team who managed to get the latest issue out despite some major setbacks. The community will always appreciate your efforts. As it has been exactly 100 years since the first of the Landsborough premiership sides saluted, time to remember these local legends of 1920. The description of the grand final, where they took on the mi...ght of Joel, makes fascinating reading - it must have been a day to remember, if somewhat controversial!! "The 1920 flag was not without controversy, with minor premier Landsborough losing the grand final against Joel, but under league rules could challenge for a rematch which they controversially won by one point. During this match, feelings ran high and from the commencement of the game a howling mob of men, women and children over-ran the playing arena, making it impossible at times to distinguish the players. 90% of the onlookers left the ground in the belief the match had ended in a draw, but owing to the state of affairs it was impossible to check scores, but it appears that the Landsborough goal umpire discovered they had won by a point. After 6 further weeks of protests and deliberations the result stood, despite a certified goal umpires tally from the Joel umpire and sworn testimony from the timekeepers that the game had ended in a draw (Stawell Times-News, as referred to in History of Navarre Football-Netball Club 1911-2011, Louise Bibby). 1920 Premiership Team Back: Bill Ord (Cut off), Bill Leslie (with hat), George Aston, Bob Leslie, Ralph Aston, Fred Friend, Bill Work (with hat), Wally Petch, Harry Freeman, Charlie Peacock, Laurie Blake, Jim Hanley, Clancy Work, Ned Perry, Cedric Blake, Pat Lennon Front: Bill Crawford, Dick Blake, Billy Ffrench, Tom Hogan, Danny Oates

23.01.2022 Due to the immense popularity of the railway book, we will pop in from time to time with fresh photos of the days the railway line plied through our valley from Crowlands up through Joel, Landsborough West and onto Tulkara and Navarre. Todays photo: It is January 1931, and if your fronted up at Navarre to catch the train you would buy a ticket off the guard-in-charge Frank Woodford and board your old "ABC" carriage, at the rear of a long rake of goods wagons, hauled by an old... steam locomotive - no airconditioning on this hot summers day, but as the carriage came complete with observation platform at the back it had its own natural ventilation. Plenty of time to stand there and watch the countryside slowly roll by, waving to the local farmers and their families as the train wound its way southwards. You probably wouldnt have had too much on-board company other than the guard, and the train would trundle along at a leisurely pace, stopping for a while at Tulkara while some more wagons and shunting took place, and repeat the exercise again at Landsborough West, which would give you ample time to take a stroll if needed as well during the 20 minute stop. The scene at the next station - Joel - down in the Wimmera River flats, is shown here in this old photo. To the right of the photo are the sawmills that provided the railways its main source of income, whilst the lady caretaker Mrs Mackaville looks on as the train begins more shunting. You still had another couple of hours before reaching the "big smoke" at Ararat. They were leisurely days, and no-one was in a hurry. The same scene in 2019 - a road now runs where the Joel railway yard once stood, the mound where the platform was is on the left, with the crossroad ahead including the Shays Flat gravel road on the left and the road to Stawell on the right with the Frampton farm in the background.

22.01.2022 Unfortunately, in the light of yesterdays announcement from the Premier and Chief Health Officer, regarding tightening of CoVid19 restrictions (in terms of the numbers permitted at indoor public gatherings) our AGM/Monthly meeting scheduled for tomorrow (Monday 22nd) at the Barkly Room has been cancelled. At this stage it is proposed for this meeting to now take place on Monday 3rd August, but only subject to a further loosening of CoVid19 restrictions. We will keep all members informed. In todays world things can change quickly. Apologies to all for the late notice, but hopefully we will all catch up again soon. Regards - The Committee Landsborough & District Historical Group.

22.01.2022 In 1977 the Landsborough state school celebrated its 100th anniversary. The occasion was marked with a special cake, and the youngest student of the school and the oldest living student came together to share the moment. The youngest student at the time was 5 year old Peter Browne, 5th generation descendant of John & Winifred who settled in the Malakoff way back in the 1860s.....he resides here today. He had to wait around patiently enduring endless speeches etc, but came ...through it with flying colours!! The oldest living student was 97 year old Ethel Perry (nee Aston) daughter of William (Harry) Aston and Mary Crowle, old storekeepers of Landsborough. She was born in 1880, married Robert Perry and resided in a farm on Shays Flat - her family was George, Ivy (Leslie), Arthur, Ollie (Emerson), Myrt (Bibby), Bob and Max. Amongst her grandchildren are current NG shire mayor Murray Emerson, and ex VFL-Wimmera footballers Greg and Chris Perry. Sadly she passed away only weeks after this photo was taken. A couple of other photos of the day were also located amongst the slide collection, and are shown here as well.

22.01.2022 Our monthly meeting/combined AGM is scheduled for Monday 22nd June at 5.00pm at the Barkly Room. This will be on the basis of changes to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions relating to the permitted numbers at indoor gatherings, and if there is any update we will advise members. Diane will send out the correspondence in the week leading up to the 22nd. Due to the lateness of the June meeting, there will be no meeting in July. The normal monthly meetings will resume on the 1st Monday of each month commencing with Monday 3rd August. Hope to see you all there.

22.01.2022 The Landsborough Coffee Palace was on the corner of McKinlay & Burke St, and was established in the 1880s. It was also known as the Astons wine bar. Owners over the years included Jack Aston, the Oats brothers, the Bunworth family and finally Frank and Irene Comitti. The building had a billiard room, rooms for accommodation and at the back were stables and a large underground tank. Irene was the final holder of a license for a wine saloon in Victoria. It closed for business i...n 1958. The building remained on site through till 1963, when it was demolished and Graeme & Vonda Sandlant built their home at the same location. The photos show the Coffee Palace in 1924 looking up McKinlay st towards the police precinct and school, and the last glimpses of the building in 1962 just prior to removal taken at the centenary celebrations in March of that year. 21.01.2022 Another photo of the Landsborough Coffee Palace & Wine Bar, this time going way back to the days when Jack Aston owned it. Lots of people out front, but sadly no information on who they might be.

21.01.2022 Street Parades in Landsborough over the years. In 1918 the Landsborough Brass Band performed as part of a fund raising exercise to build the new public hall. This photo was taken from the top of the old Aston Butcher Shop. This was now 102 years ago!! Band Members: Fred Friend (In hat - Drummer) From back: Norman Vendy, Fred Main, Arthur Turner, Jack Friend (BandMaster) Next Row: Tom Hogan, Reg Vendy, Albert Dunn, Bob Appelt... Front Row: Bill Appelt, EB Dunn, Bert Little From 1956, another "Back to Landsborough" celebration was held, and a few photos are shown from that occasion, including the old coffee palace again in the background of the last photo.

20.01.2022 A couple of scenes of Landsborough, with the old Aston Butcher Shop and the post office. Not sure who the young fellow is outside the shop, but if its anyone that we know be sure to comment accordingly. Best guess is that this is sometime in the 1960s.

20.01.2022 Todays school photo of Landsborough SS - 1983 saw a boom of enrolments, so the school photos were split into 2 groups - Prep to 2 and 3 to 6

20.01.2022 Hope you all enjoyed our article on all things Landsborough West in the May 2020 edition of the "Landsborough News". Look out for our article on the history of Crowlands, as well as its old school, in the June edition. Here are some pictorial highlights of Landsborough West over the years. Also the students in the 1940 school class photo have now been identified, with thanks to Isobel Simon (nee Taylor) a former student of the school. We hope to cover Navarre, Elmhurst, Amphi and all the other localities in which the news is distributed in future editions.

20.01.2022 And we go way back to 1954 for this photo of the Landsborough State School. 17.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who contributed and messaged us to put names to faces in this old school bus photo from 1949. The bus behind the group is actually Williamsons (Stawell) although the Navarre one outside Stawell Tech is Sandlants. There are both Landsborough and Navarre kids in the photo. The bus driver (wearing the hat) is Charlie Driscoll. The girl inside the bus is Shirley Aston, below her to the left is Laurie Vendy, to her right is John Mathieson. Moving towards the rig...ht is ?? then Don Hoffman, Ian Leslie, Marg Thomas. On the far right (sitting) is Nancy Palmer, behind her is John Comitti (or possibly a Vance?). 3rd from the right (sitting) is Carmel Vendy (married Pat O'Callaghan). Next to Carmel at front is Ivy & Dawn Work. Left Side: The blonde haired kid to the left of Charlie Driscoll is Jim Holden. Kneeling in front of him (in school uniform) is Bernie O'Callaghan and next to him on right is Robert Bibby from Navarre. Roberts older brother Jeff Bibby is in the white shirt in middle of photo, to the right of him (below) is Len Perry, to the left of him is Ron McKinnis. Once we can visit Lowe St nursing home in Ararat to see Ian Leslie, as well as Eventide in Stawell (to see Carmel O'Callaghan) hopefully we can identify the rest. See more

15.01.2022 Sadly yesterdays "road map to recovery" offered very little to rural areas in terms of a realistic re-opening of many of our community facilities and small businesses - other than a late November possibility based on virus numbers in entire regional Victoria. In particular no indoor gatherings will be feasible for our historical group for the foreseeable future. On this basis, the October and November monthly meetings are also cancelled. We will aim towards some type of get-...together in December if it is possible, but we will wait for further developments. We are all disappointed and there is a sense of despair and hopelessness out there at present - but we will get through this, and our group and indeed the wider community will emerge stronger than ever. We have maintained a good presence thanks largely to our support from the team at "Landsborough News" and also Craig at the Pyrenees and Ararat Advocates. Look out for our ongoing contributions to those newspapers, and please support them all - and look out for our regular postings here. Despite the impacts of the pandemic, we have remained very active throughout and plenty of exciting projects are now in the pipeline. Regards from all the team at the Landsborough Historical Group.

15.01.2022 The Historical group has had some outings and working bees to kick off 2020. Firstly came an excellent pizza lunch at Summerfield winery in Moonambel back in February, and then a working bee held at our site in Landsborough on 21st March, which entailed a complete clean out of the Vendy Room and laying down of carpet in preparation for our new display. Sadly with the new social isolation measures now in place, all such activity - including our monthly meetings - have been ca...ncelled till further notice. Whilst this is very sad for all of us, we will emerge from these difficult times hopefully stronger than ever, and everyone please stay safe and above all, only leave your house for the essential reasons outlined by our authorities. Things will not stop altogether though, as long as our good friends at "Landsborough News" keep publishing our monthly newspaper, we will be there with our monthly article, and April is a feature on the sawmillers of Navarre featuring many familiar family names. The benefits of working from home will also see our July newsletter out and loaded with more historical articles of the district and more local family histories.

15.01.2022 Just going through the final lot of photos for inclusion in the Landsborough PS book, this one has been found - but no captions or student details with it. Im guessing late 60s/early 70s but hopefully some of the faces can be identified to enable us to date the photo more accurately....

13.01.2022 The wheatgrowers in the district who used Landsborough West grain facilities for loading - upon closure of the railway line. As outlined in this memo from 1954. Many familiar names including Amarant, Bibby, Parry, Vance, Matthews, Gibson, Cunningham, Work, Boatman, Price and Kelleher.

13.01.2022 A couple of street scenes of Landsborough - 60 years apart. The first photo takes us way back to 1902 when a parade was held in the main street to celebrate the British victory at the relief of the siege of Mafeking in the Boer War. Looking south towards Elmhurst. The second scene is the street parade held as part of anniversary celebrations in March 1962. That too is almost 60 years ago.

12.01.2022 The Landsborough State School Class of 1958 now has names. Here they all are: Back Row: Pauline Browne, Ann Browne, Melville Aston, Billy Ellis, Wally Aston (hes the one pulling the face!!), Pat Brown, Peter Matthews, Greg Dean, Jo Brick, Helen Turner 2nd Row: Miss Fisher (Teacher), Garth Turner, Peter Friend, Valma Ellis, Marion Marland, John Turner, Kay Hore, Diane Leslie... 3rd Row: Gary Leslie, Maree Browne, Maree Vance, Daryl Leslie, Shane Friend, Gary Matthews, Jim Browne, Barbara Turner, Peter Sandlant, Frances Browne Front Row: Frank Aston, Helen Browne, Anita Vance, Brian Sandlant, Pam Perry, Patricia Friend Teacher: Mr Black

11.01.2022 1934 Landsborough State School now has a full list of names. Many familiar family names amongst this lot of students.

10.01.2022 Here is an article which featured in last Fridays Pyrenees Advocate and the new Ararat Advocate which kicked off from 1st May. With thanks to Craig Wilson. The papers both deserve the full support of our community, given that ACM, the publisher of the Horsham, Stawell and Ararat papers chose to cease their operation some weeks ago due to the adverse impacts of the pandemic. Talk about abandoning the people of the Wimmera. Not to mention the loss of local employment. Speaking of the railway book, thanks to the latest bit of publicity, sales have taken off again and we now have less than 10 copies left. Thanks again to everyone for your wonderful support. Hopefully we will be active, and up and running again very soon.

10.01.2022 Todays Landsborough state school photo heads back to 1969 - this rather unusual angle captures the students very deep in concentration. Top: Greg Carslake, Bernard Molan, David Hodgetts, Ray Murphy, Stephen Amarant Bottom: Andrew Murphy, Danny Molann, Danny Vendy, Michael Browne, Helen Amarant, Robyn Murphy, Aileen Browne, Kathy Vendy.

10.01.2022 Todays Landsborough State school photo - we head way back to 1968. Back Row: J. Souter (Teacher), Thomas Browne, Andrew Souter, Vince O'Callaghan, Andrew Murphy, Ray Murphy, David Hodgetts, Daniel Molan, Bernard Molan, Stephen O'Callaghan, David Turner, Robert Hodgetts & E.Angel (Teacher) Middle Row: Sarah Turner, Bernadette Murphy, Rhonda Amarant, Monica Vendy, Daniel Vendy, Geoff Hodgetts, Michael Browne... 09.01.2022 The Sandlants bus. If anyone caught the school bus from Landsborough in order to attend Stawell High and Tech schools around 1949, then they are likely to be in this picture. Hopefully some of the students may be able to be identified, they will all be Landsborough natives. And the Navarre school bus is also captured in this image from Stawell around the same time. The journey into Stawell in those days was a treacherous and slow trip along gravel roads, and rickety wooden br...idges across waterways which became impassable in times of bad weather. It was a major adventure just to get to and from school. Sandlants is a name which has become synonymous with Landsborough, with Bert "Pop" Sandlant starting the bus operation in Lexton way back in 1918. They ran a regular bus conveying passengers and later on freight into the mining exchange bus depot in Ballarat until 1972. The site of the old coffee palace became the Sandlant residence and bus depot in 1963, although a larger bus depot now operates from Stawell West as the operations expanded. In 1973, they took over the Stawell town bus service, and run it to the present day along with all the town school runs. The country school runs from Barkly-Navarre and Landsborough via Joel South to take the students into Stawell schools are still run by Sandlants, along with V/Line contracted daily services to Halls Gap. In 1977 they began taking Stawell students into Marian College in Ararat once boarding arrangements down there had ceased, and 3 buses are still needed today to cope with the loadings including a bus that picks up the Pomonal and Halls Gap students before topping up in Stawell. The operation has been handed down through Ian Sandlant, his son Graeme and now Graeme jnr continuing the family tradition.

09.01.2022 58 years ago this month Landsborough celebrated its centenary. This 8 minutes of old film shot way back in 1962 has recently been extracted via DVD to a file. There are many wonderful scenes of Landsborough here the way it was, and plenty of people - many who will no longer be with us. You may well spot one of your relatives in here. There is scenes of the long-gone Coffee Palace, located where the Sandlants now are on the McKinlay St corner. Plus the old Appelt brothers bla...cksmiths next to the hall where the bowling green now stands. Also the old courthouse opposite the Catholic Church which was demolished not long after this movie was shot. The main street is featured along with the end of the Stawell road which was not sealed at this point in time. We visit the Malakoff and also the football oval where a large crowd was on hand. And their 1961 flag proudly flying. This is all priceless footage, from the Jeffery family collection, with thanks to Max. See more

09.01.2022 Who remembers the days of the manual telephone exchange in Landsborough? Here is the full directory of those that had a phone back in the 1960s and their location and numbers. The exchange was open 24 hours a day, from midnight Monday morning until 1.00pm Saturday. Then the events of sport on Saturday and church on Sunday took priority, although you could also make a call between 900am and 1000am on Sundays. The area covered by the exchange included Wattle Creek, the Malakoff, and Shays Flat. Phone number 1 was Charlie Aston, a long time resident of McKinlay St, his old house still stands on the right overlooking the entrance to the rec reserve. The Pub was relegated to No. 2, while Hodgetts store was No. 3

08.01.2022 Look out for our article about all things Crowlands in the forthcoming June edition of "Landsborough News". This photo from 1953 shows an Ararat-bound train heading out of Crowlands towards the school and main Ararat road (with the old Lewis place in the background, sadly it is no longer there), also the 148 milepost in the foreground.

07.01.2022 The "Lost Railway Stations Of The Pyrenees" book is now a sell out. Last couple of copies were sold today....we cannot thank the wider community enough - to everyone who purchased a copy, thanks so much for your support. And to the team at Landsborough News, Craig Wilson at the Pyrenees and Ararat Advocate, and the Ararat Advertiser/Stawell Times-News - thanks for all you did to help us promote the book. We are hoping to engage in another print run, although this may take so...me time in the current circumstances. You can E-Mail Diane at [email protected] and she will add your name to the waiting list if you would still like a copy and have only heard about it now. Our next major publication will be a detailed history (in words and pictures) of Landsborough & District, hopefully in time for our 160th anniversary in 2022. It will also include sections on local family histories. Work is already progressing well. More news on our resumption of activities next month will come shortly, subject to the proposed easing of Coronavirus restrictions. We look forward to when we can all catch up again. Regards The team at Landsborough Historical Group.

07.01.2022 Another Landsborough West memory - in the days before Skype & Zoom, one way families kept in touch with each other was by sending postcards, often with a family photo on one side. After the birth of their daughter Myrene, Amy Leslie (nee Aston) wrote this card to her brother George Aston. On the other side was a photo of Myrene. This postcard is from 1917, now 103 years ago. A wonderful reminder of simpler times. George and Kitty Aston and their family history were covered in... Judy Martin's recently published book "A Life Of Love" - a wonderful look at the lives of one of our pioneering Landsborough families, and a much loved Landsborough couple - it is highly recommended. George Aston grew up in Landsborough West as one of the children of Harry & Emma, and the Astons were an important part of the history of the settlement. The photo is another Aston brother Harry, his wife Charlotte, Amy Aston (Leslie) and their children - from left, Marjorie, Edward (Roy), Florence Aston & Myrene & Ronald Leslie.

06.01.2022 Sad to report that no Landsborough class photos were taken at all between 1958 and 1968, not until the latter year when John Souter took over as head teacher were photos regularly taken again. 1974 was the last of the black & white era for class photos. The wonders of colour photography were introduced from 1975. If you were an O'Callaghan, Amarant or Sandlant then you made up nearly half of the whole school!! Look out for the book on the full history of the school which wil...l be printed in the coming weeks. Every class photo that could be located is included. Landsborough SS the class of 1974 Back Row: John Marshall, Steve O’Callaghan, Dave Turner, Rohan Work, Lyn Johnston, Jacinta O’Callaghan, Margaret Sandlant, Ian Hodgetts, Sharlane Marshall, Craig Lindsay Middle Row: Sharon Delaney, Geri O’Callaghan, Dannie Johnstone, Phillip Marshall, Margaret Amarant, Gaye O’Callaghan, Sandra Sandlant, Brendan Amarant, Dennis O’Callaghan Front Row: Mark O’Callaghan, Ian Sandlant, Leanne Leslie, Joanne Jolly, Tim O’Callaghan, Damian Browne, Jillian Ellis, Leanne Lindsay, Steven Delaney

05.01.2022 With all the bad things happening in the world today, its time to look back at some happy and carefree times. Its 1953. The fortnightly goods train to Navarre has called into Landsborough Railway station and a Landsborough West local is chatting to the train crew. Up front more unloading is taking place whilst the locomotive quietly simmers away. This once common scene is now a distant memory.

05.01.2022 Due to the social isolation/distancing policies that have now been imposed as part of the Covid-19 pandemic, sadly our monthly meetings are suspended till further notice. We will advise everyone when they will resume. We will still be able to respond to and perform research enquiries, but unfortunately we cannot accept personal visits to the Barkly Room. Our regular newsletters - and articles in the "Landsborough News" will continue for now, as will our presence on facebook. ... To everyone out there who is experiencing hardship and upheaval in their lives, you are in our thoughts - but please do adhere strictly to the social isolation policies as they ramp in the coming weeks and months. Lives are at stake, especially those of our elderly and vulnerable. Take care everyone and we hope to catch up again at a later stage. Regards The committee and members at Landsborough Historical Group

04.01.2022 The 2nd Landsborough football team to win a premiership came in 1960, after a long 40 year wait. This year now marks the 60th anniversary of that premiership. Again many legends of Landsborough feature and sadly many have now passed away. This side actually won back to back flags in 60 and 61, during the sides stint in the old Ararat & District Football association which ran from 1957 till 1964. This side defeated Caledonians 13.14 (92) to 2.5 (17). The following year they de...feated Great Western 13.10 (88) to 6.12 (48). 02.01.2022 Some more school photos - from the "Weekly Times" 1961. Landsborough West and also two of Landsborough. As there was no official school class photos taken then, this is the next closest thing....
