25.01.2022 Hmmmm. How should we have it for dinner. Any suggestions. First poddy for the year. Hopefully the only one too.

25.01.2022 Today I downed tools at the homestead and headed out for a bit of an explore with @getlosttours and we found some awesome places that I have never been to befor...e. Plus even though we have not had much rain if you care to look there are still wildflowers to be found. #exploring #outbackwesternaustralia #wildflowers @ Melangata Station Stay See more

25.01.2022 Good morning. We are very thankful to say that our experience with the cyclone has resulted in very little wind and 15mm of glorious soaking rain. We in fact experience worse in a usual summer storm We feel for all of those that were in the direct path that didn't fair so well.

25.01.2022 Hi there my awesome peeps. Just a little shout out so you don't think I am being rude. I can not and more importantly do not want to be at the homestead all the time. So when there is no one here I have a friendly little answering machine on my telephone that takes messages so I can ring you back when I come in from out yonder. Please please please. Can you leave your name and your number as this is old school technology that does not record your number like a mobile to mobile call. I have had a couple just in the last few days that have said can you call me back on this number. I am sorry to say I can't and it bothers me to think that you might miss out on seeing our amazing place just because I couldn't call you back. Peace, love and a pinch of Melangata magic to you all. Jo.

25.01.2022 This is Tegan on behalf of Jo,(mum) We are currently having some technical difficulties out here at Melangata! Our wifi server is down, so we cannot recieve email or social media messages until its back up.... Please call the homestead landline on (08) 99637777. Our phone will not ring long enough to get to it unless we are sitting right next to it, so please leave a message so we can call you back. Or call again after 6 rings!! Time to get old school #remoteliving Tegan

25.01.2022 Our council brings some good stuff into town it's always good to make the effort to travel in to be part of it.

22.01.2022 I am a bit proud of my sourdough at the moment.

22.01.2022 Hi my awesome peeps. I just wanted to let you know a thing that frustrates me. As you know Melangata is reasonably remote, not really remote but just far enough out of mobile range to remind folks of what it's like to not be connected all the time. ( This is a good thing) anyway my gripe is to highlight just one small thing that clearly indicates to me that when the shinny bums are making decisions in their shinny towers they have no thoughts about those of us that happen to... live just outside of technology. Some banks have made a system where by when you want to make a direct payment from your bank account to someone else's they send you an SMS security code. TO YOUR MOBILE. Well duhh. That's not going to work even 20 km from mobile range let alone 200km. Government. Yes that's right our government blatantly discriminates against those of us that don't have mobile coverage because they do the same thing with their My gov accounts. When we have to drive 70km just to get a 4 number code just to access banking or myGov services it's not good enough and there should be much easier options than they provide. Rant over. Oh and this is Adrianna. Our newest cutie. See more

17.01.2022 Stay tuned for regular updates as to how my arid loving seeds survive. Trying something a bit different in the veggie garden this year so I can get produce over the incredibly hot summers we have here. I am also having a go at some arid loving food and fodder trees. Watch this space. Seeds are from Drylands permiculture farm in Geraldton.

16.01.2022 "I didn't know" is all I got from the woman whom I informed that the beautiful golden baby in this picture that they allowed to follow them KMs away from the homestead on their push bikes had died a horrible death because they failed to even ask if it was ok for her to go with them. Apparently they didn't know of the risks and dangers to pets and working dogs in this whole region as they hadn't bothered to take any notice of the many signs large and small that dot the highwa...ys and back roads even the one they rode past. They don't know just how valuable and treasured our working dogs are and that they are treated like children. They didn't know that I am so paranoid about our dogs going more than 200 m away from the homestead that they never do unless they have a muzzle on. They didn't know that we did everything possible to make their area around the homestead safe. They didn't know that she was still a puppy and was just showing great promise as a first class working dog. They don't know just how many hours had already gone into her training. They didn't know just how hard I am on guests when they come here to never take your eyes of your dog and make it wear a muzzle and keep it on a leed. They didn't know that my beautiful golden girl was the light of my life and slept by my bed on the cold nights, never moving or making a sound till I got up. They didn't know that she ran like the wind and was the happiest friendliest little soul around. They didn't know that she had bike races with my grandson in the afternoons while he was here during the Covid lock down. They didn't know that while they allowed her to follow them i was looking and calling for her as it was time for her to have some quiet time. I am equal parts devastated, heartbroken and angry as shit that all they had to do was turn their bikes around and come and ask if it was ok for her to go with them. What I am most upset about is that they didn't even know her name. Her name was Blondie. She was loved by everyone who came here. So please please if you come to my place or any one elses places in the outback. Make sure that you do know and never never assume it is ok to have someone else's dog follow you. It's not hard to ask. Oh and for all the anti wild dog bait people out there. This post is not for you to get on your bandwagon and you can politely fuck off we are sad enough without you piling it on too This post will hopefully mean that in the future more people will know. Even though I am going to bawl like a baby even more could all the people who have been here and have a photo of her please put it in the comments. Run like the wind my golden girl you will be missed for ever.

15.01.2022 Just a heads up my awesome peeps. This weekend and into next week 9th- 13 th August. We have had the prediction that we just might possibly, could very well, maybe have all our winter rain in just a few days. Not ideal I know and as we have been in drought conditions out here for a while we will be welcoming it with open arms. Mind you all the predictions have eventuated to nothing so far but we remain optimistic. So if you plan on being anywhere in the out back around our a...rea please remember a few things. If we have more than 20 mm of rain it is likely our council will close their very well maintained dirt roads. Please inform yourself by ringing the council you are in. If you find you are in an area that receives significant rain then please be prepared to sit tight for a couple of days to let the roads dry out. It's not hard, just stay put and you won't wreck the roads that we have to drive on all year. We have everything crossed for some life giving rain out here so please don't be disappointed if your plans go astray. We work on Melangata time here so just sit back and enjoy the specticle, I know we will. Then again it also just might not happen. I will keep you posted. Jo

15.01.2022 Good night everyone.

14.01.2022 The homestead is looking particularly lovely this evening.

14.01.2022 Just like most of us this year has been a tumultuous one here at Melangata Station. But thanks to all you amazing West Aussie travellers we have had our best season yet. Apart from a couple of late guests at the end of October the Homestead is now closed for homestead stays. We are still open for tours through the homestead coffee and scones Jam and cream from 10-2, so long as the old boy doesn't want me out fencing and as this is now my time to pull out the tools and get re...novating again you will just have to take us as we are, paint and dust encrusted and probably a bit hot and bothered. The campground is always open so you are still welcome to swing by and park up for a day or three. A shout out to all my volunteers that have helped me through this year in ways that are immeasurable, you don't really understand just how much I appreciate you all. Ken was the tour guide extraordinaire and just when I needed some help the most a young man from Taiwan magically appeared to ease the burden around the homestead. Here's hoping to just as great a year next year and I hope all you west Aussies that have had a wander out yonder and decided that it is infact pretty cool to explore your own back yard do it all again, bring on 2021 See more

13.01.2022 Very happy here today. A glorious 26mm of rain . Creeks are running. Pools are full. Sun is out again.

12.01.2022 To all our awesome volunteers that have helped us remove old fences. We are now replacing them with brand spanking new ones. It's slow going but there is 3km of poles in the ground and 1 km of wire hung. Thanks for your help.

10.01.2022 We all downed tools today and went exploring and this time I climbed Walga Rock. A great day out with my 2021 staff. We needed it.

09.01.2022 Here at Melangata we are trying to achieve miracles on a shoe string budget and we have asked and received help from many awesome volunteers over the last few years. Wether it's helping Ken on the fencing program, there is always more fencing to be done. Or helping me about the unique homestead, there are always weeds to be pulled or cobwebs to be swept. We have been lucky enough to be blessed with some awesome volunteers that we are now happy to call friends and miracles a...re happening. A special shout out to a few of our latest volunteers. Greg and Betty you are both amazing and your help and friendship is truely valued. Thankyou for being here and being a support to ken while I had to be away. Terry and Cathy your contribution has been great and especially thanks to Terry for all the welding and new wire winder. Bert and Vera, for a couple of city slickers you both done good and your help has been appreciated, especially keeping Misery alive, we look forward to seeing you again when you return from the warmth of the north. Adrian is returning so he must like it out here and this time I hope to have my old Landy back for him to work on. ( Hopefully that doesn't scare him off) A lot of the stuff we have achieved over the past years has been only possible with the help of our volunteers. September will be our next big busy bee but if you are passing through and want to stay for a few days or even a month or two and lend a hand we will never say no. We understand just how valuable you are. Thanks Jo and Ken. See more

04.01.2022 The things you find in the middle of the outback. Another enjoyable day out touring with another happy group of intrepid explorers and camp oven cooks. It makes life so easy when your guests are lovely. But then only lovely people visit Melangata.

03.01.2022 Just a little story. I have always loved these birds, Red tail black Cockatoo. The first year we were here, when we arrived in February, there were maybe a dozen hanging around the homestead. One very kind fellow left me my first feather. That year 2016 was one of the best years for rain this station has had and sadly since then the rainfall has been on the decline with it looking very much like we will end this year with one of the lowest rainfall totals for many years. Th...e birds grew in number and by the end of September there would have been a mob of 200 or more, they were the sound track to my first year of station life. At the moment the soundtrack to station life is the listless creaking and groaning of the windmill being harassed into movement by the lazy dry wind. I always get a thrill and a small expectation that maybe they might bring some rain when they return. Anyway every year since we have been here they have left me a feather all of which have been female. Yesterday I was finishing off a shade structure in my veggie garden and repurposing all the old stuff I could find to do so. A piece of old rusty weld mesh was precariously balanced between some beams and one end was flopping down. Many times I walked underneath it muttering each time that I must prop it up or I might loose an eye. Of course I was distracted and you guest it I walked into the damn thing and luckily I ended up with a small wound on my scalp and nothing more than dented pride. A few choice words were spoken about what a bleeping idiot I was and so immediate action was taken to find another piece of wood to avoid doing the same thing again. Still muttering and counting my lucky stars as I bent down at the wood pile there right in Front of me was a beautiful male feather. All pain and indignation were instantly forgotten and now let's hope the male feather is a good omen. I know it made my day better regardless of rain.

02.01.2022 For any of you who don't have the camping gear and would like to still experience station life then we do have alternative budget basic accommodation. Have a look see.

02.01.2022 Here is hoping our 104 year old homestead can withstand what mother nature throws at us. Se you all on the other side

01.01.2022 Pretty happy with my garden at the moment.
