25.01.2022 Kyoto . . . One of the biggest tourist attractions in all of Japan, Kyoto, is located in the Kansai region on the island of Honshu. Up until 1869, Kyoto was the capital city of Japan before it was reallocated to Tokyo!



25.01.2022 Savate . . . Frances savate originated as a street fighting technique, starting with only foot kicks and open hand blows, as a closed-fist strike was considered a deadly weapon under the law, it is now practiced all over the world. Modern codified savate offers three levels of competition: assaut, pre-combat and combat. Starting with light contact and full protective gear through to full contact with only mouth and groin protectors. The word 'savate' comes from the French word, which means old shoe; generally a heavy type of footwear such as military or sailor boots.

25.01.2022 Mount Fuji . . . The tallest volcano in Japan, Mount Fuji is a dormant volcano and hasn't erupted since 1708. It is located just south-west of Tokyo and is one of the most distinctive features of Japan!

24.01.2022 Beijing . . . Did you know that this ancient capital city is home to a whopping 21 million people? That's almost more than the entire population of Australia residing in the one city! Beijing, also known as Peking, is a city rich with history due to it being established some 3 millennia ago and houses many historic temples and palaces. Make sure you consider this city as a destination if you're ever travelling by China!



24.01.2022 Kimchi . . . A traditional side dish of fermented vegetables, typically cabbage and radish, made with a variety of seasonings including chilli powder, spring onions, garlic and ginger. Kimchi can be eaten alone as a side dish but is most commonly accompanied with white rice to absorb some of the intense flavours.

23.01.2022 Jakarta . . . Not only is Jakarta the capital city of Indonesia, it is also the largest and most populous city of the country with over 10 million Indonesians calling the city home. This massive city was first established in the fourth century and has been seeing rapid economic growth over the past decade.



23.01.2022 Chorizo . . . Traditionally made from pork, you may find this sausage eaten with or without cooking. Chorizos can range from lean to fat and sweet to spicy. Eaten in sandwiches, grilled, fried or baked alongside other foodstuffs; we dont know anyone who would say no to a chorizo!

23.01.2022 Ramen . . . With the popularity of ramen in the modern world, you'll be hard pressed to find a person who hasn't heard of this delicious meal. The literal translation of ramen is "pulled noodle" and one theory of the origin of ramen is that it was introduced to Japan during the 1660s by a Chinese scholar who fled to Japan to escape the Manchu rule.

It is also one of the most popular places to visit receiving 10 million international visitors each year - making it the world's 9th most visited city.

22.01.2022 Florence . . . The capital city of the Tuscany region of Italy, the city of Florence is hailed as one of the most important cities of the middle ages. Considered by many academics as the birthplace of the Renaissance, the city of Florence was the birthplace for many of the renowned famous artists we know of today - including Da Vinci, Michaelangelo and Botticelli. Millions of tourists flock to this region each year to witness the culture and monuments from years past.

20.01.2022 Tom Yum Goong . . . This delicious soup is characterised by its distinct hot and sour flavours. It is typically made with fresh ingredients including lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, lime juice, fish sauce and red chillies. This particular variety of Tom Yum is served with prawns ("goong") as the main ingredient.



18.01.2022 Gazpacho . . . This refreshing cold soup made of raw, blended vegetables is a Spanish classic. This dish originated from the Andalusian region in the southern part of Spain but is now eaten widely throughout both Spain and Portugal. Typical ingredients include stale bread, tomato, cucumber, onion and garlic.

17.01.2022 Phuket . . . One of the most popular destinations in Thailand for tourists, Phuket is home to many beautiful beaches. This tropical island attracts over 5 million tourists each year. 16.01.2022 Egg Tart . . . The egg tart is a form of custard tart which originates from the province of Guangzhou in China. It was first created by the Zhenguang Restaurant back in the 1920s when each restaurant in the area would battle for business by inventing new dim sum dishes each week. In modern time, it is one of the most popular dishes when going "Yum Cha".

16.01.2022 Hot cross buns . . . We hope everyone had a lovely Easter break and filled themselves up with hot cross buns! These soft and fluffy buns are topped with raisins and finished with a symbolic "X" on top (marking the cross which Jesus was crucified on). The hot cross bun dates back to the 14th century when an English monk baked a batch of these buns and distributed them to the local poor on Good Friday.

16.01.2022 Som Tam . . . This fresh papaya salad dish is native to Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam who all share similar cuisines. This salad is made with shredded unripe papaya which is then pounded together with various other ingredients in a mortar and pestle and then served with fish sauce. Common ingredients found in this dish are tomatos, green beans, various seafood and hot chilli.

15.01.2022 Ma Po Tofu . . . One of the oldest dishes from the Sichuan region, the ma po tofu has the signature spice and fragrant flavour of Sichuan. The combination of pork, bean paste and chilli is the perfect antidote for Melbourne's cold, rainy nights.

15.01.2022 Ssireum . . . This form of folk wrestling is a traditional Korean national sport and dates back all the way to the fourth century. In its modern form, it is symbolised by contestants each wearing a belt (known as a 'satba') that wraps around their waist and thighs. Victory is achieved by bringing any part of the opponent's body above the knee to the ground.

Also known as a French loaf, the baguette, was first mentioned in the 1920s - however, its history is not academically documented and long, stick-like breads have been referenced to as far back as the 18th century in France. These days, this type of bread is eaten all over the world and is available at almost any bakery you can find.

10.01.2022 Did you know that, in Japan , it is considered bad luck for one to sleep with their head facing north? This taboo dates back over 2000 years and derives from Buddhism where it was said that Buddha passed away under a sal tree with his head facing north.

10.01.2022 Ibiza . . . A small island in the Mediterranean Sea off the eastern coast of Spain, Ibiza is well known for its nightlife and club scene. Ibiza is considered to be a very popular tourist destination and attracts around 6 million tourists each year. However, unbeknownst to most, Ibiza is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site - a notable example are the Renaissance-era walls of Ibiza Town that can still be found scattered all over the town.

09.01.2022 Greco-Roman Wrestling . . . The sport that is now known as "Greco-Roman Wrestling" is a style of wrestling that finds its roots from the wrestling that was formerly found in the ancient Greek Olympic Games. The term itself was first coined by Italian wrestler Basilio Bartoletti back in the 19th century. In modern times, this sport is performed all over the world and even in the modern day Summer Olympics.

07.01.2022 Chances are that you were told as a child not to open an umbrella inside the house due to it causing bad luck. One of the possible origins of this superstition is that, back in 18th century Britain , when large metal spoked umbrellas first started being used, their designs were quite large and bulky when opened. This often caused injuries and objects to be broken when opened indoors!

07.01.2022 Tiramisu . . . This traditional Italian dessert is made up of finger biscuits dipped in coffee, then layered with mascarpone cheese and then flavoured with cocoa. Most common accounts attribute the invention of the tiramisu to a restaurant named "Le Beccherie" in Treviso, Italy back in the 1960s. The word "tiramisù" literally means "cheer me up" in the Italian language.

This historically rich city is home to many wonderful works of architecture - the most prominent one being the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. This huge cathedral took a whopping six centuries to be fully built and completed and was funded by the wealth which the city attracted in the 13th century through the wool trade.

In modern day times, the holiday doesn't actually mark the Queen's birthday but is actually a holiday which is proclaimed for each Commonwealth nation. In fact, Western Australia and Queensland actually have the holiday on a seperate day to the rest of Australia!

05.01.2022 Did you know that, in Japan , you should never stick your pair of chopsticks into your bowl of rice upright? It is highly frowned upon and considered rude. This is due to the chopsticks, when placed in this particular position, resembling a pair of incense sticks which are commonly used in Japan to cleanse an area and appease spirits.

05.01.2022 Parkour . . . A training discipline using movement that developed from military obstacle course training, Parkour as a movement was developed in 1988 by David Belle in France. The word "parkour" derives from the French term "parcours du combattant" (obstacle course).

03.01.2022 Did you know that, in Korea , writing a person's name in red ink is considered a serious cultural taboo? This is because red ink is used to record a deceased person's name in their family register and funeral banners. This use of red ink after a person's passing is believed to help ward off evil spirits.

03.01.2022 Aikido . . . This modern form of Japanese martial art developed by Morihei Ueshiba first came into prominence back in the late 1920s. A big part of aikido's philosophy is in using the opponent's attack momentum and turning it against them through the use of various locks and throws. The word "aikido" is often translated as "the way of harmonious spirit".
