23.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Week’s theme: Show me your true faith Today’s theme: True faith isn’t blinded by appearances... Read James 2:1-4: My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favouritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine cloths and say, ‘Here’s a good seat for you,’ but say to the poor man, ‘You stand there’ or ‘Sit on the floor by my feet,’ have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) James’ rebuke is brotherly. His readers are after all fellow believers in the Lord Jesus. These fellow believers tend to look down on certain people. It is not true faith. The seemingly poor and tattered at first glance is not inferior and the expensively dressed is not necessarily better. James warns that such judgement is ill-considered. True faith doesn’t distinguish between people. The law teaches to love your neighbour as yourself. Our Lord Jesus tells us in Luke 6:35: But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. The apostle Paul even goes so far as to say: ...God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Rom. 5:8) True faith follows the wise counsel of the apostle Paul: Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesustaking the very nature of a servant (cf. Phil. 2:5-7). Prayer: Our heavenly Father, guide us by Your Spirit to not exalt ourselves. Teach us humility and to place others above ourselves. Amen Danie de Kock Emeritus

22.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Theme this week: Think before you speak Today’s theme: Speak with wisdom from heaven... Read James 3:17-18: But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness. (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) Earthly wisdom is merely my own wisdom (if you could even call it wisdom). Ultimately it is nothing but foolishness. If I seek to act wisely, I can only do so guided by the Holy Spirit and therefore I must pray for it. Yes, I must talk to God about it. James already brings it up in Chapter 1: If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him. (Jam. 1:5) We have no excuse when it comes to wisdom. We who have been grafted into Christ in true faith can and must speak wisdom. It is after all at our disposal, we just need to ask. Guided by the Holy Spirit we can each show peace-lovingness, submissiveness and mercifulness in the way we speak. Prayer: Thank You, heavenly Father, for the powerful guidance of the Holy Spirit. Fill us with Your Spirit that we may speak with wisdom from heaven and bear witness of You. Amen Danie de Kock Emeritus

19.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Theme this week: The new normal anchored in die old! Read Psalm 18:29-30: You, O Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.... (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) Biblical hope in the Lord takes account thereof that life can grow dark, but it fixes its eyes (and heart) on the Lord whose (inner) light shines brightly! The Lord can give light... This has always been normal (read: true) for us... because the bright Morning Star, Jesus Christ, has already risen and announced a new day of salvation and life (Luke 1:78; Rev. 22:16); because He is the sun of righteousness (Mal. 4:2) who in principle drove away the darkness (evil, the brokenness of life) and who will eventually take it away completely! This knowledge brings hope... and a total turnaround in David’s life (please read Ps. 18:33-35 tonight). God gives him the strength - when he faces a troop - to scale the cliffs of life. He makes his road prosperous - no obstacle derails him! He makes his feet like those of a deer that is not (de)pressed by the heavy burden of life, but traverses it light-footedly and yet steadily. Prayer: Lord, let the light of Jesus’ coming and salvation light my life. Amen Charl van Rooy

18.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Theme this week: A living community of faith! Read Acts 2:42, 44-47: They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowshipAll the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying th...e favour of all the people. (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) Was the lockdown, with its associated prohibition on physical attendance at church services, perhaps the death blow to church gatherings...? A devilish attempt to feed people’s self-indulgence and tear them away from fellowship Reading about the way of life of the first of Christian church it is clear - this must not be Believers may not and cannot let each other go! Fellowship (koinonia) is one of the true marks of being church (a sentiment echoed throughout the Bible). It is a bond of love that makes them seek each other out and care for each other in practical ways (which may take other forms than in Acts 2). It reflects in physically gathering in the Lord’s presence around His Word and in prayer - in worship services (temple) and in smaller groups (at home) to support one another materially and spiritually. Yes, the lockdown regulations make it (more) difficult, but not impossible. Remember: gathering in a building doesn’t automatically create koinonia, but sincere hearts that in unity belong to the Lord (v. 44). Let’s stop being fixated on what we cannot do at the moment and focus on creative ways to serve each other, and resolve to take part in our digital worship services. Prayer: Lord, thank You that we may be part of Your church. Show us and make our hearts willing to live in fellowship. Amen Charl van Rooy

18.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Read Proverbs 10:22: The blessing of the Lord brings wealth, and he adds no trouble to it. (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com)... This proverb stands in stark contrast to society who measures man’s worth by his possessions. Our relationship with God is our most treasured possession. This blessing is not confined to the wealthy, but is meant for all who call on the Name of the Lord, for whoever believes in Jesus Christ. We don’t have to labour and toil for it, because our efforts can add nothing to what God gives us freely. Jesus already did it all! Those who only seek material prosperity will never know the true joy of those who seek their joy in God. Are you enjoying the blessing of a relationship with God or are you trying to find fulfilment in something else? Prayer: Lord, thank You that I received the greatest blessing possible from Your hand when Jesus died for me on the cross and rose from the dead. Thank You that I may live in a relationship with You. Open my eyes thereto that nothing here on earth can come close to it. Amen Thomas Dreyer

16.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Theme this week: The new normal anchored in die old! Read 2 Peter 3:13-15: But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness. So then, dear friends, since you are looking forward to this, make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. Bear in mind that our Lord’s patience means salvation... (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) God is on His way with His (old) creation to restoration - to a new creation, the end of the age! This future expectation influences and changes our present deeply: not passive daydreamers about someday, but children of (and in) our time! not worldly avoiding (escaping), but worldly dedication! The Christian hope evoked in us by this future expectation seeks to become deeds of hope - for today! Put differently: The hopeful (certain) prospect of the end of the age leads to a new lifestyle - the sanctification (repentance and renewal) of this life! It asks of us to make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him. May this old normal remain part of the new normal! Prayer: Lord, thank You that we are on our way to the new heaven and earth. Let us live, as You have always taught us, in deeds of hope. Amen Charl van Rooy

14.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Read Proverbs 3:28: Do not say to your neighbour, ‘Come back later; I’ll give it tomorrow’ - when you now have it with you. (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com)... If I truly know God’s grace that He showed me in Jesus Christ, then it has to guide the way I behave towards the people He sends on my path (my neighbour). Put differently: Whoever has received God’s grace cannot help but to show grace to others. What did God do when I came to Him in my sin? Did He say: Come back tomorrow? Most people send their neighbour in need away in the hope that they won’t come back. What effect it would it have for God and His Kingdom if you and I acted differently than most other people and helped immediately? Prayer: Father, thank You for never sending us away when we come to You. Thank You that we never have to wait on Your presence and love and grace. Help us to give just as You do when we are able to do so. Amen Thomas Dreyer

14.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Week’s theme: See God’s light shining on our life questions. Today’s theme: How do I keep from deceiving myself?... Read James 1:19-27: My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires. Therefore, het rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you. Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the world but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but doing it he will be blessed in what he does. If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself form being polluted by the world. (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) If you regularly hear God’s Word but fail to do what it says, you are deceiving yourself. How so? We are not believers just because we attend church every Sunday and listen to the Word. Believing is about what we do and that is why James writes in the next chapter: As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead (Jam. 2:26). Faith without deeds is self-deception... it is not faith! Faith is about your words and deeds. How you behave is guided by the Holy Spirit, because the Spirit works through the Word. If you hear the Word, you act in accordance thereto guided by the Spirit. As our Lord Jesus says: Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven (Matt. 7:21). Prayer: Father, guide me with Your Spirit to not deceive myself, but to serve You in obedience. Amen Danie de Kock Emeritus

13.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Theme this week: The new normal anchored in die old! Read Hebrews 11:1: Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.... (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) Living with hope has always been normal (read: part of) for believers. Hope in the Lord has also always pointed to what we can’t see (yet), to that which lies in the future - the same as earthly hope. Different to earthly (that points to an uncertain future), Christian hope speaks of absolute assurance in terms of that which still lies in the future. Hebrews 11:1 says: it’s to be sure... and certain. Faith and hope is two sides of the same coin! There is no hope without faith in God! Faith is taking God (in present time) at His (promise)-word. Hope is the assurance that He - in future - will fulfil this promise-word! Faith is knowing (and confessing) that God is our gracious Father! Hope is the certain expectation that He will indeed show Himself to be our merciful Father! Prayer: Heavenly Father, light my faith eyes to see, also and especially the unseen, because it is sure in You. Amen Charl van Rooy

10.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Theme this week: Think before you speak Today’s theme: Beware of boasting of your own wisdom... Read James 3:13-16: Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbour bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) Wisdom and understanding are shown in what you do, not in what you say. Hence the adage: Empty vessels make the most noise! Proverbs 20 offers the following wisdom: A gossip betrays a confidence; so avoid a man who talks too much (v. 19) and also: Do not say, ‘I’ll pay you back for this wrong!’ Wait for the Lord, and he will deliver you (v. 22). Jealousy and selfishness make us self-centred people who look down on others. James advises that it is better to speak less and rather focus more on a good life and deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. A new life in Christ increasingly strips us of our self-centredness. Guided by the Holy Spirit, let’s take the new living road that leads to life. Prayer: Heavenly Father, we still live a much too self-centred life. Teach us how to act that our deeds may speak of humility and wisdom. Amen Danie de Kock Emeritus

09.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Read Colossians 1:15-20: He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, ...so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) This is a truth that can make such a practical difference to us who live in a world where things can go wrong so quickly. ...in him all things hold together. This remains true, whether we like to admit it or not, for where He steps in, where He is recognised for who He is and worshipped as God who became Flesh, as the One who holds all things together there is meaning and purpose and hope even in the worst of circumstances. He and He alone unites the paradise that was and the new heaven and earth that are to come that we who see so little of it will not despair and give up. What is the glue you are using at the moment to prevent your life from falling apart? Money? Your carefully accumulated possessions? Your special skills and gifts? Your zeal for the church? Your moral record? Your freedom to live as you please? All of these are fake glue that will inevitably fail us in the end! Prayer: Lord Jesus, only You can hold life together. Only You can keep this life of sorrow, brokenness and unpredictability from tearing me apart. Open my eyes to how I seek sense and meaning in the wrong places and put my hope and trust in the wrong things. Forgive me. Come and take me over completely that You and You alone may become my only hope. Amen Thomas Dreyer

09.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Week’s theme: Write (The theme of write this week is applied to different contexts that are not necessarily related.) Today’s theme: What Jesus had written down for us in the Bible is trustworthy and true.... Read Revelation 21:5: He who was seated on the throne said, ‘I am making everything new!’ The he said, ‘Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.’ (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) The book of Revelation serves to comfort and encourage believers with the assurance that God continues to rule over everything and everyone until He ultimately makes everything new. We are simultaneously guided to the second coming of Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself commands: Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true. It has been recorded for us that we may see, believe and hold on to Jesus Christ. We who have received the privilege to believe have our names written in die book of life and it cannot be erased. Nothing and no one can snatch us out of Jesus Christ’s hand, because He preserves us. Beloved, Jesus made us new through His crucifixion and resurrection. Yes, in this time before the second coming of Jesus we still suffer hardship and the temptation of the devil, but we have the assurance that we are more than conquerors with Jesus Christ. Read what Revelation 21:5 says and believe it: I am making everything new! It is already now a reality and will come to full fulfilment when Jesus Christ comes again! Then our battle against sin and Satan will be over, completely. Prayer: Heavenly Father, confirm in my heart, soul, mind and spirit that what You give us in the Bible has been recorded for us as the only truth. Help me to believe all that is written there that I may hold on to my faith in You as Only true God. Also make me new today and use me in Your service. Amen= Joop van Schaik

08.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Read Proverbs 4:23: Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life. (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com)... What is in your heart today? Fear, rage, sorrow, selfishness, frustration, impatience, greed, jealousy, revenge, envy, all manner of desires, worries? If you allow it to continue to live in your heart, it will determine your behaviour and ultimately dominate your life. Bring it before the Lord today and seek the peace He gives in Jesus Christ. He came to die on the cross in our stead that nothing may separate us from God’s love. Remember this promise for whoever comes to Him: And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:7). Let this peace of a living relationship with God and His love live in your heart and have it guide your life, your conduct today, tomorrow and the day after! Prayer: Lord, I bring all the things in my heart that are not from You and lay it at Your feet. Change the way I think. Grant me Your peace in Jesus Christ and let it guard my heart and my mind. Let it guide my life today. Amen Thomas Dreyer

08.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Theme this week: Hope in a hopeless world Read Romans 15:1-13 focus verse Romans 15:12-13: And again, Isaiah says, ‘The Root of Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule over the nations; the Gentiles will hope in him.’ May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.... (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) What are we to do in this time of despair? This time in which some have no hope and others place their hope in the transient things of life? Will we despair over the future of our country, the church, the economy, the government, our own life? No, we are children of Hope, children of the God of hope, the God of patience and encouragement, the faithful, compassionate God who fulfilled His promises in Christ (Rom. 15:8-9). We will follow Him in faith, then He will fill us with joy and peace, making us overflow in hope through the powerful work of the Holy Spirit. It will bring glory to Him. Prayer: Lord, thank You that You have left so many people in this country who can still spread Your hope. Use our testimony of hope, peace and joy to bind together Your chosen from all the nations of this country. Amen Gert Breed

07.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Theme this week: We are called to be free in Jesus Today’s theme: Sin will make you a slave!... Read Galatians 5:13: For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. (Bible online available at www.biblegateway.com) A great movie was made about William Wallace, played by Mel Gibson, in Braveheart. His dying words, while being tortured, was not submission to the King of England, but freedom - freedom for Scotland, freedom for his people. Are we in a Scotland situation today with all the rules and regulations associated with the Covid-19 pandemic? Have we become slaves of our own desires, frustrations and sin? Is this why the rate of social injustice is so extremely high in our country? Have we become slaves of sin and forgotten about the Christian principles our country was found upon? Jesus said in John 8:34: Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.’ A person who is a slave of sin cannot have a sensible relationship. He or she will use people for personal benefit and all the broken people and hearts left behind will be a testimony of his or her selfishness. This is our misery. We, who were created to love as God required from us, are selfish. This is the opposite of what we should be and therefore we are slaves of sin. In contrast, Jesus says that there is only one law and it is love: love for God and love toward the neighbour. The Spirit enables us to love God above all and our neighbours as ourselves through the redeeming work of Jesus who freed us from sin (Rom. 5:5). Jesus is the answer to becoming free! We are assured in the above passage that we are free in Jesus, free in Christ, and no-one can take our peace and freedom away! Prayer: Lord, open our eyes to see that Jesus will make us free. Amen Lourens Nel [email protected]

07.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Theme this week: The new normal anchored in die old! Read Hebrews 10:35-36: So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.... (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) Keeping the faith in hardship has never been easy - not before and perhaps even less so in uncertain times as with the Corona virus. The Lord still teaches, as He always has, how to keep on hoping in these times. He teaches us to first look back: as the Hebrew church struggled when they became Christians... but still stood firm; thus the Lord encourages us to look back on our past and reflect on how He kept us standing (think of personal events/times). Then He teaches us to, in the present, prayerfully look up... and not forfeit our confidence in the Lord. Our history after all shows that it works! He then proceeds to teaches us to look forward: It holds great reward - not based on merit, but (lit.) reward as gift. You will only be able to persevere if you look back, look up and look forward! This is normal. Prayer: Thank You, Lord, for the confidence You give. Teach me to, as in the past, live in faith today and tomorrow. Amen Charl van Rooy

06.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Read Proverbs 16:26: The labourer’s appetite works for him; his hunger drives him on. (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com)... Another week over and I have yet again read my Bible and prayed too little, spent too little time with the Lord! How many times have you said this, determined to do better next week? What is the problem? I have time for all the other things so important to me! I picked up on something in this Proverbs verse. Trying harder doesn’t solve the problem, because the problem is my lack of true spiritual hunger. The appetite for true spiritual nourishment is absent. I don’t yearn for the Lord’s presence, for fellowship with Him, as a deer pants for water. If I did, I wouldn’t struggle to find time. It is after all the labourer’s hunger that makes him work. His need for food drives him. Pray with me this morning: Lord, I yearn to pray with the writer of Psalm 42, As the heart longs for streams of water, so O God, I long for Thee!, but it would be a lie. How I spend my time and lead my life do not reflect this thirst and hunger for You. Thank You that I may live in relationship with You because of what Jesus did. Work inside met through the Holy Spirit and give me a true hunger and thirst again for You and a personal intimate relationship with You. Amen Thomas Dreyer

05.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Theme this week: A living community of faith! Read Acts 2:14, 37: Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowdWhen the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’... (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) How did the first church of 3000 members come to experience this koinonia? Clearly they did not consider it an optional extra they could take or leave. Neither were they threatened or forced into it. No, a former fisherman with no training in public speaking, started to preach - guided by the Spirit. The main message is: God made the crucified Jesus Lord (King) and Christ that fulfils God’s plan of salvation with us. It’s this message with which the Spirit deeply cuts to the heart of believers and changes them. The most precious possession of the church is the living Word of God! The strongest appeal of the church is the preaching of the redemption of our Lord and Christ! The church is not an entertainment centre and the minister a concert organiser (or artist)... It’s the workplace of the Spirit, through His Word! Prayer: O Holy Spirit, please move me anew with the message of Jesus, my King and Saviour. Amen Charl van Rooy

04.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Theme this week: The new normal anchored in die old! Read Psalm 18:28-29: You, O Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light. With your help I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall.... (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com) The so-called new normal has become a common expression these days How it relates to our spiritual and emotional life is perhaps not so new. People have always tended to react to their (difficult) circumstances in one of two ways: The first is with pessimism which only sees the dark side of life, usually expecting the worst possible scenario, which leads to anxiety, depression and despair. The second reaction is optimism, which only sees the positive in life and deals with crises with the attitude: It will all work out, just stay positive. Both lead to misery: The pessimist doesn’t see the light side of life. The optimist in turn forgets that life is not perfect (yet), it is still very broken, evil and difficult. The answer is not found somewhere in between pessimism and optimism - the proverbial hoping for the best. It is (still!) found in the Biblical hope, as David confesses above! (Tomorrow we continue this conversation.) Prayer: Lord, sometimes I come to the end of my rope. Fill me with Biblical hope. Amen Charl van Rooy

02.01.2022 THE LORD'S MESSAGE FOR TODAY Read Proverbs 14:12: There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. (The Bible is available online at www.biblegateway.com)... It is so important to regularly reflect and ask: Am I on God’s path for my life or on my own? I am on my own path when I say: I will win God’s and man’s favour on my own; I will decide what is truth and what is not; and I will bring about my joy in life myself. Being on God’s path is believing in Jesus, because as He says: I am the way and the truth and the life (John 14:6). He is the only way or path back to God. He is the truth. In Him, the living Word, God reveals Himself to us. He is the life. If we don’t know Him, we will never truly live and experience true joy in life. Are you on God’s path or on a path that seems right to you? Then turn around and get back on God’s path! Prayer: Lord, open our eyes to see the foolishness and ultimate end of our own paths. Open our eyes to see, recognise and confess Jesus as the Way and the Truth and the Life! Amen Thomas Dreyer
