21.01.2022 Winter cold and snow on high ground. Many snails are stuck together to keep warm! A little bit of grazing still happening on sunny days. Their metabolic rate has dropped considerably and they are sealed off and sticking like glue to various substrates. They will hibernate for around three months until days are longer and starting to warm up, then begin to move and feed after which mating will take place then eggs are laid in the soil. Babies will continue to grow. Snails are both male and female at the same time ( Hermaphrodite).

21.01.2022 Snails starting to go quiet and not eating much due to cold nights! We have been sending sample lots and batches to a number of restaurants around Australia and running out of good sized snails. However we have been told that the smaller snails are very tasty. Feeding on only vegetation is good for meat texture although growth rates are slower compared wiith using man made food mixtures.O Brassica plants are growing well into winter but it has been extremely dry in SE Tasmania wirh no good rain for months! Still no rain in May! Only a small amount of feed being eaten. Sunny during the day and fairly warm but cold nights. Watering every few days.

13.01.2022 Our snails prepared for a private birthday function. Thanks to Steve McCusker for the photo

13.01.2022 Since November our livestock have not been slow in mating and later laying eggs in the soil. It is difficult to imagine snails burrowing down some centimetres and laying eggs bigger than caviar., a few hundred at a time. Some snails die after this from exhaustion. Cute tiny babies have been emerging since January. This means our system is working well. We have begun selling our larger snails although mating is still occurring, especially after rain and heavy spraying. Stil...l working on filling the pens with sutable plants. At this time we supplement with fresh leaves and veg donated to us for free by Tasmanian business ' Fresh Cut ' Emmanuel Kiris his family and workers are a grear support to us. Still trialling organic sprays for getting rid of grasshoppers! Hydrophilic soil has been a big problem which we are now overcoming. A small number of mice still get into our pens.
