24.01.2022 A few people have asked how the river is flowing further downstream. I have just come off the phone with Ace Clifton at the Wilcannia Roadhouse who tells me that the flow is great down there. You can hear a guarded optimism in his voice, it’s over the weir but still only half full.. so we mustn’t get too carried away. Flows through Louth and Tilpa are looking good. Two of the three Menindee Lakes are filling; Menindee Lake itself is still empty, so there’s a bit of a way to... go .. but there are celebrations happening in Menindee in May. Wonderful, wonderful news. The pics below are all taken at Brewarrina. If you have any you’d like to share of further downstream, please stick ‘em in the comments Why did the fish blush?? Because he saw the rivers bottom

23.01.2022 So, she finally peaked, we think! But we’re not certain, because she does seem to keep doing her own thing. However she’s been at 7.13 over the weekend and steady thereabouts, so it looks like this is as high as it’s gonna get. There’s a footpath between town and a small community west of Brewarrina, affectionately named Dodge City. More recently known as Essie Coffey’s Village. Well, there used to be a footpath... it’s kinda covered at the moment. ... I was there taking photos at dusk.

22.01.2022 Crikey! was my first thought having not seen Our Barwon yesterday evening.. Wow! The SES guys are in town - they assured me it’s all safe, although of course we never ‘know for certain, at the moment it looks like we’ll be classed as minor flood and it’ll be business as usual. The kids were at the edge of the water this evening, with buckets and nets and rakes, pulling out booglies for dinner and to use as bait. They hide under rocks (the booglies, not the children) in the r...iver bank during the dry weather, apparently for years if necessary until the water comes, and then out they come. ‘When we see the river run we come and get them’ says little Eljo The sun is going down beautifully. I look forward to seeing it rise tomorrow. 6.22 and rising. Expected to reach 7 metres on Thursday.

22.01.2022 Lots of birds under the Billabong Bridge this morning; pelicans, spoonbills, a crane and a stunning wedge tailed eagle. The frog life out there is very loud; you feel like you’re in an immersive croaky experience. The water is flowing, and by the look of the feasting that was happening, it’s full of small fish. A friend took me out to see The Cato, which is extraordinary.. the water is everywhere. I think I jumped up and down with excitement. At 1pm, the Barwon at Brewarrina... was at 6.93 and steady. Today is supposed to be the peak, so we’ll see. Sally Ross

21.01.2022 The gates of Menindee Weir have been opened and the water is flowing into Lake Menindee.

14.01.2022 She keeps on Gettin’ Higher.. I’m a little overwhelmed this morning. The sheer power of this thing lends itself to the occasional moment of terror. Although I have been told to enjoy it because it is not very often that this happens, I am still a newbie in town and inexperienced in these matters. The Bureau of Meteorology updates its predictions every day and many of the flows are now steadying, whereas before they were rising. We were at 5.23 metres yesterday and I expect it’s a bit higher than that this morning. Still expected to peak at 7 metres towards the end of April.

10.01.2022 Flashback to February 20th 2020. The first time water came over the weir in as great a way as it did for seven years. I watched and participated as this tiny town called Brewarrina a came to life. Kids caught fish with their bare hands, spirits soared, life came back. It became a daily ritual for many to drive down to the weir car park and watch the flow, or maybe listen. An appreciation for water, a deep reverence for the stuff, is here. In Sydney, this city girl would just... turn on a tap and out it would come. Ponder that for a second. Today. Well we know the story. She hasn’t peaked yet, lol. I guess she changed her mind. Still going this morning at 7.03m and steady. Here’s a link to the BOM stats if you want to follow the flow all the way down to Menindee. http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDN60148.html

10.01.2022 It’s all kicking off here..

10.01.2022 A digression from the river. I wanted to capture joy. I wondered if it was possible and a couple of days later I noticed it in front of me, in the form of butterflies dancing around my bottlebrush tree. I put my camera on sports mode and took many photos over a period of days. I remembered being a young mum and going to the cinema with my son’s school class to see a 3D movie about nature - you know, the movies where the visuals come out of the screen? When the butterflies c...ame, many, many tiny hands went up from the audience trying to grab them. It was a memory that arrived on that day, as I wanted to do the same thing.

06.01.2022 Sexy sunset shots tonight and an introduction to silhouette photography with Stephen Wilson Barker, part of the Festival of the Fishtraps team. You make a beautiful silhouette Mr Wilson Barker!

04.01.2022 Ok... tomorrow she peaks at 6.90. Today she’s at 6.73. It’s been an extraordinary journey over these last few weeks, watching this unfold. The impact on the landscape over the winter months will be, equally as wonderful to watch, I’m sure. I’m not too sure what’s happening downstream. If anyone wants to share some pics, please do. #maytheriverflow

02.01.2022 How Oft’ do we let Tears Flow? Perhaps, if we grieved, our rivers would run deeper, for longer Perhaps, if we wept, we’d find Joy and perhaps, if it rained, there’d be thunder... And it maketh no difference for girl or for boy There are moments a’plenty, for laughter and for playfulness, gay repartee and companionship, happy e’er after And a river, that runs through the trees

01.01.2022 Some of the dancers from tonight’s Baiame’s Ngunnhu (Festival of the Fisheries). Thank you Milan Dhiiyaan and some of the members of our own Waroowagiegirri. Mel Kirby, you were wonderful - so eloquent, Lily Shearer, what a beautiful way to go, and Vivian Slack-Smith, awesome speech. And what a great celebration of the Barwon at a most beautiful time. Haven’t seen times like this for ten years. ... Congrats Belinda Boney, looking forward to next year.
