25.01.2022 Rain! We had a nice dose of semi heavy rainfall and drizzle for a couple of hours across the Larapinta Trail last night and very early this morning. Hikers are also reporting getting drenched and hammered by some strong winds everywhere from the High Route on Section 3 to Mt Giles near Ormiston Gorge. Some more rain expected today and tomorrow but we'll see how that goes.

24.01.2022 Heat-Related Safety Tips When Bushwalking in the NT ( or anywhere else): Beat The Heat: A great short vid from NT Parks and Wildlife (not filmed on the Larapinta Trail but excellent info and relevant to any walking in the heat)

22.01.2022 New Food Drop Rules: No more BYO Containers: Parks and Wildlife NT has introduced a new rule about food drop containers for commercial companies offering food drops and self supporting hikers doing their own. If you are using a licensed company to do food drops, you now can't use your own BYO containers, the containers must be provided by the company and to certain specs and conditions. The same specs and conditions will apply to hikers doing their own food drops with their o...wn vehicles. We guesstimate with reasonably accuracy, the main reason for this new rule is because of space issues and the incredible amount of dumped BYO containers, bags, boxes etc or left behind (often with rubbish inside the containers or strewn everywhere) at food drops. The Rangers are then responsible for cleaning this mess on a regular and sometimes daily basis which is unfair given the hard work they do out there for Larapinta Trail walkers. Respective commercial companies will be required to collect their customers used food drop containers they provided as part of the service. Stay tuned for more info about the new food drop container rules and specs. See more

13.01.2022 Trail Signage and Distances: An enduring frustration for many hikers each season is the trail signage with distances on the top right corner of some markers (See pic). Each and every year we hear from frustrated, amused and/or entertained hikers about just how inaccurate and plain misleading the distances are (read some of the comments in the logbooks!). And yes, more than 60% of the distances on the trail markers are inaccurate. On the image attached, you can see both sides ...of the newish marker indicate 11km to each respective trailhead, when in fact one trailhead is less than 4km away and the other less than 9km away. Many of these distance markers haven't been updated or corrected for a very long time even though brand new markers with inaccurate distances mysteriously keep appearing on the trail every year or so. We are not sure why other than to advise hikers to not heavily rely on the distances on the trail markers too much (until we post otherwise) and instead rely on your trek planning data, pacing and map reading skills instead. So next time you see the marker suggest the trailhead is only 2km away and instead you walk another extra 5km and get all flustered, just remember you were warned! Happy trekking! See more

12.01.2022 Micro Blog: A great snapshot from two experienced lightweight trekkers who just completed the Larapinta Trail.

11.01.2022 Larapinta Trail 2020 Season is Starting Soon! There is a lot of news and craziness about Coronavirus (COVID-19) at the moment and its effects on people, events, the economy and business. We have been receiving enquiries about what this means in Central Australia and treks on the Larapinta Trail. Well, we're wrapped to say that here in Central Australia, it is business as usual. The Larapinta Trail and the Tjortija/West MacDonnell National Park is OPEN. NT Park Rangers are wor...king hard to get the trail ready for 2020. Local services in Alice Springs (shops, accommodation, local government, medical facilities etc.) are all operating as per normal. Services for the Larapinta Trail ( tours, transfers, accommodation, flights etc) are all getting ready for the 2020 season and pumped for visitors and hikers to the region. The weather has been awesome too and we've had some great saturating days of rain. The trail is greening up too! Overall the 2020 season looks like being a fantastic one. If heaps of people don't turn up, well, we'll just have to look on the bright side, those that do turn up will have the trail to themselves and a lot service providers will be ready to pile on some great service and hospitality, minus perhaps handshakes! See you all soon! See more
