23.01.2022 Creating a healthy home Asthma is one of the most widespread and little understood diseases in Australia its cause is not known and there is no cure. However, it can be treated and its effects mitigated by designing and maintaining homes which keep allergens to a minimum. Allergens are substances that are in the air and produce an allergic reaction to asthma-prone individuals. In the home, allergens can come from a range of sources from skin or hair shed by the family pet... to the type of soap used in the bathroom. But the most significant source is usually dust and the mites that breed there. Allergens are harboured in carpets or other fabrics, so if asthma is a problem for you or your family, consider the following options to minimise the problem. Use smooth, hard floor finishes such as timber or cork. Dust mites cannot breed there and they are generally easier to keep clear of dust. If you do have carpets, choose short pile synthetic fibre with a rubber underlay and have them regularly steam cleaned. Follow this up with a vacuum cleaner that has a filtration system that does not spread allergens through the air. Electricity is considered the best form of heating for asthma sufferers, largely because it has no naked flame requiring oxygen so does not set up draughts that can stir allergens into the air. Condensation is inevitable in most homes and occurs wherever there are significant variations in temperature. It is generally not harmful unless it continues for long periods, promoting the growth of mould, mites and bacteria. Simple measures may help, such as keeping the lids on pans while cooking, drying clothes out on the line rather than inside the home, and making sure steam from the bathroom does not drift into the rest of the home. Additional precautions can be taken with the installation of extractor fans in high moisture areas such as bathrooms, the kitchen and laundry and the placement of north facing windows for light and ventilation. 21.01.2022 Loving the designs of Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter in Norway. These Micro Cluster Cabins have been built in Vestfold, Norway. Toward the northeast, a hill borders and defines the site, together with the view in the opposite direction. The spatial interaction between landscape and the structure creates a beneficial microclimate. This is reflected by the structures southwest orientation, where the gable end is glazed. In the other directions the buildings appear more closed. Copyright 2016 Specifier Magazine.

14.01.2022 The Chanel Mobile Art Pavillion. The Chanel Mobile Art Pavilion was built to tour the world to act as a venue for art exhibitions. Designed by the renowned architect Zaha Hadid, it had to be capable of being repeatedly erected and taken down and transported around the globe, and at the same time offer a comfortable environment for visitors whatever the climatic conditions. The flowing lines of the building reflected Chanels unstructured approach to designing garments, with h...er hallmark feature of quilting being echoed on the polycarbonate shell outer surface. The interior was made from fabric and exactly reflected this curvature, with no two panels being the same. It was made by Architen Landrell, who have vast experience in fabricating such curving tensile elements. This presented a big challenge for designing the insulation, which had to fit exactly in between the curved layers. In keeping with Chanels concept of having a quilted layer between the outer and inner layers of her iconic jackets, TLX Silver was chosen because, it was not only flexible, having a polyester core, but its reflective outer surfaces of sufficient tensile strength meant that it could be cut and shaped to conform to the curves over wide spans. Architen Landrell pushed the boundaries of what was possible in terms of shaping TLX Silver, by actually joining sections together with sewn seams a hi-tech large-scale version of the pattern-drafting and fabric manipulation techniques used by Chanel herself. The couture insulation provided by TLX Silver meant that visitors to the Pavilion in Tokyo, New York, London, Moscow and Paris didnt have to suffer for their art! http://www.ecoshowcase.co.uk//tlx-silver-has-the-chanel-m/

12.01.2022 These are the latest designs in fireplaces stocked by the Australian company Oblica. One of their most popular brands (and the inventor of the suspended fireplace), Focus, have added another fireplace to their already formidable range. The Slimfocus, designed by acclaimed practitioner Dominique Imbert, is a real showstopper, suspended from the ceiling and referencing mid-century glamour while making a bold, modern statement in any space. There is truly nothing like it. Its p...erfect for smaller areas, heating beautifully and creating a strong impact with its chic tubular shape, rotating hearth and arresting matte black finish. Slimfocus has already been hailed as a future classic by the industry, wowing design critics in its home country of France and at the Progetto Fuoco exhibition in Verona, Italy. Slimfocus will be added to Oblicas showroom as soon as it becomes available in Australia later in the year. [email protected]

04.01.2022 Spring is here. Time to get out into the garden and get new plants established before the heat of summer arrives. Logan City Council have supplied the benefits of planting native plants http://www.logan.qld.gov.au//plants-and-trees/native-plants Native plants play a large role in maintaining the biodiversity of both flora and fauna in Australia. Some of the many benefits associated with planting native species include: Plants that grow naturally in your local area will be ...well adapted to the local soil and climatic conditions of the area hence they will often grow where nothing else will (e.g. boggy areas). Some native plants have well developed root systems and so can assist in stabilising soil. Native plants will also be able to tolerate local climatic extremes such as frost or periodic drought. Native species of plants will provide the right habitat and food for native animals, birds and insect populations. They will often grow faster and hardier than exotic species and be less susceptible to local pests and diseases. They provide shade and can help modify local temperature extremes. Native plants are easily established and maintained. They will not develop into an ongoing weed problem like some exotic plants. The habitat values of native plants Native plants provide crucial habitat for many species of Australian animals such as birds and arboreal mammals. Over 50 species of birds (owls, parrots etc) and over 95 species of mammals utilise tree hollows for shelter and safety. While hollow formation in eucalypts can begin from a young age, recent evidence has shown that hollows suitable for vertebrate fauna (birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians) do not occur before the age of 120-180 years. Large hollows will take at least 220 years. Dead and fallen trees also play a vital role in providing habitat for animals as well as maintaining forest and woodland nutrient cycles. The removal of dead wood for firewood can have a significant impact on wildlife and ecosystem function.
