21.01.2022 Making ‘student life better’ for every enrolled student at La Trobe University La Trobe Student Association Ltd. (LTSA) is excited to announce that in a year ma...rked by so many challenges, we have endured and overcome much adversity and collaboratively created a strong and united student association for every enrolled student at La Trobe University (LTU). From January 2021, LTSA will be located on all six campuses at LTU providing Student Services and Amenities Fees (SSAF) funded support services previously offered by the Bendigo Student Association, La Trobe Student Union, Mildura Student Association, Shepparton Student Association and Wodonga Student Association. Leveraging off valuable lessons learnt during COVID-19, LTSA will also be extending our support to those students studying in the virtual lecture halls of LTU. Whether on campus or on-line, LTSA exists to ‘make student life better’. Our focus is to retain an integral independent student representative voice. LTSA has the capacity to provide professional and passionate student representation across the entire University. Our student representative structure gives equal voice to every campus, including international student representation and has been designed to incorporate any future cloud-based student cohorts. A critical component to the success of any student association, is ensuring that students have a united voice. For the first time in LTU Student Association history, this has been achieved. LTSA is governed by an elected student Governing Board of Directors, allowing every student on every campus to have an equal voice and equal vote. Our foundational Constitution promotes an apolitical culture and fosters strong collaboration and genuine partnership with LTU to achieve outstanding student engagement. We also recognise the core role that activism plays within any successful student association and shall advocate for student rights. To ensure that students have access to the essential services of advocacy, financial counselling, legal advice, clubs and societies, events and well-being activities, LTSA will have a dedicated and enthusiastic team working for all students. SSAF funding allocated to LTSA will assist us to offer exceptional, professional, engaging, fun, diverse and equitable support to all students. We are passionate about student life and recognise the need to invest student money back into our students. Through prudent and transparent management and accountability of SSAF funding, we will establish a foundation for the delivery of robust, sustainable and efficient services and support. We recognise that SSAF funding is finite and understand our responsibilities to support all students through SSAF. LTSA Ltd. is governed by students for students, is funded by student SSAF money, and exists to ‘make student life better’. We head towards 2021 united together with optimism and determination as we build a trusted, fun, professional, engaging and connected student association for the student community of LTU for decades to come. William Griffin, Board Director Annabelle Romano, Board Director Jenna Boyd, Board Director To stay in the loop about what we have planned for 2021 join our mailing list: https://mailchi.mp/.../la-trobe-student-association-ltsa...

17.01.2022 Stigma, injustice, and misery: La Trobe history students shine a light on the struggles of early settler women, striving for a better life in the Shepparton district. The study, based on late 19th century court records and newspaper reports, reveals the tough lives of working class women and girls, trying to access justice under the double yoke of sexual assault and a male-dominated legal system. It meant I knew what my future held in terms of study. We recognise students as more than just a number, offering those with standout community and volunteer experience a place to study. Successful applicants not only secure a place in their preferred course but also receive exclusive access to support programs, industry connections and networking opportunities while attending uni.

14.01.2022 When it comes to aging, we place a lot of importance on maintaining our physical health. But are you paying enough attention to the importance of social connections and active listening? Shepparton-based entrepreneurs Danny Finley and Eva Gruen wanted to tackle the issue of loneliness and social isolation through their 'I Wish I'd Asked' campaign. They received seed funding from La Trobe University’s Accelerator Program to support an initiative that uses inter-generational ...exchange to unite young people and seniors through conversation and skill-sharing activities. 'Bringing diverse age groups together benefits all generations. It’s been a wonderful experience to see students (who we refer to as ‘Apprentices’), and seniors (‘Silver Warriors’) develop rapport with each other,' says Danny. Key to the program is bringing back the lost art of listening. Young people are taught interviewing skills and are challenged to communicate outside of social media, swapping stories with older people face-to-face. In return, older generations have the chance to share their wisdom and life experience and be heard. 'There’s a lot to be said for learning to listen. One thing we’ve noticed with the Silver Warriors is how much they enjoy being listened to, even when they often repeat the same story,' says Danny. 'Being able to communicate in life is paramount, no matter your age.' The program has shown that conversations really do create connections. Seniors who joined the program reported feeling happier and more secure, content and confident. And the young people have been shown valuable examples of what it’s like to age well. 'We’re all destined to be older,' says Danny. 'Learn early that being focused and occupied will be an asset all through life. And understand that respect and empathy for others makes the inevitability of ageing so much easier.' If you’re keen to practice and master your listening skills, start your journey with Psychology and Counselling at La Trobe: https://now.latrobe/3stnuif

05.01.2022 Tanesha Christopher grew up in Shepparton and attended Notre Dame College. When the time came to decide what to do next, Tanesha had her heart set on studying accounting at our Shepp campus. Accounting has an expansive industry network across a broad range of sectors that enables you to explore and discover the dynamics between accounting and the workplace. This motivated me in applying for business (accounting). The decision to study locally was easy for Tanesha. She love...d the fact that she already knew Shepparton and was able to stay connected with family and friends, as well as continue to play netball for the Undera Football Netball Club. Being able to complete my degree locally meant that I had support from all of my family, friends, and colleagues. They were with me the whole way through which was irreplaceable during my degree. With the support of La Trobe, Tanesha was also able to find part-time employment in the industry whilst studying her degree, which provided her with invaluable experience. La Trobe works with many businesses in the GV to help employ their students, and they provide a huge amount of support for students wanting assistance with job applications and interview advice. This is Tanesha’s last year at La Trobe. She is looking forward to 2021 where she will be employed in a full-time position as a graduate accountant at Stubbs Wallace accounting firm.
