20.01.2022 Hi everyone! We are pleased to announce the first collection of CD's has been a success. Pick-up of the collection box in the Launceston state library yielded approx. 8 kilos of CD/DVDs and cases. This equated to roughly 400 discs that instead of heading to landfill have been sent to Gram Destruction in Melbourne, who granulate the discs and separate the aluminium and polycarbonate for recycling into new products. Their website claims that much is used in automotive headlight... covers. A recent check of the box in the Newnham UTAS library reveals it is also nearly full. The cost to send 8kilo was roughly $35. We would like to promote that the UTAS library also has battery and mobile phone collection containers. We must also convey, in answer to queries, unfortunately Gram Destruction does not accept audio or video cassette tapes. If anyone has any suggestions for these please get in touch with us. Now we are established the plan is to increase collection points (suggestions please) or negotiate with Northern Waste Management to install a disc collection crate at the Mowbray transfer station. Congratulations to them for their e-waste and fluorescent light tube drop-off crates. Thanks ! See more

18.01.2022 Hi friends, The LEC is proud to announce that CD recycling is now possible in Launceston. Through a partnership with the Sustainability wing of UTAS, a collection drop box is now available in the UTAS library. We also have a box installed in the State Library in Civic Square. Just ask the desk staff as to the where-abouts of its location. Broken or whole CDs, DVDs, CD-Rs, CD-RWs, Jewel cases and paper inserts are all able to be dropped off. Once a full box is achieved, they w...ill be posted to Melbourne to a company who salvage the materials (paper, aluminium, polycarbonate) and on-sell them to companys who can use these materials. Much goes into components for the automotive industry. So instead of throwing them in the bin, please collect a few and bring them to the collection points. Also please spread the word so others know they are there. Thanks very much! See more

16.01.2022 The CD recycling project began as an idea from a single member and funds for posting the CDs will come from funding that the LEC can draw down and from membership fees. If you, or anyone you know has ideas for environmental or sustainability projects, please consider first becoming an LEC member and coming down to our office in Tamar street to discuss your ideas. We just might be able to assist you in making it happen or providing resources or contacts of people to assist. Do...n't forget our organisation depends on active members to make these kinds of projects possible! Thank you!
