23.01.2022 For 35 years the midwives of the Launceston Birth Centre have served the local community with love. Many families have felt supported by these beautiful midwives as they welcomed new babies into their lives and new mothers into the community. Three years ago the climate for independent midwifery changed in our nation, requiring those midwives who wanted to practice in a homebirth setting to undertake further study to become an endorsed midwife and abide by new and ever changi...Continue reading

14.01.2022 Thankyou to Gordon Willcock from Direct Relief here in Australia who donated N95 masks to all the privately practising midwives in Australia facilitating homebirth. I enjoyed facilitating this initiative with Gordon and with the much needed help of three other women we got the masks out there to all the midwives facilitating Homebirths at this time. Amazing what networking, cooperation and love can do. And all totally free of charge and delivered to the doorstep. Thank you

14.01.2022 With only a few weeks until we officially reopen work is progressing well with our renovation inside the birth centre! Everything feels so fresh!

13.01.2022 "Breastfeeding is about so much more than food. So much so, that I often wish we could rename it! Breastnurturing seems a fitting term. Many mothers I meet beco...me quite consumed with how much their baby is feeding. Worrying that they cant have enough milk, that their baby is taking too much milk, their baby is just feeding for comfort or making bad sleep associations. The truth is that your baby will go to your breast for countless reasons. Milk is just one of them. Breastfeeding to comfort your baby, promote sleep and to connect are all important and normal reasons for your baby to be at your breast, along with meeting their requirements for milk. As a mother breastfeeds, it really does look something like this. Those amazing hormones that flood her brain also impact on the brain of her baby, enhancing and nurturing the bond between mother and child. Nutrition, Bonding, Immunity, Attachment, Safety, Responsive, Nurturing, Love. 13.01.2022 We have some exciting news... as you are aware we announced our doors were closing a few months ago. This announcement sparked a media frenzy and over 20,000 people saw the post. Through all the exposure a lovely midwife named Emma (pictured in the middle) contacted us.. long story short, she is COMING, although she has a busy home birth practice in Victoria, to work here in order to ensure our birth centre doesnt have to close. We all loved her straight away and cant wait ...for you to meet her. We were also contacted by Minister Michael Ferguson who has been working hard behind the scenes to secure a very generous amount of money from the federal government that will be used to upgrade the centre with a new kitchen, flooring, heating and a big deck out the back so we can host prenatal classes etc. We have had to pinch ourselves with all this excitement and its all hands on deck to launch into a brand new future for the birth centre. Thank you so much for all your messages, emails and support. Please spread the word that we are open for births and will continue to provide this much needed choice for pregnant women in Northern Tasmania. See more

10.01.2022 Hi everyone, we just had an interview on ABC RADIO 91.7fm about the LBC re opening and they are asking people to call to share their own stories and how important the birth centre is. Please call 1300361688 in the next half hour if you have a spare minute to share your story!

10.01.2022 As soon as I stood, things began to intensify. I was standing in the doorway to our bedroom, holding the door frame and starting to make deep moaning noises, bo...th Ben and I thought Gees, that is way too early to be making those noises!, but I needed to make them so I continued. At that point I was very thankful for the heavy rain masking my noise and not waking Juniper. I checked myself in the mirror and realised I was as white as a ghost and shaking. I asked Ben to get up with me and try to lie on the couch while I rested. It was 3am by this point and we thought we were nowhere near the finish line. I couldnt understand why my body wanted me to get up and not be lying down. Eventually I said I need to get this baby down. Ben agreed, he helped me up and gave me a banana as well as some pre-birth arnica and some home-made labour aid to boost my energy. It was a relief to stand but it also made things intensify again. At this point I was needing Ben to press on the acupressure points on my lower back and the pain relief was instant! I had also tried the bath but I couldnt handle the lower pressure and was making the tightenings very close together. I still had no thought that this baby was going to arrive any time soon, I was thinking it was going to be another day or two away! 09.01.2022 The renovation of the living area and kitchen at the Birth Centre is finally complete thanks to our federal government grant and we are so excited to show you the finished areas! We took out the wall to a small side bedroom to make a big living area and updated the kitchen. With the new paint, flooring, joinery and heating, I am sure you will all agree it looks fabulous! The rest of the house has had a fresh coat of paint and many extra touches which we will show you soon. All completed just in time for the arrival of our new midwife Emma - WELCOME EMMA!!

05.01.2022 IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT The N95 masks that have been donated to privately practising midwives by Direct Relief with the exhalation valve on the side protect the wearer not others. The N95 mask without the exhalation valve apparently protects both the wearer and others. Check out the info below regarding the N95 masks without the exhalation valve. These masks can be bought through the link below.

03.01.2022 Hello to our wonderful supporters. As you know, the Launceston Birth Centre has recently announced that we are able to continue our amazing service of providing a "home away from home" birth experience for the families of Northern Tasmania. We have received a fantastic grant of money to do a renovation and extension of the birth centre, however due to the lack of an endorsed midwife over the last year our funds for paying weekly bills have been completely exhausted. We normal...ly would have a fundraising dinner each year to cover our basic running costs and this year we werent able to host one due to the possibility of closing our doors. Now our doors are well and truly open and we are excited about the future with a new endorsed midwife joining with us. We ask that you would consider a donation, no matter how small to help us with our weekly running costs for this year. Every bit helps and enables us to keep providing this birthing choice to Northern Tasmanian families. Thank you! See more

03.01.2022 Got a wonderful parcel in the mail yesterday. Thanks so much to #directrelief for providing myself and all the private midwives facilitating Homebirth around Au...stralia with N95 masks. These masks will help to keep us and those we care for safe during this COVID-19 pandemic and allow us to continue to provide safe women centred, continuity of care to the drastically increasing numbers of women choosing to #stayhome to birth. Personal protective equipment is already in short supply across Australia and midwives, particularly those of us who work in private practice have been overlooked by governments in their orders. Anyway, Im feeling richer than ever today thanks to this generous donation and all the efforts by #homebirthaustralia #midwifecollective #yarravalleymidwives and #emmaryder at #launcestonbirthcentre See more
