25.01.2022 If you were to pursue the ultimate cliché of homelessness it would be the image of the white middle aged man with a self-medication issue. Sadly, there are so many people missed in that narrow point of view, and the makeup of the homeless community is as diverse as the makeup of Australia, and is often made up more so from the vulnerable and minorities precisely because they are more vulnerable and likely to experience traumas related specifically to their situation. Akemi, Lived Experience Advisory Group member. #homelessness #community #stereotypes #housing

24.01.2022 After the announcement of JobMaker for younger Australians, many older #Australians are frustrated by the lack of additional support and are struggling to find work. People like Rosie, a 47-year-old single mum with two daughters, lost her job after COVID-19 hit and students were forced into remote learning. "Basically, I was working, coronavirus came, stopped work, bills started to catch up, the money that I had saved just got eaten away through not having work. https://bit....ly/34XAGSO #jobmaker #housingcrisis #lockdown #covid19

23.01.2022 Why do young people experience homelessness? Often the main reasons young people become homeless is due to a housing crisis, domestic and family violence and a relationship or family breakdown. Did you know that young women aged 15-24 have the highest rate of assistance from homelessness services, like ours? ... Sadly, domestic and family violence and sexual assault are the main reasons young women need #housingsupport and care. #youthhomelessness #MelbourneZero

23.01.2022 Tomorrow is #YHMD2021 , a time to raise awareness and start conversations about youth homelessness in Australia. As a society we need to invest in more social housing and service supports to help vulnerable young people to lead more fulfilling lives. Did you know 28,000 young people (aged 12-24) experience #homelessness on any given night in Australia?

22.01.2022 Growing up I had a vision of what my life would be. Becoming a young mum at 16, I imagined this beautiful ‘normal’ life for myself and my child. Never did I imagine that homelessness was in our future. Myth #1: Homelessness is for men in their 30s, 40s and 50s who would rather spend their money on drugs and alcohol than on housing and bills. Right? I wasn’t one of those people so surely homelessness wasn’t something I needed to worry about. WRONG!... Homelessness can happen to anyone. My first experience of homelessness was when I was just a 14 year old girl..." In this guest blog Sharni, a member of our Lived Experience Advisory Group, discusses three common myths about #homelessness. 22.01.2022 Homelessness is not a choice. No one ever intended to put themselves through such horrors one has to come to the place where you’re #homeless. It's a road paved with event's entirely out of your control, and not on basis of weakness, but on basis of being overwhelmed by the situation, be it domestic violence, grief, a health crisis, or a whole host of other things, at levels where the idea of resilience in the face of events is merely cute. - Akemi, Lived Experience Advisory Group member. #homelessness #community #melbourne

21.01.2022 In 2018-19, among the 50,823 people assisted by Victoria’s homelessness services after fleeing family and domestic violence, an alarming 78% were female that’s 39,647 women and girls. #Familyviolence is the main reason women and children have to leave home in Victoria. It affects people from all ages, and backgrounds and the lack of safe, affordable housing is an urgent and critical issue. That’s why we’re joining the #WAFV2020 to raise awareness and send a collective message that violence is never okay. Walk with us as we work to end gender-based violence in our part of the world. #GenerationEquality #orangetheworld #16Days

20.01.2022 There are many drivers of poverty in Australia and one of the major factors is the low rate of income provided to those on social security benefits. The constant struggle to afford even the most basic needs can have a long-term impact on adults and even more so on children. Sadly, a key source of child poverty in Australia is due to the high poverty rate seen in single parent families, who often need to rely on a sole-parent income. ... 20.01.2022 Last year almost 43,000 young people were at risk of, or experiencing homelessness in Australia. * Young people don’t choose homelessness. Family conflict, mental ill-health and a lack of stable income are just some of the factors contributing to #youthhomelessness in Australia. Sadly, young people face more discrimination in the rental market. This is due to a lack of rental references and of course, fewer financial resources. ... For young people, an experience of homelessness can be trauma, isolating, dangerous and it means they’re more likely to be driven into homelessness again in adulthood.
