22.01.2022 LawRight Story - Women survivors Julia* was allegedly raped while out with fellow-students but feared she wouldn’t be believed and police advised that court was unlikely to yield a result. With her parents living regionally and her study, well-being and housing all impacted by the trauma of the crime, Julia needed support. Applying to Victim Assist is a complex process that can take over 12 months, so our Community Justice Partnership with a sexual assault service supported J...ulia for over five months to access medical records and apply successfully to Victim Assist. A special assistance payment helped Julia feel that her experience and trauma had been recognised and ongoing financial assistance enabled her to access a specialist counsellor. It also paid for her Mum to fly to Brisbane and offer more support. Women at the sexual assault service tell us that above all, they want someone to understand this should not have happened. We are proud to support these survivors. *name changed to protect identity

15.01.2022 We agree with these sentiments from David Hillard of Clayton Utz - clients benefit from a broad network of firms (big and small) with experience and willingness to do pro bono work in a variety of areas. He says: "We have avoided pro bono league tables in Australia. Instead, we have built a collaborative and collegiate culture, sharing expertise between firms, working together on pro bono projects and through member-based organisations such as Justice Connect and LawRight. M...ature pro bono practices have focussed on providing access to justice for low-income clients, and involving all lawyers, regardless of seniority or area of practice. Rather than seeking to crown a best pro bono firm, Australia developed a National Pro Bono Target in 2007, setting a minimum 35-hour annual pro bono benchmark across the legal profession." There is also valuable collaboration across the states including Justice Connect, Law Access and JusticeNet SA. hhttps://www.lawyersweekly.com.au/biglaw/30054-no-place-for-competition-in-firms-pro-bono-efforts

08.01.2022 LawRight can help Sarina because we have spent years building a strong relationship with the community agency who help her through times of crisis. This means our legal service can collaborate deeply with community workers to resolve more of a client's problems at the same time. LawRight has helped Sarina for years, as she moves from homelessness to housing, from debt to financial stability and from mental health turmoil to recovery. Recently we attended a hearing with her to improve her mental health treatment. Sarina was motivated by the positive result to move into private housing and start studying again.
