25.01.2022 MEDIA STATEMENT | Jocelyne Boujos has been declared elected as the Law Society of Western Australia’s President for 2021. Ms Boujos is the Law Society’s current Senior Vice President. In 2017 and 2018, Ms Boujos held the positions of Junior Vice President and Treasurer and has been a member of the Council since 2016. 18.01.2022 The Law Society congratulates Matthew Zilko SC on his appointment as Parliamentary Inspector of the Corruption and Crime Commission (CCC). Mr Zilko is a longstanding supporter and member of the Law Society. He is an experienced litigator who appeared as counsel in hundreds of trials in all Western Australian courts and tribunals, the Federal Court and High Court in both criminal and civil matters. The Law Society wishes Mr Zilko all the best in his important new role.

14.01.2022 The Law Society of WA congratulates former Supreme Court Judge Lindy Jenkins on her appointment as Chair of the Law Reform Commission of Western Australia, joining current members Dr Sarah Murray and Ms Kirsten Chivers to form the first all-female Commission since it its inception in 1972. Ms Jenkins is a longstanding supporter of the Law Society and has been a member since 1999. The Law Society also acknowledges the contribution by Dr David Cox for his service to law reform in Western Australia over the past six years.

12.01.2022 Lands Minister Ben Wyatt has today launched the Aboriginal and Dual Naming Guidelines for naming Western Australian geographic features and places to help preserve and reawaken local languages through Aboriginal place names. The release of the guidelines coincides with NAIDOC Week, which this year recognises the continuous connection of Aboriginal people to language and Country. 10.01.2022 The Law Society of Western Australia congratulates Sarah Russell, who has been appointed as a Judge of the District Court. As announced by the Attorney General, the Hon John Quigley MLA, Ms Russell will take up her new position on 2 December 2020. Ms Russell is a barrister with over 25 years' experience in civil, corporate and commercial litigation and has been a longstanding member of the Law Society since 2003. 10.01.2022 This year we commemorate the 102nd anniversary since the guns on the Western Front fell silent and reflect on the significance of that event. We also pause to remember all of the men and women of the Australian Defence Force who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and express our gratitude to members of the legal profession who have also served, such as the late Max Kott, John Francis Walsh, and Francis Burt. We will remember them. Lest we forget.

06.01.2022 The Law Society warmly congratulates the winners of the Attorney General’s Community Service Law Awards: Julia Johnstone, the Citizens Advice Bureau of WA, the Consumer Credit Legal Service, Corrs Chambers Westgarth and Estrin Saul Lawyers. The awards were presented by Attorney General John Quigley MLA to recognise and celebrate the pro bono work being done by lawyers and community legal services in Western Australia.

06.01.2022 After months of speculation, Federal Court Judges Jacqueline Gleeson and Simon Steward have been announced as the newest High Court appointees. They will fill the vacancies left by Justices Geoffrey Nettle and Virginia Bell when they retire over the next few months. Justice Gleeson has a strong background in public and commercial law, appeared for NSW at the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, and is the first child of a former High Court Justice to be appointed to the Court. Justice Steward only recently became a Judge in 2018, before which he was a barrister specialising in tax law.

The AGM approved the Law Society's Annual Report and Annual Financial Statements, which can be viewed by clicking here: https://buff.ly/36Nbf7o Congratulations to Mr Denis William McLeod, who was elected as the Law Society's newest Life Member. Mr McLeod has been an active member of the Society since he joined in 1968. 03.01.2022 From today, legal practitioners will be able to provide assistance in immigration matters without holding registration as a migration agent. The Law Society welcomes these long-awaited changes. Removing expensive dual regulation will improve access to justice by reducing costs for consumers and allow more lawyers to provide immigration assistance.

02.01.2022 The Law Society congratulates University of Western Australia (UWA) law student, Sophie Coffin, who has been awarded the John Koowarta Scholarship for 2020. The John Koowarta Scholarship is a national scholarship dedicated to helping Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander law students achieve their ambition of becoming a lawyer. As announced by the Law Council of Australia, Sophie is a proud Ngangumarta/Yindjibarndi woman from Port Hedland WA and currently finishing her Juris ...Doctor. Her passion for human rights, social justice and intellectual property informs her aspiration for a career in the protection of the intellectual property rights of Aboriginal artists in Western Australia.
