25.01.2022 In week 9, Term 3, senior years students from a number of Laynhapuy Homelands attended a Galtha Rom at Bäniyala homeland community to learn about key stories and knowledge from the area. Galtha Rom is an integral part of both Laynhapuy Homelands School and Yirrkala School’s two-ways pedagogy. These events are largely place-based and focus on the intergenerational transfer of knowledge. LHS’ Learning on Country team worked with the Yirralka Rangers and senior elders for mon...ths negotiating the program. A lot of work went into preparing various sites so that students could travel and spend time at these significant areas. The learning that was undertaken over this week was then taken into the classroom afterwards, where rangers and Homeland teachers supported students to further unpack the ideas and knowledge they learnt about. A big thank you to the senior Yolu leaders who led the learning, the Bäniyala homeland community, Bäniyala school, Yirralka rangers and the Learning on Country program for supporting and facilitating this wonderful event.

24.01.2022 Celebrating Semester 2 learning with the Rorruwuy School Community.

24.01.2022 On Wednesday 7th April various members of the Laynhapuy Homelands School team engaged with some 4WD training delivered by Greg from Smart Driver Training - NT. The focus was on defensive driving for gravel roads and the course included: stopping safely at high speed; changing a tyre; car handling; safe use of recovery gear; and gettting out of a bog. There was a mixture of adrenaline and laughter throughout the day, but most importantly everyone now knows how to keep safe when travelling to and from the Homelands.

22.01.2022 Week 8, Term 4 saw our first ever Pop-Up Career Expo for Homelands! We were overwhelmed by the support of 16 local businesses and organisations, who travelled to Mararr Homeland over two rainy days to participate. Each business ran engaging and interactive skill-based sessions for our Senior Students and some lucky Mararr (Garrthalala) Primary Students! Students were able to apply different work-skills and gain exposure to new pathway opportunities, within a Homeland conte...xt. We thank each business and their staff for not only attending our Career Expo, but for taking the time to create such great hands-on learning activities for our students. The big smiles on students say it all! A big thank you to Mararr (Garrthalala) community for hosting the event and for their continued support of our Senior Years program. A big thank you to all involved... 20.01.2022 In Week 1 Laynhapuy Homelands School held their teacher workshop for Term 3. Homelands Teachers and Visiting Teachers gathered in Garrthalala for 3 days of discussions, learning both-ways and planning for the term. 16.01.2022 Dhälinybuy Open Day 24.06.20 A fantastic turnout for the Dhälinybuy School Open Day families all came along to celebrate the achievements of the students from FaFT through to Year 12. The awards along with Student Progress Reports were read out by one of the community elders and presented by one of the Homeland Teachers. 14.01.2022 Open day at Waa. Waa school held their open day for all the students and their families on Wednesday the 9th December. The children practised their role-play a few times before families arrived. Things really started to go smoothly when the Waa SHEP student took over the organisation and assisted with first language instructions. The school was beautifully decorated with Welcome and Christmas messages from the students and they took great pride in showing the princ...ipal and visiting teacher when they arrived. The families came in to view the Hattie and the fox role play. The students made us laugh. Families shared in presentation of certificates by the school council chairman and the Waa SHEP student. The Waa Teaching Team, including the aspiring student teacher, shared student reports with parents and grandparents. We ended by all sharing a delicious lunch as the children awaited a visit from Santa Claus. See more

13.01.2022 School leaders and Visiting Teachers engaged in two days of professional learning this week focussed on trauma informed teaching practice. We are learning about the Berry Street Education Model (BSEM). This work links with our school priority to develop a Whole School Instructional Model that values both Yolu and äpaki knowledge and practices. We acknowledge that this is just the start of the journey and that we have a lot more to learn about. We look forward to exploring this further with the Homelands based Yolu educators next Term. Here is a snap shot of learning from Day 1 of the BSEM professional learning program, a great visual reminder of the key ideas. https://www.facebook.com/BerryStreetEducationModel/posts/381133939856955

04.01.2022 Meet our NT Secondary Teacher of the Year Daniel Yore from Yirrkala Bilingual School! Working alongside Yolu educator Vanessa Marika, the duo have worked h...and-in-hand with a group of 20 Yolu students, from their Middle Years to their upcoming graduations in 2020 and 2021. Mentors to each other, they use a Both Ways approach utilising students’ cultural knowledge as a core strength in becoming the first ever students from Yirrkala Bilingual School to achieve an ATAR and commence university. The situation we’ve got here where students are really graduating in what’s essentially a double degree, in Western knowledge and Yolu knowledge, that can’t happen alone." Congratulations to Dan, Vanessa and the students at Yirrkala on your remarkable achievements!

02.01.2022 Homeland Learning Centres are important education hubs here in the Territory, allowing students to learn on their own country and in their own culture. It was ...great to visit Garrthalala and Gan Gan to see Homelands learning in action and talk to community leaders and educators about the importance of setting children and young people up for success. Out here, kids are achieving extraordinary outcomes through community-led and locally relevant education. We can do more to support homelands learning, and I look forward to working with communities to support their aspirations.

02.01.2022 In 2020 our Secondary Homelands Education Program (S.H.E.P) was in full swing! Despite the challenges of Covid-19 restrictions, our senior students have made some amazing achievements. We have had 18 targeted senior years learning camps at Mararr (Garrthalala) community where students have completed learning towards their Northern Territory Certificate of Education and Training (NTCET). At learning camps students practice many life skills such as cooking, cleaning (even th...e toilets!), learning first-aid and driving skills. A lot has been achieved this year... * 13 students received their First Aid Certificate * 19 students gained their NT Learners Permit * 7 students completed their Personal Learning Plan * 9 students completed the Certificate I in Conservation and Land Management * 8 students completed the Certificate II in Family Wellbeing. We have had incredibly rich cultural learning experiences including Galtha Rom, Biodiversity Surveys and our very first Marine Science/Art Camp. A huge thank you and Merry Christmas to all who have supported our S.H.E.P program this year including Yirralka Rangers, Laynhapuy Health and all of our wonderful Homeland Centre Teachers and families of senior students. We are very proud of the growth and successes that we have seen in our senior students and future leaders, and last week we all enjoyed a Christmas lunch to celebrate our year! See more
