24.01.2022 On Advent Sunday, 1st December, the Vicar blessed the Crib. It is situated in the narthex (foyer) and he was assisted by members of the parish. Fr Fred wrote the service and it includes the following: The shepherds came from the surrounding fields to gaze and wonder at this marvellous sight at the Manger.... The Angels came from the heavenly realms to sing praises to the Christ-Child. The three Magi, following the Star, came to Bethlehem and worshipped at the feet of the Holy One. They offered gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. We too come to this representation of the Manger at Bethlehem, to offer praise and thanksgiving. And as the Magi made their journey through many lands to come to this holy place, so do we make our own journey, a spiritual journey within, to the Holy One who dwells within the cave of the human heart. We come to worship and to offer our gifts - of Faith, Hope and Love. We come in the stillness of the night with simple faith and open hearts. We come to honour this great Mystery.

24.01.2022 On Sunday 7th June (Trinity Sunday) at St John The Beloved, Melbourne, Fr Fred’s and Libby’s daughter Katharine and her two children (Clara & Alex) came to church in order to have their new arrival Autumn, a three-month old King Charles Spaniel blessed. The Ceremony of Blessing was duly performed by the Vicar, with the assistance of the children and congregation. It was indeed a happy event. We also had Dr Kieran Crichton as our guest organist. He is a well-known musicologis...t and church organist in Melbourne, and is also Secretary of the Melbourne Chapter of the Australian Academy of Liturgy, of which the Vicar is also a member. His musical contribution to the service was truly inspiring, and everyone expressed their appreciation of it. According to Archbishop Graham, Autumn is now a Liberal Catholic Australian dog with Scottish and Spanish ancestry King Charles was also king of Scotland and Spaniels were Spanish water dogs. With that background she is a real Australian! We are one but we are many, and from all the world we come Pictured (l to r) are Alex, Eve (friend), Clara with Autumn, Katharine and Fr Fred. FS

24.01.2022 J.C.M.A. Meeting The Vicar, a member of JCMA (Jewish Christian Muslim Association) attended a meeting held on Sunday 1st March in the afternoon. Its theme was The Abrahamic Faiths Maintaining Connections and Relationships in Challenging Times.... It was an afternoon of conversation with a special international guest Sheikh Mazen Ahram, the Imam and Mraqub (Monitor) of all Mosques in Jerusalem. Joining the Imam was Rev Ian Smith and Rabbi Ralph Genende, having met with Sheikh Mazen Ahram in Jerusalem while on the ‘JCMA Joint Journey To Jerusalem’ last year, and now renewing their friendship and continuing the conversations.

22.01.2022 The Vicar, Fr Fred Shade and his colleagues in the Wiffler Flute Quartet, presented a concert in aid of Bushfire Relief at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Surrey Hills on Sunday 16th February in the afternoon. The Vicar of the church Fr Mark Pearce (pictured) and his parish supported this concert very well. Richard Hoy (pictured), their Music Director and Organist, ably assisted with fine renditions on their lovely organ.

21.01.2022 Fr Fred and wife Libby (parish secretary) decided to return to what they were doing when they first met nearly 60 years ago playing flute duets! A lovely pastime when stuck at home. It is now a daily routine. They performed together a double flute concerto when teenagers. Libby was also a professional flautist and worked in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra for some years, followed by Fr Fred, who was Principal Piccolo for 30 years

18.01.2022 The Farquharson Portrait John Alexander Farquharson (1882 1975) was ordained in 1926. He was Priest-in-charge in Melbourne at the Church of the Holy Spirit from 1951 to 1966 and succeeded the first Melbourne priest John B. McConkey. He continued his work as a priest for 50 years, and was also Vicar General of the province from 1961 to 1969.... A portrait of him was painted by the artist Mavis Leslie Wilson. She was well known in Victoria*. The portrait is held at St John The Beloved. It is life-size, with Fr John vested in a cope and seated. He was active in the Theosophical Society for many years, a Trustee of the Society, and a mentor and guide to many such as our vicar. *Mavis Wilson was an Archibald finalist in 1955 with a portrait of Sir William Angliss which is in the Angliss Foundation collection. A portrait of her by A.D. Colquhuon was shown in the 1944 Archibald Prize. It is now in the collection of the Horsham Regional Gallery.

15.01.2022 Knight Templar Church Parade Members of the Masonic Knights Templar and their families attended the parish service on 25th August. It was a truly wonderful and colourful occasion, with the members in their medieval regalia and participating in the service so enthusiastically. ... Our Vicar is a senior member of the Order and the church was nearly full. Those who were not able to attend missed a remarkable and inspiring occasion. By the way, our Presiding Archbishop, William Downey (U.S.A.), is also a Knight Templar! And some of you will remember the late Fr Harry Pringle (Sydney). He was Vicar in Chatswood and retired to Canberra in his later years. He was the Provincial Prelate for the Knights Templar for New South Wales. The parish received not only a large offertory but also a donation from the Order. The photo shows the Grand Master (right of the Vicar) and other senior officers in the sanctuary.

14.01.2022 Among the icons on display in the Vicar's oratory, there are two of our Lady. Left: Authenticated icon purchased in 2015 in a church shop behind the cathedral in Vienna. It is a 20th century copy of the famous 16th century icon held at Mount Athos. Right: Our Lady of Meteora. Authenticated icon purchased in 2017 at Meteora, Greece (north of Athens). This area is famous for the large number of monasteries perched on cliffs and hillsides.

14.01.2022 URIEL, ARCHANGEL Uriel, Auriel/Oriel (God is my light) is one of the archangels of post-Exilic Rabbinic tradition, i.e. after their Babylonian captivity c500BC, and also of certain Christian traditions. Possibly Uriel's highest position is that of an Angel of Presence, Prince of Presence, Angel of the Face, Angel of Sanctification, Angel of Glory. A Prince of the Presence is an angel who is allowed to enter the presence of God. Uriel holds this position with others. A scriptu...ral reference to an angel of presence is found in Isaiah ch.63 v.9: In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old. The Book of Enoch mentions Uriel in many of the component books. In Chapter 9, which is part of "The Book of the Watchers" (2nd century BC), only four Angels are mentioned by name, these are Michael, Uriel, Raphael, and Gabriel. The Vicar completed this icon, his second, during the lockdown, and dedicated it on 18th July 2020.

13.01.2022 This figure of Our Lord is known as the Christus Rex (Christ the King). He is shown in an attitude of benediction, clothed in priestly robes and wearing a crown. It is situated above the entrance to the nave of the church.

11.01.2022 During this difficult time, the Vicar has got out his paint brush and has completed a mandala. It is the basic geometric design that is the foundation of the very complex mandalas that are painted in India and Nepal. (He has a few of these from his trip to Nepal.) It shows the four gates which we need to enter in order to reach the centre, the point within the circle, nirvana, or in our terms union with Christ. More information about this mandala can be obtained from the Vicar ([email protected]).

10.01.2022 From the archives. Fr Fred Shade's 15th anniversary of his ordination in 1996. From left to right - Fr Steve van Dissel, Bishop Allan Bradley, Fr Fred Shade, deacon John Wilson.

09.01.2022 On Sunday 22nd March, Lent IV (Laetare Sunday, hence the rose-coloured candle), our deacon, property manager and stage manager Russell Cole, had to deal with some recalcitrant candles. Once they were lit and installed, he gave the nod to the Vicar who then began the service.

09.01.2022 This tapestry of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper hangs above the organ alcove at St John The Beloved in Glen Iris. It has an interesting history. It was given to the Vicar nearly 40 years ago by a colleague who had brought it back from Italy at the end of the War. He found it in a shed on a farm, hidden under a lot of rubble. The farmer offered the tapestry to him, being assured that it would be properly looked after in Australia.

08.01.2022 On Saturday 26th October, Mr Robert Nash, National Secretary of the Huguenot Society of Australia, made a presentation at St. John The Beloved for the Victorian Chapter. The title of his talk was Huguenots in Ireland. It was a full house.

07.01.2022 We are open this coming Sunday 22nd March at the normal time of 10.30am at 91 Carroll Crescent, Glen Iris.

07.01.2022 During this difficult time our Vicar has been using his paint brush (not very well, but it’s great therapy). The second work is an icon of St Michael Archangel. Fr Fred has a strong affinity with this Archangel (he can’t explain why). He was ordained on the Feast of St Michael and All Angels (1981), and his son Michael (b 1967) is named after the archangel. The archangel is a leader and warrior. Perhaps that says something!

03.01.2022 On Sunday 15th December, St John The Beloved had the pleasure of a visit from Dr Kieran Chriton, musicologist and organist. He is Convenor of the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Academy of Liturgy, of which the Vicar is also a member. He assisted in the sanctuary, read the epistle and presented the homily. He explained a lot about the epistle and gospel, and at our conversation around the table after the service, he outlined the programme for the national convention of AAL to be held in Melbourne in January 2021.

03.01.2022 Sunday 27th April was more special than usual in that St John The Beloved had the pleasure of a visit from Fr Greg Connolly. Fr Greg and Lyn were touring Victoria visiting friends and relatives. The Vicar made sure that Greg was kept busy as deacon, gospeller, crucifer, boat bearer etc. Blanche Lough was also a server on Sunday. On this day the names of parishioners and friends who had served in overseas conflicts were read.... A special prayer in regard to recent terrorism was also used in the service. See more
