25.01.2022 Does a low carb healthy fat LCHF diet work? When your GP has indicated you have signs of fatty liver, cholesterol or triglycerides are too high and you are threatened with medications unless you do something about it....do something about it! A LCHF lifestyle addresses the cause of these problems and fuels your body in a way that can support improvement in these issues, especially reducing abdominal fat.... These actual blood results of a patient of mine highlight how effective the right diet can be. The results show a 4 month time frame and show the cholesterol, triglycerides and liver function improved to within normal ranges. This was a 76year old female who couldnt exercise. Its this abdominal weight which represents fat accumulation around the organs, that can cause inflammation, insulin resistance and diabetes.... You dont need fancy equipment to tell if you have this internal fat. All you need is a tape measure. Your waist measurement isnt your trouser size, its possibly bigger because your waist is higher up than where your trousers sit. 22.01.2022 Why do I follow a low carb lifestyle?? - I struggled to lose weight after pregnancies despite following what I had always done ie. followed a low fat, calorie controlled lifestyle. As a dietitian, this really made me feel down on myself! - I no longer had the patience for calorie counting and restrictive eating.... - Really enjoying my food has become more important to me as I give more to others. Its a simple pleasure. - Low carb high fat helps me enjoy my food and feel truly satisfied so I dont feel the need to eat as often (dont have time anyway lol) - I can actually control my weight without high intensity exercise. I run if I want to not because I have to. - I can control inflammation and pain in my joints from #rossrivervirus. Definitely a thing for me I have noticed. - I was a carb addict - whole grain bread, potatoes, especially pasta..and lollies/chocolate. Still like them but there is no craving there and lollies seem too sweet.Big difference. - I want to grow old without the chronic disease that is so prevalent - heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimers, liver disease, cancer. I keep up to date with the scientific literature that evaluates lower carbs and higher fats and conclude for myself that I support this way of living. 20.01.2022 LCHF pancakes. I cheated and didnt make from scratch. But these low carb pancakes with sugar free maple syrup totally hit the spot! Typically, LCHF or low carb healthy/high fat has a focus on using real food, not commercial, to avoid added nasties like hydrogenated fats and hidden sugars. There is place for occasional time saving exceptions to making from scratch I believe. This mornings Sunday pancakes was one such occasion.... Actually these pancakes are so much higher in fibre due to the resistant starch and chick pea flour that they are suitably impressive. The sugar free maple syrup is sorbitol and sucralose amongst other things but I couldnt bring myself to add pure sugar after my 75min walk! According to my calculations I consumed a total 9g carbohydrate in my version vs around 50g in typical pancakes with syrup. Calorie wise, mine was approx 130kcal vs 250-350kcal depending on how much syrup you might add. Worth the swap and equally satisfying. A body composition scan is a great way to determine what your body is made of and to track real progress, meaning, changes in body fat and muscle weight.... Body Mass Index (BMI) is purely a measurement of the density of your body and is your weight (kg) divided by your height squared (m). This photo is actually one of my scans - my weight & BMI post-children is higher than my previous which could be a concern. On further investigation though, it seems I carry more muscle weight than I used to. I exercise differently, plus carrying prams, small humans and all manner of bikes/tricycles all the time makes a difference! 09.01.2022 You just cant beat a good spag bog. For me this is a comforting food and I could eat it every night! Often, these highly desired foods (or drinks!) that you feel are important to your enjoyment of life arent ones that align with the health related goals that you also place high importance on (like losing weight or improving your diabetes or fatty liver). This is where your perspective is important. Remember you always have a choice. A choice can have a Price and a Benefit.... The benefit can be feeling fulfilled, enjoying the taste, joining in, not feeling as if you are missing out. The Price could be feeling awful afterwards, not losing weight, having a high blood sugar reading, feeling bloated or having a hangover. Sometimes its a tough choice so just make sure its a conscious choice. You could always choose to make a compromise that doesnt detract from the benefit. For example, I can easily trade pasta for zucchini pasta and thats a win-win. Or I might choose to have a smaller portion of pasta and enjoy more of the bolognaise which has veggies and protein in it. You might choose to reduce your wine and save it for those times you are socialising whilst planning an alternative relaxation strategy for the other days. No one wants to be so rigid in their eating habits that there is no longer any enjoyment in life. So choose, be mindful and make sure you mindfully enjoy your meal, guilt free, either way. 07.01.2022 4 teaspoons of sugar. In relative terms, this is how much sugar is put into your bloodstream after consuming: 1 slice of bread Or an apple Or a cup of cows milk... Or 1/2 a potato Our bodies are designed to process this sugar by producing insulin -the energy storage hormone. If you have insulin resistance it means your body is making excess insulin in order to clear the sugar out of your blood steam. Sometimes it is successful, meaning your blood sugar test looks normal (though all the insulin has led you to store the sugar as fat). Sometimes the excess insulin still is not successful at clearing the sugar from the bloodstream (pre-diabetes and diabetes). Choose low sugar foods for sure. If you think you may be insulin resistant dont forget to factor in the amount of other healthy foods that your body breaks down into sugar! 06.01.2022 After the school holidays and more indulgences than I usually would have, Im feeling like I needed a reset this weekend. I noticed feeling more lethargic and started craving foods that I know dont agree with me. Im also not wanting any joint pain to flare up. So I had a very low carb weekend and might just keep it going because thats when I feel my best.... Started with a Formulite meal replacement shake, followed by some sliced tomato with cheese and pesto, a handful of nuts (not the portion shown.That was the little boy pretending to cook a tray of potatoes) then crispy skin chicken with salad. I dont feel the slightest desire to eat now but Ive got some extra water on hand and nice tea on the ready just in case. Restrictive? No way, its actually what my body wants. Low in fibre? Not when you see the size of my salads. Excess in protein, damaging to the kidneys? Nope. And not excessive in red meat or bacon. 04.01.2022 Thinking of appropriate lower carb meals is easier when you start with a structure. Step 1: make half your meal non-starchy vegetables such as salad or cooked veggies. To keep it simple, non-starchy vegetables refers to veggies other than potato, corn or sweet potato. ... Step 2: choose your protein. Not excessive, just 1/4 of the meal so around palm sized. Red meat, chicken, fish, eggs, tofu are some examples. Step 3: the carbs refers to potato, corn, sweet potato, rice, pasta, bread, quinoa, couscous etc. A low carb meal plan would have no more than a serve in a meal but not at every meal of the day. Ideally, swap the carb for low carb alternative such as cauliflower rice, konjac rice/noodles, low carb seeded crackers, zucchini noodles, edamame pasta or simply leave it out. For a very low carb meal dont include the carb portion. Remember though its ok to include some fat.
