25.01.2022 Like the ocean, BODY LANGUAGE is powerful. Why? Because it’s visual & human beings are highly visual. It’s a fact. Some cool tips: 1. Claim your space. Be solid like the rock in this image. Stand with your feet spread further apart. This territory claiming is a subconscious cue that you are feeling confident. Use the space around you. Walk into a room powerfully. Claim that space!... 2. Carry one thing instead of juggling a handbag, a briefcase & a coat & an umbrella, use one bag. Requires a bit of thinking and planning - it’s worth it. 3. Avoid touching hair, glasses, earrings etc. These are all seen as low confidence gestures. 23.01.2022 Complex problem solving (CPS) 2020 has been an unprecedented year. Essential skills for 2020’s is our focus for this week.... AI can do a whole lot that human beings can’t. It’s a good thing. But it comes back the other way too. CPS is about simplifying the problem by reducing it to essentials. It’s not linear, more radiant by connecting several factors. All the information may not be present - you’ll need to seek additional information. Prioritising & compromising decisions & outcomes - you need to think! Toughest thing for humans to do. 23.01.2022 CONFIRMATION BIAS This one refers to the tendency to look for or favour information that confirms beliefs we already hold. See, I told you he would hold that view! He’s your typical white male with privilege. He has no idea really. As I told you earlier, people of Asian descent are really great with tech... Men make better leaders, because women are too emotional Men are better hair stylists because they cut better (yes, my Gran actually believed that) See how we believe something & then it occurs and we have confirmation bias? I want to say it’s actually a load of crap really, but it’s simply CONFIRMATION BIAS. That is all. Can you find any for yourself? My adult daughter has a quick wit & is really funny, so when she gets on a roll, I notice that I expect it to occur that way, every time. I wait for ‘funny’ like it’s her job to entertain me. 20.01.2022 What does it mean to be TRULY CONNECTED to another human being in life & business? Connection can mean having an affinity with, a linkage, a relationship or an association. It will begin with shared values, a shared sense of direction. We might share some hope & aspiration for how we see the world. Our business goals will be aligned somehow.... Our first nations people might speak of their connection to country and their kin. I recently read ‘My Tidda, My Sister by Marlee Silva. A tidda will see one of her own on a train & ask ‘Who’s your mob?’. That level of connection to family is crucial to who they are. Do we go through life disconnected? Working hard in the business? Why is our staff turnover so high? Can they really be so disconnected? Does the board know what’s going on with front line staff & clients? I think DEEP connections is the answer. 16.01.2022 A strong sense of JUSTICE I've always been drawn to what is fair & just in my life and in the world around me. This has led me to getting into trouble as a child by standing up to the nuns for being unfair, speaking up for a child who was wrongly blamed. I was labelled a trouble maker. I now see that I simply do not tolerate injustice.... I've been fired twice because I dared to speak up to both CEO's bullying behaviour. It would have been easier to let it go. I know now that it was absolutely the right thing to do. Someone must speak for those who can't. I knew that people in roles of leadership got to influence what was fair and just. They impacted change for the good. That paved a way for me. No-one takes a child's point of view. We do listen to leaders who can influence. 12.01.2022 Meet MAVIS, my Saboteur! She's the wee voice in my head who tells me I'm not good enough. She is NOT me. We have a healthy & respectful relationship these days. She knows her place. I know mine. Every morning after my meditation and movement practice, I sit at my desk and look straight ahead at this cork board. I keep her there as a visual reminder. I have other things that help me on a daily basis too. I recite Maya Angelou's poem 'Phenomenal Woman' out loud to remind myself... that I have a right to BE the woman I am. The mould was broken the day I was born. There is no-one else like me. This is what I teach my clients. BE YOU! The world needs you just as you are - not all trussed up in a corporate suite with a look and feel to please someone else. Pfft! I make progress. I don't do perfection. F*ck that! 12.01.2022 Does CONNECTION impact how we are able to influence others? What I know for sure in life is that if I have no connection - I’ve got zero influence. I have been able to have great influence in business and in my personal life through the connections I have with people. They have had great influence on me for the same reason.... Connections that run deep are the ones that I treasure the most. These are the people who will hear me out, have the debate, open the door, refer me on and help my cause. It comes from my savvy mother-in-law, advice she gave me on my wedding day. In every good marriage, she counseled, it helps sometimes to be a little deaf. I have followed that advice assiduously, and not only at home through 56 years of a marital partnership. I have em...ployed it as well in every workplace, including the Supreme Court. When a thoughtless or unkind word is spoken, best tune out. Reacting in anger or annoyance will not advance one’s ability to persuade. 10.01.2022 The Affinity Bias Also known as the like-likes-like, this bias refers to our tendency to gravitate toward people similar to ourselves. That might mean hiring or promoting someone who shares the same race, gender, age, or educational background. You might remember this one playing out in primary school where all the cool kids hung together and all the dags were outcast? Where is our opportunity to shift gears? Ensure that you provide opportunity to include two or more qualifie...d women as well as two people from other underrepresented racial/ethnic groups. I’ve been on a board where directors only wanted to hire a CEO who looked like them, a pale, stale male. They were also highly judgemental of women of colour and women with small children despite their experience and high intellect. Bit of bias going on here? You bet. Conscious or unconscious? 10.01.2022 What I know for sure is that ADDICTION has impact across many aspects of life. I am familiar with a few: health relationships financial... confidence depression & anxiety business ability to experience enjoyment in life being completely out of integrity with myself contribution to community & causes I really care about and so many more that I don’t even know about. I’m not the expert here. The point is that due to addiction I was not fully present in my life & spent years not being able to contribute in life. I’m aware that I can’t give what I don’t have & these days I sure do have it to give. 1 day @ a time is how I roll. I believe quite strongly that we have a duty of care to look after ourselves & be in a space where we can mentor others, be of service in our career, business, on a board, whatever! Thing is YOU can’t give what you DONT have! If I’m not in complete integrity with myself and my health, it’s going to leak out in my relationships both personally and in my work. What do you think? Some interesting facts: Interruption: Research shows men interrupt women more than twice as often as women interrupt men. But women often interrupt other women with the same frequency. Pitch: We all have a natural or optimum pitch with a high, middle, & low range that we vary according to the message. Most of our daily speaking is in the middle range of our pitch. When we are happy or excited, our pitch rises. We use a lower pitch to convey sadness, fear, or anger. Nerves can cause us to use an unnaturally high pitch, which may be perceived as less credible. Are your variations supporting or detracting from your message? Both men and women perceive lower voices as more authoritative. Margaret Thatcher understood this. Her commitment to her leadership style included voice coaching to generate a lower pitch that communicated authority. Name a woman who uses her voice powerfully. Go on! 09.01.2022 I grew up with this amazing woman as my Gran. She was one of 7. She birthed 5 children. Enjoyed 14 Grand children and got real confused remembering the names of 27 great grand children. No surprise she loved company and was a brilliant host in her home. She contributed greatly to her community and family. She was always involved in a cause, donating her time, looking out for others. Gran DID community well.... Always interested in what was happening inside and outside of her family, she was constantly contributing & making a difference to others. I grew up seeing her volunteering and doing what she did and just saw that as normal. As a teenager I started working part time from the age of 12. That was ok then. It’s not now. lol! I always made time for a cause fuelled by what I was really passionate about, just like Gran did. She was always my inspiration. An incredible woman. Grateful today for the wisdom that comes from our elders and wise ones. The contribution we make on the kinder & school committee are no different to a paid board role. 09.01.2022 Unconscious Bias : Halo vs Horns ..... This is the unconscious bias that tends to put a HALO on someone (she’s so fabulous!) by putting them on a pedestal or think more highly of them after learning something impressive about them. The flip side of this is to put HORNS on them (she’s such a bitch!) by perceiving them negatively after learning something unfavourable about them. And then we bloody keep them there! What the hell????... There is an opportunity here you know! If you are up for it, consider why you have a negative (or positive) perception. What I know for sure about the average Aussie is that our BS detector is fine tuned.... It starts screaming at the slightest sign that you are faking it. I insist on your authenticity. I value it highly and it will go a long way to build trust. You don’t have to be right or perfect but I need you to be real so I can connect with the core of who you are. 01.01.2022 It's HARD taking action on addiction. It's HARD to do what needs to be done for the greater good isnt it? There is a solution to all things isn’t there? I’m a big believer in that.... I find a way. I persist. There is no CURE for addiction. It gets managed one day at a time. That’s all I do. Today. By the time I get to tomorrow, it’s today again. I have some pretty strong disciplines & I know they work. Do I slip up? Yep. Then I get right back on again - immediately. Not in a minute. Immediately. It’s hard you see. But I get to choose my hard. Impact on health, relationships, finances, my confidence. That’s hard. I’ve chosen my HARD. Works for me today. For a day, I can do anything really. It’s HARD for a woman to get a board role/C Suite role. It’s hard to be the only woman at the table. It’s hard when the blokes are taking credit for your work. One day at a time we can take the action needed for her to see that she is the one they are waiting for. Choose YOUR hard. The privilege of choice is one we have in our first world today. 01.01.2022 I named her! That voice inside my head has a name. Meet my MAVIS! She is not me. I'm pretty cool. And I make plenty of mistakes I can learn from but Mavis takes it to a whole new level. Naming her has helped me to identify that she is separate to me. She has her own entity. Once I got clear on that, I found managing her a whole new ball game really!... We have a bit of fun now. I like fun. Look at her turned up lip. My lip does that too. My hair looks like this when it's freshly washed and we both have great teeth. LOL! So I'm clear that Mavis and I have a few things in common but we are not united. I named her. I have grown awareness of the role she likes to play in my life. My job is to keep Mavis where she belongs. Over there. Not in my head. She sleeps a lot these days and is generally well behaved. My job, every day is to keep her calm and well rested.
