I can't wait to share the video with you next Wednesday! Here's a bit about Mim:... Mim and her husband Dan co-founded @moxie_reader, an Ed Tech start up. Moxie Reader creates a social space for reading, strengthens reading skills, and allows teachers to track their student's progress. This program was rolled out across the New York public Primary School system - an extraordinary achievement! Their other extraordinary achievement is raising four gorgeous kids, now in their teens and twenties, and creating a strong reading culture in their family at every age and stage. Mim is a long time member of the Leading Note community, as I have had the joy of teaching violin & viola to her two youngest kids for a number of years. 12.01.2022 Happy Lunar New Year! One of the things I love about being a teacher is learning about my student's cultural traditions. I asked one of the beautiful Mums in our community about her family's Vietnamese Lunar New Year recipes so I could learn, and share it with you all. Here is her gorgeous response:... Hi Sophie, what a beautiful and fun idea! I have a few favs but the most well known is a sticky rice cake due to the symbolic significance and I just love the texture and flavour of sticky rice. In case you're wondering what is the symbolic significance of this simple but delicious savoury rice cake - it's based on the respect for the heaven and earth's blessings and this respect is shown through embracing the basic but important crop rather than lavish or expensive dishes. This link seems to have lots lovely background info for one's appreciation as well as the recipe. Use books to start conversations, and learn about big topics together. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day was a favourite when her kids were smaller. A beautiful way to learn that sometimes things don't go the way we expect them to. When you can, model your own love of reading. Watch the video for many more practical tips! 06.01.2022 Interesting Instruments from Around the World #2 Il-Kitarra The Maltese Guitar Our street in Ardeer (a tiny suburb in Melbourne's West) was originally one big Maltese family, and there are still some of the original inhabitants living here! Lovely Tony over the road was the first to welcome us when we moved in. He tells me my home was originally his sister in law's house, and he grew up in the one next door to us. ... or is a few doors down, and has huge veggie patches. He grows the vegetables for him and his siblings, who still live within a block of each other (and he kindly shares his bounty with us, too!). Il-Kitarra (Maltese guitar) is part of Gana, a type of traditional Maltese folk music. It is often used to accompany singers, but in the video link below you can see two Il-Kitarras being played together, called Kitarri Biss. You might notice one is leading the melody (il prim), while the other plays chords, this is a common part of Ghana music. 02.01.2022 Paramedic Mary Answers Kids Questions My students love the rhyme we say in class about Paramedic Mary, so I contacted Ambulance Victoria to ask if there might be a Paramedic called Mary who would be happy to chat with me via Zoom. To my surprise, they took me seriously! As part of our wholistic approach to learning, I wanted to introduce my little students to a first responder in a comfortable, happy setting, and reassure them that mask wearing is just keeping everyone sa...fe.
