25.01.2022 Parramatta Marist High School provided us with the opportunity to create a fully equipped STEM space that celebrates the design and prototyping cycle. The team achieved this by specifically selecting all surfaces to have a learning intent whilst enabling untethered access to prototyping equipment. The learners are then empowered to explore, research, design, prototype, test and iterate. #architectureprojects #parramattamaristhighschool #educationdesign... 24.01.2022 We have partnered with Catholic Education, Diocese of Parramatta and St Josephs Primary School in Kingswood to drive inquiry from their stage 3 learners. Leaf Architecture designed a space that responds to the needs of the learners and engages with them depending on their progress in the inquiry cycle. The result is a highly effective space that empowers the learner to choose the most effective learning setting to respond to the needs of their specific task. Now overlay the... approach of every surface to have a learning intent and we have an effective space that drives communication, collaboration and critical thinking. #stjosephkingswood #educationarchitecture #architectureprojects Photo: @micnic_pics - Michael Nicholson Photography

24.01.2022 Recently Leaf Architecture became Carbon Neutral, and our next step is to look towards how we can create learning environments that educate us on our carbon footprint. Recently our team were workshopping ideas to inform the next generation on how to live, work and learn in a regenerative manner. #leafarchitecture #educationarchitecture #carbonneutral

23.01.2022 Following the recent months of work, refining our approach and vision for the studio, our team got together for a team shot that is truly representing Leaf Architecture. Leaf Architecture is an architecture practice that creates intentional, research driven designs. Leaf Architecture is constantly learning. We do not just rely on our past experience. We are dedicated to researching current and future practices and analysing how they can be supported through space and design.... Because of our commitment to learning, Leaf Architecture are leaders in Education, Workplace and Community Architecture and delivering innovative, practical and future proofed solutions based on our extensive research and experience. We consistently provide our clients, educators, learners, team members and communities with unexpected enhancements to their experience. #educationarchitects #architectureandpeople #architecturedesign

23.01.2022 We were all recently given the choice to work and learn in different settings at home, depending on our specific needs. There is a multitude of research conducted that supports increasing choice to increase engagement, buy-in and outcomes. Most of this research comes through the support for activity-based workplace, the premise being to create work settings that reflect the need for specific tasks rather than a one size fits all approach. Essentially having the freedom to c...hoose where to sit, depending on your mood, time of day, the task at hand or the need to collaborate in a group resulted in a positive impact on workers. We can provide these choices to our learners as we respond to their needs as humans striving to maintain their engagement. #environmentalarchitecture #educationarchitecture #ecodesign

23.01.2022 In our next episode of 'Learning Spaces', Leaf Architecture's Daniel Smith discusses with @anneknock the designing for learning behaviours. Using the 4Cs as a guide, we focus on the future workplace skills by reverse engineering how to enable natural collaboration among our learners. 20.01.2022 Over the past 5 years, we have been working with a small school within the Orange region. This school has been designed in a manner to promote the needs of the individual learner, whilst enabling a connection through a network of schools both across NSW and beyond. This school is a case study on how to enable remote based learning in a supportive environment. For this school, the impact of COVID was minimised as all students are highly digitally literate and were able to switch to remote learning easily. The design includes a central learning hub which enables individuals or groups to work collaboratively which is then supported by a range of studios for larger groups or smaller break out spaces for group VCs. #schoolbuilding #schoolarchitecture #learningspace

17.01.2022 We are constantly hearing that our lives will be the same and that we are now experiencing our new normal. Rather than dwell, Leaf Architecture has spent this time looking at the positives and learnings of this eventful year. Our biggest learning, having the benefit of working with over 20 schools at any given time, is that even the most gifted students grew fatigued. Having spent numerous hours in front of a screen, jumping from zoom meeting to zoom meeting, we can relate... to the impact of fatigue. The research clearly states that people (and students are people too) need to move, this encourages blood flow and the amount of oxygen sent to the brain. This enables us to be more alert and engaged, if we are engaged then we are able to learn. Simple biology supports an obvious link between movement and learning. Oxygen is essential for brain function, and enhanced blood flow increases the amount of oxygen transported to the brain. Physical activity is a reliable way to increase blood flow, and hence oxygen, to the brain. Teaching with the Brain in Mind, 2nd Edition, by Eric Jensen Learning spaces, and in fact work spaces, need to be designed in a manner that enables and encourages movement. This can be achieved through careful furniture choices and a few artful design choices. 16.01.2022 Within our studio, we strive to link to the natural environment not just to increase engagement but to address the needs of human beings through natural light, air and planting. We also explore how we can link our work to the original custodians of the land. Sometimes this is a simple gesture through the use of a yarning circle, sometimes this is deeper with the integration of an indigenous Australian adviser. #schoolbuilding #schoolarchitecture #learningspace

15.01.2022 We were recently asked ‘where do you feel most calm?’ Typically, this answer is in nature, hence the importance of biophilic design. The depth of this thinking is explored through the work of Oliver Heath Design (www.oliverheath.com) who researches the concept of bringing nature inside and adapting design to the rhythms and textures also found outdoors. In addition to this, we have been exploring the challenge to learn from the importance of play in our outdoor primary and h...igh school learning spaces, such as in Early Learning. This makes perfect sense if designed in concert with the learning environment as a whole, thereby using place making not just as an art but a tool for learning. This point was explored in the article ‘Learning Spaces: Biophilic design in Schools’ however, we believe this challenge needs to be taken further by integrating the theories put forward by Oliver! https://www.teachermagazine.com.au//learning-spaces-biophi #educationdesign #architecturetrends #learningspaces

15.01.2022 A workplace should reflect the vision and culture of an organisation. In alignment with our vision, our work is Intentional, Research Driven Design. 11.01.2022 As self-confessed learning nerds, we believe in Lived Values in education. Learning should be relevant and authentic. This is also true in architecture. We have a core pillar of Sustainability and Regeneration within all of our work, however, to add a genuine sense of care we have joined Architects Declare AU and we have committed Leaf Architecture to become Carbon Neutral. Initially, this is by offsetting our carbon footprint, and through the coming months and years, we wil...l be reducing our impact as a company. 10.01.2022 Leaf Architecture designed four homebases and additional student amenities of the Ashbury Public School. The goal was to create a space that compliments the landscape, whilst connecting their behaviours to sustainability. We achieved this goal by providing a strong connection to the outdoors (visually and physically) while also providing them with solar panels to assist with offsetting the use of air conditioning. On a nice mild day, the students can decide if they want to open the windows and enjoy a breath of fresh air or use the AC and consume electricity. #architectureprojects #ashburypublicschool #educationdesign

06.01.2022 Human-centred architecture focusses on creating optimal environments for people to perform at their peak. It considers spatial aspects, mood or energy levels as well as the innate social need to collaborate with peers. But as we enter 2021, COVID-19 is forcing us to adapt how we can come together. At Leaf Architecture, we are exploring the concepts that link learners in a multitude of ways, while accommodating for social distancing and unique learning styles. This includes:... -Empowering our learners to align key tasks with the times they are most alert. - Linking schools within the system to provide a depth of learning choices. This includes tackling complex subjects from new angles by bringing our learning community together. - Enabling home learning, particularly at the business end of school. - Recognising that learning environments need to provide choice, just like in the workplace. #LeafArchitecture #educationarchitect #learningspaces

04.01.2022 Rooftop solar projects at schools could reduce harmful air pollution, help the environment and enhance student learning while cutting electricity costs, a new study finds - Stanford's School of Earth, Energy & Environmental Sciences. In reflection, there is a strong continuality with our focus on sustainability and regeneration. However, as with all initiatives in our studio we turn them into a learning opportunity. As with all learning opportunities, we need to communicate t...he data to enable intentional and informed decision making by our learners. Such as the inclusion of panels to demonstrate the energy consumption do we really need the air conditioning on when its a nice day? Or the inclusion of CO2 monitors to demonstrate that the air quality has dropped and a different strategy needs to be employed.
