25.01.2022 Kids with dyslexia struggle to match sounds of spoken language with their alphabetic forms. Phonological awareness is an umbrella term - its the ability to manipulate sounds, such as the ability to rhyme. Phonemic awareness is the ability to recognise and manipulate phonemes in words. ... 21.01.2022 BD confusion is common in young learners and dyslexic children. The best tip we have for helping with B/D confusion is teaching the child that when they say the word b their mouth is making a straight line. When they say d their mouth is open like a circle at the start of the letter d. Swipe for our tips ... . . . . . . #dyslexia #dyslexic #literacy #reading #readingisfundamental

20.01.2022 What is hyperlexia? A lesser known learning difficulty in reading comprehension. This diagnosis, also known as precocious reading often, but not always, co-exists with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children with hyperlexia generally show an early and strong interest in letters, symbols and patterns at an age much earlier than is typically seen in children. Children with hyperlexia have a significantly higher word-decoding ability than their ability ...to comprehend. Children with hyperlexia also present with an intense fascination for written material at a very early age. . . . . . . . . . . . #hyperlexia #dyslexia #neurodiversity #neurodiverse See more

20.01.2022 The importance of early intervention cannot be overstated Dyslexia does not just show up in year 7. It may be diagnosed then but there are many indicators along the way which can indicate that a child is at risk for literacy and numeracy difficulties that appear in the earlier years. The early years lay the foundation for all future development. The sooner a child receives appropriate intervention for a difficulty, the more we can protect that child's self esteem and... ensure they don't experience a cycle of self-doubt, eroding self confidence and disadvantage. Here are some earlier indicators that suggest a child might be at risk for difficulties in the foundation years. . . . . . . . . . . . . #dyslexia #saydyslexia #earlyintervention See more

18.01.2022 I love Reading Doctor. Letter Sounds 1 and Letter Sounds 2 are my go to for a quick game at the end of a lesson. In no way will a reading app teach your child to read. Just like using Duolingo won't create fluency in a language... there will be many gaps and this app is no substitute for explicit, systematic synthetic phonics. HOWEVER I do believe that the right app can supplement and complement the intervention a teacher is providing! This one is called Reading Doctor... and I'm a fan. Not sponsored (I wish haha) just a happy user :) . . . . . . . . . . #readingapp #app #apps #appsandoid #dyslexia #saydyslexia #reading #readingspecialist #scienceofreading #decoding #phonemicawareness #phonologicalawareness #geelong #geelongsmallbusiness #geelongbusiness #geelongkids #geelongwomen #literacy #iteachreading #readingisfundamental #multisensoryinstruction #readinginstruction #learningdisabilities #learningdisability #learningdifficulty #learningdifficulties #neurodiverse #childpsychology #learningdifference See more

08.01.2022 Kids ask me why spelling and English in general is so damn hard! Why is English so tricky? Etymology and the study of the origin of words helps to explain why English is so hard. 06.01.2022 I meet so many kids who have been taught and rely on memorisation as a strategy for reading words. The problem is, by grade 1 or 2, the number of words to a child is expected to read increases dramatically and even for kids with excellent memory capacity, the task becomes too challenging. That's why learning to read via systematic synthetic phonics and learning decoding strategies is actually the key to successful reading - because it is then that a child can read a word ...they have never encountered before - by applying the code and rules of English . . . . . . . . . . . #dyslexia #dyslexia #literacy #reading #readingisfundamental #iteachreading See more

05.01.2022 When asked, most people have heard of dyslexia and associate it with an inability to spell and read. In fact, dyslexia has a range of common challenges and strengths. The strengths of dyslexia are often ignored entirely and left... unrecognised. For instance, did you know that one in three American entrepreneurs have dyslexia? Entrepreneurs like Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Steve Jobs and Charles Schwab were all dyslexic. We need to help children to overcome their challenges and nurture their dyslexic strengths! . . . . . . .#structuredliteracy #dyslexiaadvocate #dyslexiapower #dyslexiaawarenessmonth #dyslexiaeducation #dyslexicstrengths See more

04.01.2022 Orthographic mapping Orthographic mapping involves forming letter-sound connections in memory bonding spelling, how to pronounce a word and word meaning together. Why does orthographic mapping matter?... Mapping is important because when readers can read words from memory, rather than by decoding, analogy or prediction, reading fluently and easily is greatly facilitated. Once a reader is able to decode, they are able to ‘self-teach’ the order and identity of the letters and map them in their minds. Readers then self teach - as they have generalised the rules and continue to apply them to new words. Typically developing readers can map a word with 1-4 exposures to the word. For dyslexic learners - they may need twenty or more exposures to a word before it maps into their brains. I've written a blog post on orthographic mapping (link in bio) for the literacy nerds among us :) . . . . . . . . . . #dyslexia #dyslexic #literacy #reading #readingisfundamental #iteachreading See more

01.01.2022 These skills are crucial for a child to become an effective reader + speller! Speed and accuracy in these skills needs to be achieved for these 3 skills to become automatic.
