25.01.2022 Could this be a new maths game in class? Multi-step calculation = one die representing goals and the other behinds. Love it! #ADFL #mathsgames

24.01.2022 Building on the previous division video - here is one where the dividend has a zero. A simple change to the problem but if a student has learnt a process without understanding it will trip them up. https://youtu.be/lSZes8EF67A Dont forget to subscribe so you dont miss future videos. Enjoy! Marg

24.01.2022 What do you think the top 3 maths topics googled during isolation have been ? (presumably to help with teaching at home) The BBC provided some rule based instructions to help with the topics. As an alternative, I am posting videos this week to show how to teach these concepts using manipulatives so that students build understanding. Here is the first... #mathematics #statistic #manipulativesnotrules https://youtu.be/tWa7lZxzg9s... Enjoy! See more

24.01.2022 Are prime numbers under recognised when teaching maths? They are so much more than something to recall at trivia nights. This week our free videos for teachers focus on prime numbers, factor trees, highest common factors, lowest common multiples, simplifying fractions, square roots and surds - all using prime numbers. Enjoy! Marg https://youtu.be/7WZjFMj0f_E #mathteaching #primenumbers #teacherlearning

24.01.2022 What happens when there is a zero in the number you are multiplying? Teaching understanding not rules when multiplying. https://youtu.be/8RK9Nf-sHbU #maths #homeschooling #multiplication

23.01.2022 Our 3rd video on prime numbers is ready for viewing. This video focuses on using products of primes to find the Highest Common Factor, Lowest Common Multiple and to simplify fractions. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/Vv99Z3hUdo4 #mathematicsteaching #primes #factors

23.01.2022 Adding fractions! This time we use collections to help students find the equivalent fractions. No talk of lowest common multiples or denominators. Instead we model equivalence to find the common whole. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/1Y1ruuRXvJs #fractionaddition #maths #fractioncollections.

21.01.2022 Using a numberline to convert between 12 and 24 hour time. Download template at LearningYou.com.au. Let me know what you think. https://youtu.be/de5Zt_5YpCw #Yr5maths #maths #teaching

21.01.2022 This week its all been about prime numbers and maximising their power when teaching. Here is the last video - using products of primes to find if a number is square, find the square root and simplify surds. https://youtu.be/R-OAs9JN7LA Or if you are looking to teach square numbers using manipulatives check out our video on Square numbers. https://youtu.be/inDaUz6ohjE Next week - Fractions!... Enjoy! Marg See more

20.01.2022 If you struggle to explain division to your student or learnt long division not short division then this video is for you. The process of division hasnt changed, but the "setting out" may look different to the way you did it at school. This video shows the process of division using place value cards and the two methods of long and short division. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/MNoTM340mGs

19.01.2022 What is a factor? How can you help a student understand factors if they dont remember their times tables? Here is a video that explains factors using manipulatives. Enjoy! #Year5maths #factors #mathsmanipulatives #makemathsreal https://youtu.be/sxliLbReAdk

19.01.2022 Here is a Counting video for the kids - Kindergarten, Prep and Year 1. Count along with the video using Ten Frames to visualise the number along with the digit and word. https://youtu.be/RpTTgIhe-Fg

19.01.2022 Maths representing lifestyle? My mum’s 1960s canisters. Mine would be (in descending order of volume) coffee, rice, flour (gf) tea, sugar. You?

19.01.2022 Like putting zucchini in their bolognese sauce...they wont realise how good it is for them as they play this maths game. Most importantly the visual representation of the fact on the grid builds understanding as well as recall, with a little problem solving on the side. https://youtu.be/kwAiqbq9Dlk

18.01.2022 Have some fun this week making a maths chatterbox and enter our competition to win Eddie Woos Magical Maths book. Download the template at https://learningyou.com.au/download-resources/ Students can post photos of their chatterboxes in comments below (Like so you can find us again). Watch how to make the chatterbox at https://youtu.be/Ouzi8Ei6jv0 Enjoy!... Thanks Jeff Beitz for your amazing design skills!! #mathsisfun #chatterbox #eddiewoo See more

18.01.2022 A great numeracy game for students to play. Download scorecard template at https://learningyou.com.au/resources-for-parents/ or have students design their own coming up with the rules after watching these videos. #DAFL #numeracy #multistepproblems

17.01.2022 I have found some of my best teaching resources and ideas in second hand shops. To justify my overflowing cupboards of "junk" I am going to start sharing these with you on Second Hand Thursdays :-) Today its the Dingbats Junior game. I loved using these with students . Some of my Yr 10 high achievers in Maths found these challenging. They challenge the way you think, build resilience and persistence (because I made them wait for the answers) and promoted a Be Ingenious mentality to problem solving. Answers available at LearningYou.com.au....but not until the 28th May:-)

17.01.2022 Most of you know I’m a fan of Hamish & Andy. What’s not to love? Here is another reason. I suspect you may have a student or two who will find Hamish’s honesty helpful.

12.01.2022 All numbers can be represented as a product of primes and this is what makes prime numbers the multiplicative building blocks of maths. Use a factor tree to represent a number as a product of primes which will open the door to finding factors, HCF, LCM, simplifying fractions, finding square roots and simplifying surds. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/BRm5c2uSw9w #teacherlearning #primes #maths

12.01.2022 Theres nothing like fractions to get you warmed up on a cold Sunday afternoon. Here is the first of our Fraction videos that we are featuring this week - Using Fraction Models. Enjoy! Marg https://youtu.be/vLy69u4zgQ4 #maths #fractions #equivalence

04.01.2022 How do you prevent students adding denominators when adding fractions? You stop referring to denominators. This video explores the language we use, along with area models and number lines to build conceptual understanding of adding fractions with the same denominator....and it starts before Year 5. https://youtu.be/IjmvYNrpVEA Enjoy!
